Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

I would think that if I'm getting 31 mph in the LL with that 4 banger and the wrong prop, I should do a LOT better with the Big Six and the stripped out hull. But who knows, we'll wait till SNS has his doudle mocha latte at 3 am and see what the expert rebuilder says;);)

Plus I'ma wondering what the Coast Guard folks would say when the find me running the double 250 outboards on a hull with a plate that states MHP of 165:eek:

KW, did you get my top secret email?

Hi Clay:

You have an email message. I took off for a couple of days to Whistler, BC for a little R&R. It poured with rain. Now I'm back in the Lower Mainland.

OK, now that is out of the way, where the hell was I when all this occured?
NB, you are the Picasso of Starcrafts, I'll support your thread as always 100%

This reminds me of the pic you posted in my thread of that guy tooling around the modified center console SC!

Yeah that's the guy in PA where I got the idea. I think maybe that's an 18 footer and he left the bow skin on it.

he's had it up for sale for about a year now.

Ummm Ok! No love on these forums at all. Well NB I drive a 67 foot tug boat and get home late some nights so sorry! some barges are biger then others. And thats my evening job! I also have a business i run during the day! Also I never said I was a master rebuilder! I Just think im smart for not rebuilding these things with wood which is the same stuff most people are ripping out and doing over etc.. Its a no brainer!

Also that is not acurate fuel consumption! That old six banger is not siping fuel. Shes sucking it and puking it out the exaust! And sure if you build this boat with no built in fuel cells and light wood rtc sure maybe she will hit 30 mph tops! But with a t top fuel all rigged up etc.. She is not a striped down boat. She will be heavier and with reason! If theres one thing that I know its offshore and I/Os strait inboards and outboards and big diesels! And on the water for a 22 footer twins is the way to go if your going far out there. Also have you ever been stoped by the coast guard before? They don't read the horse power rating etc. Also that the recomended hp rating and thats for a I/O configuration. The wight of your heavy six and I/O you can deff go with twins.

And P.S if the recomended HP rating is lets say 140hp And you put a 200hp on it. Its not ileagal in any way whatsoever! Vessels over 28 ft dont have recomened HP ratings! Because of there size and wieght. So if I had a 28 cape dorey with a 275 chrysler and swaped it out for a 400 cat diesel are you telling me the coast guard is going to do what?

Nothing ! So that theroy is out the window!

Its just a recomendation! Not a law!

But whatever way you go no matter what im sure it will be a nice Top ride!

I am looking for a 26 islander I/O to convert to a serious center console offshore canyon runner fishing machine with bracketed twin Outboards. I think I found one. I also seen that the new 2008 and up 22 and 26 islanders come with bracketed outboards with the I/O design stern. So im sure i can just order a bracket from starcraft and see if they sell a bracket for twins etc!!!!!;)

Wow NB, just one blink and you miss a complete teardown! Nicely done so far, she'll make a mean sea-faring machine with that big six humming! :D

Whats wrong NB? Are you mad that someone has already built a 22 CC with the same hull your building? Don't worry, Your the man NB, Im sure she will come out like a gem! Or you can just be the first to put a bracketed outboard on your 22 islander hull conversion! Maybe that will cheer you up! :D

You have a PM.

Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

Here are some very good reasons why you should do a bracket!

1. Less wieght to horse power racio.

2. When adding a bracket you can strenthing the transome so its bullet proof with 6 or 8 strait transome saver type brackets.

3. better fuel consumption for running offshore.

4. speed..... Now if you get caught out there with some heavy seas and you need to get home in a hurry if lets say the top speed on the boat with twins 100 hp mercs lets say You should do about 55 to 60 mph In ruff seas you should be able to do about 25 or 30 if you add some extra wieght and fuel upfront so she dosent pound!

5. Fuel consumption.

6. With twin ob you always have another motor to get you home in a hurry when your offshore. Its much better then a i/o or a single outboard with a kicker. On my sea nymph I have a 8hp kicker that I choose because of wieght. But if I where offshore in heavy seas my 7 mph ride home would be very scary especailly if the inlet where ruff in a oncoming seas i might be in trouble.

