Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

I can tell you from my own experience, you are absolutely right...sometimes I fell like I wasted a day, a weekend, or even an entire week and didn't get a darn thing accomplished on the boat...

But you know what, you did other stuff...whatever it was, your time was occupied and you accomplished something...whether it was mowing the grass, spending time with the family, burning a pile of wood, or just kicking back and enjoying a good movie or sportscast...

The boats in our lives are just that, in our lives, a part of our lives, NOT! our lives...even though we have been doing this for so long with that single-minded goal of getting it done...in the end, we still need to live our simple ordinary lives doing the simple ordinary things...

Thank God that we have the health to complain about all the things we can't get done.

Many folks, don't have that luxury...

In the end my friend, it is the memories, friendships, our faith, and close family relations that make this life what it truly is...

SPECIAL!

BTW, great looking hairy PB and Happy Humpday!:D:D:D:D:D:D

silly question, but you did add MEK?, right...even if it was like only .5%...it will still kick, just might take a few hours...also what are your temps right now?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

You could also mix some straight resin & MEKP, maybe even at 2%, and hit the PB w/ it quick. If it's a slow cure problem, not a no MEKP problem...

PS-also remember that at O-dark-thirty, you don't have the Great Glowing Orb in the sky to heat things up...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

My mix was 150ml of resin...put in alot of cabosil to get it nice and thick..then a little glass bubbles so it would be sandable...then a tablespoon of chopped fibers....mixed in almost 2.5 cc of mekp....mixed it well...put it down...got some on my glove and it was hot (as in kicking good)...86 here now...I think it will go, just being slow...if not...not a big deal to do it again...

Nah, sounds A-OK...should be fine in the morning...heck, prolly start kicking off just about the time you are ready for bed...

If you have an opinion as to how much easier the PB is to sand with some M-B added, as opposed to none...let me know...

Put a halogen light on it and see if that helps.
I know the feeling about not working on the boat. Didn't do nearly enough on mine either.
Sometime just need a break.
Only thing keeping me going on sanding is finding the last sheet of sandpaper that I will use. I have been looking for it for 2 months now and still can't seem to find it.
Keep up the good work Trooper.

Will do!..I know my first batch was more MB than cabosil...it sanded like a dream...but was concerned it was not strong enough....so that is why I made a change in the mix...

GT1M. Big differance in sanding the MB than sanding Cabosil. Like Trooper said it is not as strong as the cabosil mix and is much softer and easier to sand. The Cabosil mix is just like sanding the resin and glass. It is very hard and very strong.

Did you add the MEKP before or after the Cabosil and the MB?? How old is the MEKP? Have you mixed other batches without issues?

I added the mekp after mixing the other ingredients...I know that is against what is suggested by most here, but it is the side of the debate I have come to be on...I just got the mekp in the last few weeks..this is the first batch I have mixed with it though...

Edit: I wanted to explain how I came to the conclusion/decision to mix mekp after the other ingredients...recall early on when it was Hades hot..like 420 degrees? I was mixing and cooking resin faster than I could pour it? That is when I started doing it after...I figured (could be wrong) that I was taking 10-15 minutes to mix the ingredients...to make my PB..then another 1-2 to mix in the catalyst...left me with like negative 6 mintues to apply...the math didn't work out...so..moved some time from one side of the equation to the other to make it work..might not be correct, but seems to have worked in my case. I have taken some of the waste ply/pb from joints on the stringers...beat it with a hammer..couldn't break it..the pointy part from up from is still in the back of my truck...wanted to see how the weather treats it...more on that later...

Well...it kicked...was soft this morning when I got up...but by the time I got off work it was ready to sand...

This is just roughed in, but was not tooo bad sanding..kinda tough...but used GT1M's secret water ingredient and things went good...thanks GT!

Nice sharp edge here...of course it will most go away when I put the radius on...but atleast this time around there is something to cut a radius into...

I just dipped the tip of my finger into the dish liquid...mixed into 2qts of water....and when the paper was really starting to get a good bite it looked like this...just dipped in water, ran my hand over it and all the residue went bye-bye...no loading whatsoever...

This shot is a little blurry...new camera does not handle closeups as good as the last one..who was that dummy that tried to clean the other camera?

Did someone say Humpday is over?

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Nice...glad to see positive progress and the fact the previous evening's PB turned out good...

I have had some weird things happen with resin...but if there is catalyst in it, and enough time goes by. it usually does OK...

I too, am of the mix everything together first, then add the MEK...in the kinds of heat we have to work in, it only makes sense...and I have yet to have a batch NOT kick off properly...I cannot attest to the scientific validity of the inherent molecular strength, but in all my uses of resin in this manner, I have yet to have a failure, plus I sincerely believe that the way we are rebuilding our boats is much better than the factory ever did originally...in general...that is not to say that there are some manufacturers that can build boats as good as we can, maybe even better, although way more expensively...but in the end they have to justify their costs versus the almighty profit margin...I only have to justify whether or not I think it is good enough and safe enough for my use...

Yay! humpday is past...Happy day before Friday...

Re: '78 Ebko Lebaron - Therapy

Here's the last bit of work for tonight...too humid to work...skeeters are bad too..and the wifey thinks I'm gonna catch Nile virus or something...

Not looking too shabby..even if I do say so myself...does have a low spot..I'll mix a little of the soft stuff for places like this for final sanding...
