The sanding is looking really good. What grit are you using.

MEKP is usually the culprit when resin does not Kick properly. When I receive a NEW order I usually mix a small batch to test the MEKP to ensure it KICKS properly. You never know how long it's been "On the Shelf". Something to think about. It might be NEW to you but that does NOT Mean it's NEW!!!!

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Thanks fellas..glad to get any support I can...tough doing all this sanding...

Decker..I'm using 60 grit an my DA random orbital..just to get close...and only on large areas..don't want any 'dips'...but when using the block I use 80...but that is the lowest grit I have, I might go smaller if I could find some... I then use 120 and 220....though I think the 220 is over kill for now...I mean I will need to scuff it before prime, right?

WoG...thanks for the tip...I had a small bottle and a large bottle...and noticed one was darker than the other...

I think I mentioned this before...but this boat looks to have sat in water above some big rocks...on a windy day...or a heavy boat wake/wave area...the edges of these strakes are just beat up real bad..I'll get them all fixed eventually though... maybe I'll get some heavy grinding/glassing in this weekend?

Come on weekend!

The sanding looks great. I would think if you are going to go with paint the 220 is fine. If your going with gel coat then the 80 grit would be enough. That is what YD told me in my thread.
I really think all that maters is you like how it looks.

Troop I didn't realize there so many in's and out's to glassing filler work. I knew there was allot of faring and sanding involved but man this process is putting u through the ringer! looking good though a lil each day.

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

oh boy...what an evening...
Sent the Mrs to the autopaint supply house..wanted some 36 grit paper for the airfile..got 10 sheets @ $1.25 ea....got it home..it was the self adhesive type...np...as long as it is long enough....it wasn't...first piece over my carpet base...lasted about 10 minutes..so...took off the carpet...cleaned the shoe..next one lasted 2 mins...ok getting miffed..decide to make a hand board...

Just applied with the stick side...lasted about as long as I did...

This was with the airfile...

My quick made hand board...

Left side with airfile...right side by hand...

Then I decided to use one of the wasted pieces on my hand block..had 2 small places left to do on the strakes....did the others while waiting on MRS to get back...worked good..and quick....only one problem with tonights work...

Some where along the line...while using the 36 grit..I made a gazillion fragments of glass..just long enough to enter my skin..and still be long enough to snag on me..my clothes..towels..you name it... this is by far the worst I have had it..If I was as small as a gecko..I could climb walls! Looked at my fingers under a loop...they are fillled look like a porcupine...not sure if it was from wiping my hand across the work or from cleaning the paper with my hand and water...most likely the latter....going to go nuts with this stuff!!

Tomorrow is Friday folks!

That doesn't sound like you or the Admiral will be having a very good Thurs pm into Fri am. Dag nab it, that sux, sorry but I got zero good tips for clearing that up. Too bad the grandkids are there, you've got spidey grip

It's a long shot, but got any TB3 left? Might put some on some tin foil & gently place your hands in it to coat your palms. Without aggravating the fibers, let it dry good into a film/mask on your hands and slowly pull the glue off.... Might try 1 hand 1st....

Or try everyone's favorite:
Duct tape :)

Ask the wife if she's got some liquid fabric softener and rub some of that on. It seems to help some.

Troop I wonder if soapy water will work while using the homemade hand board to keep the particles at bay.

just thinking here, will tape help to grab some of the glass off your skin? Probably not since one of you would have already said that but.... I know I would try it if I was in your spot!

I was using soapy water already...

I have used tape before with some success....the best I have found is the aluminum duct seal tape.....that stuff is super sticky..but will remove top layer of skin if not careful....

Sheesh, I hope it clears up...that not only sounds like a pain...I bet it don't feel too good either...

Another thing to try, is to soak your hands in Palmolive dish soap, then rinse and repeat...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Trooper, Sorry to hear you or having so much trouble with the inline sander. Using the 36 gritt with the manual long board, you or taking longer strokes and cutting the glass in longer pieces. You may want to use a higher gritt of paper that is not so aggresive.
My inline sander takes about a 1 1/2 inch stroke. It produces a fine powder. I also wear leather gloves while sanding.

I know what you mean about the paper not lasting very long. It will start out cutting great and then slow way down. I can do about 8 to 10 square feet and need to change. That is going from rough to a fine finnish. I bought a box of 50 sheets and it cost about $40.00.

It's just alot of hard work doing this part of the restore. At least you don't have to do the whole boat that way.
Hope your hands feel better.

Have a good sanding weekend.
