Looked like the mounts for the power steering, They must have been screwed into the transom and rusted away to almost nothing. Then the po did that jack leg steel patch with a bunch of steel rivets and that just made it worse.

Are you going to do a plate inside and outside ? You could do a 5 Inch by 5 inch aluminum plate in and out and after the plate is welded on ask the welder to make you a zinc bracket and weld it to the repair plate (NO HOLES) of the back and add a zinc. That would be a perfect spot for it and also it would make the repair just look like you added a nice Zinc bracket off the transom when shes all painted nice. Just a thought. Go to pacific skiffs and black lab marine and see the bracket im talking about! Just an idea.

OK another update here.

I didn't get started till around 2:30. After spending some time on my knees sanding I decided it was time to rig the trailer and get this operation up in the air. So I installed a sheet of osb across the fenders and spent a couple hours loading it up.

Back to the sanding. Here's a shot of the cleaned up transom. Now We can get the holes welded up.

Got one side scuffed up and ready for primer. This would have been a lot easier had I not dripped paint stripper all over the sides.

So it looks like we'll get the remainder of the sanding accomplished tomorrow.

Did you use the stripper around all of those rivets in the back?

Looking good NB... that's one deep hull - plenty of freeboard. :D

Looking good! How were you planning on doing the weld? Plate over. Plate inside? Both? Or pure soder weld with a piece of wood behind melting weld arcross then sanding plush so it looks like new?

Most likely plate over. There's just a couple of small holes. The big one under the waterline is about 4" x 6".

Basically I'm just trying to get paint on while we still have some warm weather.

TII, that's why we switched to this hull. It's much better (IMO) than the mariner hull for the intended use.

Yea I think you are making a good decision by plating over, If you dont want to do 2 plates insde and out you can do 1 plate inside and on the outside get some filler and sand down nice and smooth and paint and she will look like new outside.

Or if you go with 1 plate on the outside you can just use it to mount your transducer or of you plan to do a zinc etc etc.

But me personally I would double plate it under the water line and also if your putting the I/O back in and you have to re-atatch that power steering bracket etc at that location she will be meaty and soilid from all that pulling , twisting and turning!

So at that point its really reinforced so in the future 30 years from now who ever owns her it will be as strong as the day you fixed her:)

I hate seeing them like that. But because of guys like you. You breath new life into them and makem better then new again! ;)

Day One-Still tired from all that strippin, sandin, and loadin that beast on the trailer

Day Two- Poured rain all day and the hull was too wet to sand!

Day Three- Had to do a roof survey for one of my clients just happened to be right down the street from the folks who ordered my nine bazzillion cans of ZC:D

I just got back. Tomorrow I'll finish sanding the last side and do a couple small marine tex repairs and she's a goin green:D

I may even shoot a primer coat on Sunday:p

Since I don't have any boat pics, here's a couple showing my other vice!

Yah, sorry Clay. I couldn't decide if I wanted to compliment you on your mammoth trophy deer or rip on ya a little. You can see where my priorities lie, huh. Photo police will be here shortly too.

Holy smokes man those are some monster deer!!:eek::D Iowa? Nebraska? I know they didn't come from my neck of the woods! I did see a nice doe with a pair of fawns walk by my deck a few minutes ago, but never anything big like those dudes!

I am pretty sure my bow is way jealous!!! About this time of year I am chewing up targets. Ah well, the Islander is getting attention.

OK, the mule deer was a 55 yard shot after a 3 mile stalk all the way up to the top of that coolie in the background in Kaycee Wyoming.

The middle drop tine deer was a 24 yard shot from a treestand about 100 yards from where I'm setting at the computor right now.

The bottom picture was a 6 yard shot from a treestand about 10 miles up the Potomac River from Washington, DC in Fairfax, County, VA. What we like to call suburban bowhunting.

Can you folks tell I'm bored here and really need to get back to sanding?
