NB, the 63 Starchief I had before had that paint/sealer you are talking about. The only thing I found to remove it is the sander like youre using. That is some tough s@%#. I didn't know what it was so I wasn't sure if paint would stick to it, so I removed it. I feel for ya brother. Sorry about the silicone mess. You have to be sure thats 100% clean or paint won't stick there either ( I'm sure you know this). Don't know why people use that stuff, it won't stay stuck to metal. Keep on stroking sir.

Yeah Jason you just do the notched holes on the two end pieces abd 6 solid holes on the center one for the ends of the rods,

FNH, I wish I knew what that stuff is, I might consider putting some on the boat.

Hey, exactly what brand on stripper was that you got from walleyworld?

I did mine opposite. Holes in the end pieces and notched in the center. I wouldn't have enough room on the center piece to cut all the holes. I have mine stacked 4-9-5 though.

One thing about having all the rod handles sitting in the center holder, the reels can (will?) lean over and sit on another rods handle unless they are spaced really far apart. With the reels in the outside holders, the reels will hang free. Well, at least conventional/bait caster reels can (will?), spinning reels are pretty high and will lay over, touching the rod underneath. It might not be a big deal with the rods sitting on each other, but it's a PITA moving another rod to remove the one you want. I guess it depends on how you space everything and with that 22'er you have more room to play with them I. And,,, I crammed 9 hod holders in where you are just doing 6. Maybe I'm just rambling for nothing :D

When I put the horizontal rod holders in my project I went with the starboard rod holders like I've seen in several other boats. But, I've found that the rod tips bounce around and let the rod migrate fore/aft. I'm going to try some stronger bungee cord to see if that solves the problem. If it doesn't I'll be replacing the starboard slotted board with a slitted pool noodle, like had in my old boat. That rod holder arrangement was

holes/handles................foam/tips...................holes/handles

I liked it better than having the rod tips sitting on starboard, rattling/bouncing around. You don't have to monkey around with bungee cords either.

OK, so I got fired up this afternoon and decided enough with sucking the dust and went to the local ace hardware and got me a gallon of this goop. did a test and made sure it worked and it did pretty good. However, on the areas with the over paint/coating, it only wanted to attack the top layer and not the bottom.

Islander63.jpg

So i doug out a long handled deck brush, dumped the stuff in a big painter's bucket. Then I slathered it on real good and went and rigged up my 2500 psi power washer. Made a heck of a mess, but who cares. This is what we ended up with using the hybrid operation (stripper/powerwasher).

Islander64.jpg

The cool thing about this is it strips everything from around the rivets also. I think I'm just gonna go ahead and do the whole boat.

This operation took about 1 1/2 hours. Not Bad! I'll let it dry until tomorrow and hit it again and we should be good:cool:

Well based on what Eric and the guys over on my ZC thread are saying maybe we'll just stop stripping at the bottom and leave the other stuff in place.

NB Zip Strip is some tough s--t it was developed and manufactured in my home town for more yrs than I can count (Alliance, Ohio) I'm not sure it's still here anymore though but I have never used anything else to strip anything the longer you leave it sit the better. I would like to say that I do admire your work ethic once you start something you don't seem to let up until it's completed or to your liking. I have followed all your threads and projects. kepp on keepin on!

Well I'm in between projects so I'm tryin to keep busy. Plus hunting season is just around the corner so I'm tryin to get some paint on it.

I talked to my welder guy today and as soon as I can get it on a trailer, he's gonna take care of the holes in the transom. So I'll probably paint the bottom and sides, and throw it on the trailer for him and then paint the stern.

That speed reading course really paid off for me...I just re-read your thread,
Here's the condensed version...{quotes{albeit partial} from you ;)}
Could easily scare away a noob :D

got up this morning
I had a brain cramp
I climbed up on the roof
we?re gonna have to fabricate
I think it's gonna work just fine
I've got a good size power washer and also a blaster that I'll use
I'll just rough it up a little
I hooked up a rope and a wire come along and went at it
It's a two man operation
Hooked up the ole JD and a chain and gave it a yank
i doug out a long handled deck brush
It's all gone now via the razor knife and scraper
the orbital sander is faster

I was just out there poking around
plottin & schemin
Oh well, just a little more work with the wire wheel
I just couldn't leave that hull looking like that
I broke out the orbital sander, the mouse sander, wire wheel and the cordless and went at it
I went all around the edge with a big honkin screw driver and the ball peen hammer
And it IS a PIA to remove and reinstall

I broke out the ole grinder and began removing the cabin top
hit the hull with the leaf blower one more time
the screwdriver and hammer method
That puppy's goin back on
I filled her up and threw in the rubber duck
the boom went kaput

I got the handy dandy JD
right in front of my face the whole time
I can flip this boat without any help
I hit the inside of the bilge
remove the 5 thousand thru transom bolts and screws
about 1/2 of them require climbing up the ladder
I'm gonna go hatchet crazy trying

anyhow I managed

{and once again I{HSF} prove I have no life :redface:}

NB, sorry I'm late. We're having computer probs (d@#$ viruses) I used Kleen-Strip Premium 3 Stripper, about 1 1/2 qts. I did about a 3 x 3 area at a time. Brush it on and wait about 5 mins. But the trick is this..take a razor blade in a holder and place it 90 degrees to the boat surface and pull it toward you. Kinda like shaving. Better than scraping. Plus a wire brush and you'll be surprised.

Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

It's all good, FNH. I just fired off to Ace hardware and the stripper I purchased worked out pretty good. With the double paint scenario, it took considerably more.

So I'm still tryin to bust this thing out so I hit it early again today. Went to town and bought the second gallon of stripper. Brought it back and threw a good slathering on the botton and hit it with the power washer. Then my son called and asked if I wanted to get some lunch his treat:eek: Man, I'm not turnin down any free meals so off to the shower and let the boat dry.

After a quick lunch I broke out the orbital sander and finished her off! This is what we're looking for. the sides are pretty smooth except where I accidentally dripped stripper on it goin for the bottom, and remember, the bottom was real rough. So we wanted to strip the bottom to get her good and smooth. Less drag = more speed:D. I'm still planning on just roughing up the sides and painting over the old stuff if I can.

Islander66.jpg

Then I slathered some stripper on the stern and scraped the top paint coat off of it. Another application of stripper and the stock paint came off pretty good. One swipe with the orbital sander and the stern should be good also.

Islander65.jpg

While I was busy on the paint my brother came over and fired up the welder and added a couple tabs to the trailer I've been rebuilding for this boat. It's the one that I purchased with the sleekcraft last year. Now I can mcguyver some stuff on the trailer and set the boat on it to wheel it around the yard for the rest of the sanding and painting. The plan is to blast and paint the trailer so overspray and such won't matter. It's a rust bucket right now anyways. I'll try and get some pics going of the trailer in the next couple of days.

WE TIRED NOW!!!!