And just think of this with twin 100hp 2 strokes you would prob be able to plane on 1 motor and do about 30 mph on just one motor. Better then limping in like I would have to do with me sea nymph!

When I rebuild the sea nymph I have been debating to go with twin 70 hp outboards for stability and this exact reason...

If you want to do this boat right and want it to be a real offshore center console outboards is the way to go. Even if you did 1 200 or 250 hp od and a 25 hp kicker.....

But if you look at lets say a 1989 chris craft stinger the outboard brackets on this vessel is the way to go for this tiny to do it right for offshore fun!

Either way you do it im sure it will be done right! But outboards is the way to go. At 60 mph you can be 100 miles offshore in under 2 hours pulling in some 200 pound tuna fish and running home fast with the catch! Now thats offshore fishing! :)

With the I/O you will be doing 25 mph max with offshore fuel setup in that boat and thats just to slow and you will be sucking up 2 much fuel running wide open at 25 mph as oppsed to running half throttle at 30 mph with twins! Or twind 4 strokes even better! Or a huge single 4 stroke! Just giving you some ideas!

I had this idea 2 years ago and I bought a new home so I was unable to do it! Your doing everything so far that I would have done and thoughts I had had etc. But just really think about the bracket and the twin OB's If I ever get to do one like your doing! Thats what I would do! NB are you going to with a wood floor or are you going to try the star board floor? You should give it a shot especially on a offshore cc setup! We all know you can do a really nice restore! But if your building a serious offshore tiny you may want to go with star board for the flooring. Do it 1nc. Do it right! Rebuild this boat this time and make her better

Huh??? My eyes are bleeding from this steaming pile

I kind of hit a snag with needing someone to help me get the transom and the rubrail inserts off. It's a two man operation (thru bolts) and I don't want to bug anyone till after the holiday weekend. So, she just sits and I'm bugging the crap out of everyone here instead:D

E, you ever count the number of thru bolts on a rub rail on a 22 foot boat??
and about 1/2 of them require climbing up the ladder and into the boat for each bolt.

Think I'll just wait. Unless of course you're not busy.........:p

Hey buddy, tell me what you are up to by taking all the rails off there?? Are you going all new alum deck?

I wasn't about to take mine off with all those bolts! Surely the transom rail needs to come off but you can handle that on your own man!

Cheers!

Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

JAS, before I paint I need to remove the rub rail or it won't look right. Plus the rails need polishing!! And I do plan on talking to the metal fab guys about whether they can get me pieces that long and at least cut new side pieces with the turn down and return in it. We'll see?

OK, got up this morning and jumped on it again. First thing to do was run a line and trim up the gunwales to final cut. I?m bound by the narrowest area that used to be the front corner of the cabin which measures 5? from the inside edge of the outer rub rail. I decided to cut straight angles to the bow in order to allow for the channel we?re gonna have to fabricate that goes vertical on the inside face of the gunwale. That way we can use straight pieces of sheetmetal and we?re not trying to break any radius stuff. Next I removed all the remaining hardware, lights, rod holders etc. and the two side rub rails and the arrowhead end caps. Good thing I saved the ones off of Old Blue cause these were shot. I climbed up on the roof to get you folks these shots so you can get an idea of how she?s gonna lay out. I?m really starting to get excited!!!!

Next to do was remove the 5 thousand thru transom bolts and screws. Then I removed a few of the outer rub rail thru bolts on each side at the stern and the entire transom cap after I removed the remainder of the vertical gunwale extension in the back. Hooked up the ole JD and a chain and gave it a yank. The transom wood didn?t really want to budge, so I went all around the edge with a big honkin screw driver and the ball peen hammer and once it loosened the entire edge it popped out like butter.

Man that transom was rotted all to crap. Some of it looked like paper mache and you can see all the staining from water leaking. The two transom tie down bolts were rusted away to nothing. I?ll feel a lot better knowing there?s new wood in there.

Next step is in & out power washing and the leak test!
