OK, 98 degrees here and you all know we get that really great humidity in this area. So...I jumped up this morning before breakfast and hit the hull with the leaf blower one more time.

Mixed up a full gallon of gluvit and slathered it on. I took some pics but you can't really see anything so you'll just have to take my word for it.

I also made a trip to the overly expensive metal shop to talk to them about my gunwales. It looks like they can make me new tops that have the radius that gets riveted under the outer rub rail, then break (bend) the metal down and back under deleting the need for the inner rubrail. This along with three sets of rod holder frames made from extruded aluminum will beef up the gunwails. The rod holder frames basically turn into nothing at the floor and are thru bolted in the side of the boat. Then we'll have them powder coated and we won't have to worry about paint on the top side.

This is the general idea.

This is what the rod holder/gunwale support looks like. We get three of these over 16 feet which gets us to the angle change up near the casting deck.

Man, am I a genius or what:p

Yeah, I'm with you on the joking around! ;)

The gunwale plan looks cool, hope the fab shop doesn't charge like the wounded bulls we get over here for fab work. :(

I really like your rod holder/gunwale support! I was kinda sorta thinking about fabbing something up like that for my rig too. Did those come on this Islander or are they from a different project??

You are burning man, keep it up!

OK, so I?m still pluggin away here by myself so I figured I can flip this boat without any help. Especially since I got the handy dandy JD. I hooked up a rope and a wire come along and went at it.

That was a bold maneuver to tackle that all alone. I thought I was gonna see pictures like Jas' Islander dancing in his driveway.

Did the semi-load of walnut shells show up in your driveway yet?

PR, gonna do this one with the orbital sander. Actually, the original paint is in ok shape. it's the caulk and the bottom paint over that's gotta go! I'll be sanding tomorrow!

Aren't you worried about sanding down the rivet heads? That would be my concern about sanding it.

Yeah E I just don't sand the rivet heads. I use the orbital on the flat spots and the mouse to get around the rivets. Plus, you'd have to pretty much leave the orbital on the rivet for about 5 minutes to eat the head off.

You know, that orbital doesn't really just throw the paint off. It just releives you of doing the ole back and forth all day. It would probably eat up thee or four disks to eat thru a head.

And I was just out there poking around. Frikkin moron did the entire keel edge in marine tex:eek:not caulk!

Good luck with that. I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a stick.

I'm gonna try the ole screwdriver and a hammer approach:eek: But I'll prob end up sanding it off. There's a fairly pronounced lip to that keel and he just featherd it in so I should be able to get most of it off.

Here's a couple shots of the bottom.

If you are planning to go down to bare metal, you might consider paint remover and a wire wheel. Might take some of the work off that big job. Aircraft remover is really good stuff and it wont damage anything. As much as I love sanding...not...I am a big believer in removers.
