Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

JAS, before I paint I need to remove the rub rail or it won't look right. Plus the rails need polishing!! And I do plan on talking to the metal fab guys about whether they can get me pieces that long and at least cut new side pieces with the turn down and return in it. We'll see?

Polishing gotcha! Yah, I considered that big time myself. I had decided that I would sand and prep the entire boat, then polish the alum, then tape all the polished stuff off (which isn't much), then paint the hull. Well that is the plan anyway. If I crash and burn, you guys will know.

You've got your rig down to about nuttin man, a good solid scrub and she is ready for the rebuild stage. Sweet! Nice job keeping the bow rail intact too:D

A N.B I love the way you cut the bow. Very nice. I like the strait cuts and how you did that. Are you going to be puting in a casting deck upfront with a aluminum strait support under it at the widest point port to star ? Darn that wood! Taking off the bump rub rails is a must to get a nice clean paint job. Taping will do if your not a nut like me and N.B but for a excellent near perfect finish its a must E....... Looks great N.B

JAS, I'm just not that great at taping, so off it comes. And it IS a PIA to remove and reinstall.

SNS, Yes on the casting deck and aluminum. The rear leading edge will be at about the second side to side stringer. That way I can have the belly tank fill nozzle within the edge of the platform. The rest will be storage under a hatch.

And while I think the straight edge cutout looks great, it's just the lazy way for me to deal with the sheet meatal work:cool:

Dog gone NB, I read you don't like tape but I can see you didn't put tape on the lower plate of the jig saw. You scratched your gunwale!
Its been a while since I read your post but, wasn't it SWMBO that did the polishing of the LL? Now I can see while you are moving along and I'm jealous:mad: You have help, no fair;) Well its that and I'm lazy by nature:p

Aw no! She helped with the LL and she thought I was crazy then. Now she loves the boat and all the good time we've been having in it. But she IS NOT going to help me with the second one. She thinks I'm totally insane taking on another project like this.

And all that paint has to come off the gunwales anyway.

I power washed the intire boat inside and out this morning. No pics it looks just like it did before so why bother. So I think tomorrow, I'm gonna plug the holes in the stern and do the water test.

Wish me luck!

Yah, I'm with ya Clay...

I stink on the spray gun big time! If I was asprayin I might have taken them off too.

I have tried a few projects and I can't get it, not even close! Too much paint, too little paint, too much air, not enough air, paint all over the place, runs, drips, and on. I really want to blame it on the HVLP gun but I know darn well it's the operator! So, a roller and brush it will be for my tub. I probably won't even tape off most of the stuff.

Hope your leak test goes well today!

Me and spray paint don't get along either Jas. I can't even spray a friggin' windshield frame without having issues.

Let me be the first to say BLASPHEMY!!!!!!!

OK, now that is out of the way, where the hell was I when all this occured?
NB, you are the Picasso of Starcrafts, I'll support your thread as always 100%

This reminds me of the pic you posted in my thread of that guy tooling around the modified center console SC!

Chauncey,
I haven't seen it listed in a couple of months. It was on CL in PA I beleive.

So just so folks don't think I here loafin, I hit the inside of the bilge with some aluminum cleaning acid called Zep-Alume today. It comes in a gallon jug and you dilute it 50 to 1 with water, spray it on, let it set for a few and hose it off. The danged stuff bubbles up and really does a pretty good job of taking the junk off. My bilge is however, still stained pretty bad but it's now clean enough for the gluvit.

But before that we need to watertest to see if we have any loose rivets. So I filled her up and threw in the rubber duck to see what gives!

Islander45.jpg

Let it set for a long time and only came up with 4 leaking rivets and they really just seep. So we'll re-buck them tomorrow and throw in the gluvit.

This is a big releif after the rivet fiasco we had with the mariner. I assumed we'd have problems with this one since the po caulked the edges and drain holes of all the chines and the keel and painted over it. Looks like he used some sort of silicone and it's failing badly. Oh well, just a little more work with the wire wheel:(

While you folks are looking, if anyone knows of a source for aluminum rub rail type stuff I'm looking for an inner rail like the 60's era boats used that turns up and over the top with a vinyl insert.

Hi Guys:

A friend of mine owns a Lund boats distributorship and I saw some spare parts in his warehouse the other day. he had some cast aluminum corners which seemed to me a match for Starcraft. He also had some proprietary Lund rub rail parts which sound like what you need so my advice is try contacting Lund and see if they have anything. Good luck.

NB, looks like your rubber duck has a weight and balance problem... trim up duck! :D

Glad to hear she's pretty water tight, that must be a relief.

Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

OK you folks know I walk back there and just set and look at things plottin & schemin about 20 or so times a day. And I set these little goals for myself. You know, like, I'm gonna get all the wood out by this time and I'm gonna be ready for gluvit by Tuesday morning, etc. So I was all done and decided to walk out back and just look at things and bam! The OCD took over and I just couldn't leave that hull looking like that thinking I'm doing gluvit tomorrow.

Next thing you know, things looked like this.......

Islander49.jpg

I broke out the orbital sander, the mouse sander, wire wheel and the cordless and went at it.

Now we got this and I'm feelin much better......

Islander50.jpg

And all this was in between packing stuff up for the shipper. I'm cleaning out all my 110 mercruiser stuff on ebay.

Then I hosed it all down, cleaned all the limbers again and we are ready for tomorrow's gluvit!!!

Couch Time!

But seriously, I want to make sure the gluvit bites and that bilge was a mess. I couldn't stand the thought of building all that stuff up over that crud.
