Looks great!

Hmmmmm that 6 would certainly boost the Limo's top end ;)

Ya think:D No way I'm gonna go hatchet crazy trying to get that beast in the LL. All I want to do is cruise around the lake in that one for a while.

Dude, your foam removal was so stinking easy you didn't even bother to mention it! Ha! Little easier than your last foam job, eh!

Great progress Clay!

Wow! What a transformation. It's funny about those visions. My girlfriend always tells me that she never thought the boat would turn out that way, I reply that I had a "vision". Sometimes I am the only one that sees it.

Good job!

BTW, check your link in your signature. Didn't seem to take.

Yeah thanks. I had a brain cramp the other night when I was working on all this stuff. Fixed now:cool:

Hi Clay:

I never get tired of seeing the "Big Six"! I know you'll be delighted with it. So easy and economical to work on and to run, lots of low end torque and power. In my opinion one of the best boat motors ever made and perfect for shade tree guys like us. Splash time...?

Hi Again Clay:

Forgive me, I'm sure you know this already but I think you have an automotive fuel pump on the "Big Six" and something doesn't look quite right with the carburetor. I'm sure you already have this covered but let me know what you think.

Well KW, where to start?

The fuel pump sprays gas everywhere when the motor's running:eek:
The carb has the manifold activated choke removed with a small piece of copper tubing crimped on one end shoved down into the manifold. Then they rigged a manual choke to the gunwale at the stern? I guess you have to spend some time running from the bow to the stern and back when starting the boat????
And for some reason they installed a big round Rain Bonnet? atop the carb. Go figure!

Ok now your stealing all my ideas..... LOL Cant wait to see the outcome... Did you ever think about closing up that hole and putting a bracket off the back with twin outboards or a larger single 2 stroke? Keep up the nice work. Cant wait to see this one. I understand what your saying about the mariner. Thats why I choose a small 19 sea nymph over the larger mariner because the hull on the sea nymph is deeper and wider. But this project your doing is great. I was thinking of doing a similar project just with bracketed off ob instead of those old I/O's..... Cant wait 2 see this 1 done....

OK another day of intense heat so I only got a little done.

After working in the office till about 4 I broke out the paint scraper, a wire wheel and went to work on that stupid coating of aluminum paint someone brushed in the area where all the sheets of aluminum come together on the keel in the bow. I don't understand why folks do that kind of crap when a material as good as gluvit has been around since like what, the 50's! So anyhow I managed to get the aluminum paint that mattered out. I like to give this area a good heavy coat of gluvit.

Then I used my drywall saw to clean out all the limbers. Next step was to scrub down the entire inside of the boat with Purple Power engine degreaser. Here's a shot of the finished product. Most of what's left is staining and I'll go over it with the power washer as soon as I can. Then it'll be watertest time and rivet bucking but I honestly don't think that's gonna be needed. We'll see....

I can always count on the Starcraft club to have something sweet going on while I'm on vacation:D

NB, I'm with ya on your reasons for choosing this hull over the semi-V Mariner, a deeper V with higher sides is what you want for the big water rig so you can run in some swells when needed.

You'd have tons more room if you swapped the inline 6 for outboards on a bracket(sorry I failed to resist the urge to type that:)).

Down the road you will be happier with this rig, and the cool part is you already have the perfect console and leaning post:cool:

HA, I've really been toying with the bracket idea, but I think I've become an I/O junkie:D

Put a T-top on that thing and it is going to make a great looking CC fishing boat! I really like the look of it. And with all that freeboard it should be very comfortable in heavy sea. I like it!

Here are some very good reasons why you should do a bracket!

1. Less wieght to horse power racio.

2. When adding a bracket you can strenthing the transome so its bullet proof with 6 or 8 strait transome saver type brackets.

3. better fuel consumption for running offshore.

4. speed..... Now if you get caught out there with some heavy seas and you need to get home in a hurry if lets say the top speed on the boat with twins 100 hp mercs lets say You should do about 55 to 60 mph In ruff seas you should be able to do about 25 or 30 if you add some extra wieght and fuel upfront so she dosent pound!

5. Fuel consumption.

6. With twin ob you always have another motor to get you home in a hurry when your offshore. Its much better then a i/o or a single outboard with a kicker. On my sea nymph I have a 8hp kicker that I choose because of wieght. But if I where offshore in heavy seas my 7 mph ride home would be very scary especailly if the inlet where ruff in a oncoming seas i might be in trouble.

And just think of this with twin 100hp 2 strokes you would prob be able to plane on 1 motor and do about 30 mph on just one motor. Better then limping in like I would have to do with me sea nymph!

When I rebuild the sea nymph I have been debating to go with twin 70 hp outboards for stability and this exact reason...

If you want to do this boat right and want it to be a real offshore center console outboards is the way to go. Even if you did 1 200 or 250 hp od and a 25 hp kicker.....

But if you look at lets say a 1989 chris craft stinger the outboard brackets on this vessel is the way to go for this tiny to do it right for offshore fun!

Either way you do it im sure it will be done right! But outboards is the way to go. At 60 mph you can be 100 miles offshore in under 2 hours pulling in some 200 pound tuna fish and running home fast with the catch! Now thats offshore fishing! :)

With the I/O you will be doing 25 mph max with offshore fuel setup in that boat and thats just to slow and you will be sucking up 2 much fuel running wide open at 25 mph as oppsed to running half throttle at 30 mph with twins! Or twind 4 strokes even better! Or a huge single 4 stroke! Just giving you some ideas!

I had this idea 2 years ago and I bought a new home so I was unable to do it! Your doing everything so far that I would have done and thoughts I had had etc. But just really think about the bracket and the twin OB's If I ever get to do one like your doing! Thats what I would do! NB are you going to with a wood floor or are you going to try the star board floor? You should give it a shot especially on a offshore cc setup! We all know you can do a really nice restore! But if your building a serious offshore tiny you may want to go with star board for the flooring. Do it 1nc. Do it right! Rebuild this boat this time and make her better

I agree 100 percent. Bimini tops are great but on a windy day offshore its like a sail and you loose fuel consumption as well. A nice t top will also give added wieght that is much needed!

Re: 75 Starcraft Islander 22 I/O to CC Conversion

Hi Guys:
I don't want to get into a shouting match between I/O and outboard but....
I have the big six in my 1976 Grew/Slickcraft SS215. My boat is much heavier than an aluminum Starcraft and I get 25mph at 3100rpm. WOT is 4200rpm so I still have a way to go. I also burn consistently 6 to 7 gph at 3500 rpm. My guess is that this lightened Starcraft will get a higher top end and better mileage than mine. Of course all this is strictly my opinion but it is borne out by the Mercruiser manual!
