Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Been a while since I updated my progress..not really much to brag about but here goes.

I got all that crap adhesive ground off. Tried using paint stripper and it kinda worked but seemed to be more work than it was worth. So I just took the angle grinder to it.

I also created templates for the bow and got the plywood cut for all the bow pieces.

Next I'm going to finish installing brackets for the trolling motor batteries in the bow and then create the base for them to go on. Funny thing, in 1988 I guess they never thought about having a 24 volt system so the battery compartment only held one battery. But by increasing the height of the platform I can fit two batteries, but they'll be very tight with bottom of the floor.

If the weather would warm up I can epoxy the hull and start epoxying the plywood. But until then I have a lot of tasks I can complete.

More pictures to come.

TyeeMegee,

The project looks good! I might have some cell phone pics of my rebuild, although mine wasn't as big as yours. My foam was in good shape so I just replaced the floor, carpet and some of the console wood. I did coat all of my floor plywood with epoxy resin on both sides before re-installing. In hindsight if I where to do it again i would use vinyl instead of carpet for the floor.

Keep posting!

Excellent progress...looking good...

I am glad to see the fortifying beverage in the background, makes all the hard work a little easier to tolerate...:D

A Leinenkugel's always makes every project better :)

I got the trolling motor battery base and brackets done, everything fits like a glove. Working on the rod locker prototype now. After that I've got to do the main deck. Will post pics of both shortly.

The vertical board at the front of the bow. This is what it will look like with the cup holder and switch. Need to create holes for the trolling motor plug and the onboard charger plug.

Rod holder in the making...What you see here is where the last third of the rod will go. I'm using golf club tubes mounted inside two plywood brackets. Second bracket is in progress. The butt of the rod will be held with a "C" type rod holder near back of the boat.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Made a little progress today. Wife took the kids down to grandma's so I got a full 5 hours of uninterrupted work on the boat. Amazing. Apparently when I have time to do things I screw them up more!

Here's a picture of the panel at the bow for all the connections.
Going from left to right, top to bottom: 1. Trolling Motor plug, 2. On-board charger plug, 3. hole for the switch panel, 4. Cup holder.
There is a 5 switch panel + AC adapter that will go in the square hole. The switches will be A) Motor Trim, B) Aerator, C) Bow Lights, D) Accessories. I haven't thought of a use for the 5th switch yet..any suggestions? Otherwise I'll leave it for future use (maybe an electric anchor).

Yanked the bilge and livewell pumps out. I'm replacing them with Johnson 750 gph livewell pump and a Johnson 1250 gph bilge. I might think about re-purposing the old livewell pump to be used as a wash down pump. In any case they're both good spares.

Here's some of the wood after it's second coat of epoxy. Sorry about the picture quality, it was on my phone and dark.
IMAG0269.jpg

My screw up of the day. 1. I made two side-boards and I only needed one. 2. I didn't make a template first, so I didn't consider the fact that the gunwale is at a different angle than the floor, causing a giant gap between the top of the console and the side. Back to the cardboard and did it right. I should still be able to find a use for that plywood..
IMAG0272.jpg

Here's the console - sans the steering control plate. I still need to cut the holes for it and I haven't bought the gauges yet. So that's pending. I'm going to cover the console with a crap-load of epoxy and paint it to give it that fiberglass look. Or so goes the idea. Speak up if That isn't going to work. For the steering face plate I was thinking of getting some carbon fiber vinyl and epoxying over that to give it a carbon fiber look. Thoughts?

I took that scrap side that I screwed up on the console and turned it into a recessed tackle locker. This will go on the front of the console and I plan to put a black plexiglass door on the front. It will be held in place by aluminium angle brackets. The recessed tackle lockers I've found online are about $100, this one should be around $4.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Took the day off yesterday to log some time against the boat. My dad and uncle (original owners of the boat) showed up to lend a hand.

Accomplishments:
1. Finished bow hatches - vinyl installed, hinges attached, and backing attached.
2. All deck plywood cut. Total of 5 pieces, two pieces for the front part of the deck (under the console), one for the rear starboard side, one for the rear port side, and one over the gas tank.
3. Installed bilge pump on the bilge bracket.
4. Added first coat of epoxy on all the deck boards.
5. Threw some more epoxy on the front of the console. So far the console has three coats on top, two on the front, and one on the steering plate.
6. After prototyping the jump seats, finalized the sizing of the back and seat for the jump seats.
7. Cut the vinyl for the port side of the bow. Still need to fit it and cut the necessary slots.
8. Installed the 'gadgets' in the front bow plate.
9. Removed all gunwale hardware. Just need to remove the pin-striping, give it a scrub down and it'll be ready for painting.
10. Removed unnecessary screw holes in the transom and filled with JB weld.

Next Steps:
1. Install vinyl in bow
2. Cut out 'motor box' for back casting deck.
3. Cut out second jump seat.
4. 2nd coat of epoxy on deck boards (top side).
5. Cut metal trim for bow hatches.
6. Cover battery board in vinyl.
7. Rivet dry storage bracket into place.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

excellent work! I am redoing the floor in a 96 tyee 1850, my foam came out pretty easy as well. no mice for me though. have a thread on here somewhere, but need to update it. i went the noodle route, used 74, and haven't gone past the consoles yet. thats gonna have to wait till winter. just cut my carpet today, and sent it in for an edging, as i'm going snap-in. mine is an I/O however. i too used epoxy resin on both sides of the floor, used almost a gallon for the rear. will need another when i do the bow. like the look of your consoles. i'm not sure what im gonna do with mine. i look foeward to watching how this turn out. who knows, i go to lake of the woods occasionally, ill keep my eye out.
good luck.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Thanks Bruno - maybe we can get enough Tyee rebuilds to compete with the number of Starcrafts on here :)

Threw on another coat of epoxy on the deck boards tonight. Got vinyl on the battery mount.

Here's a diagram of the jump seats / casting deck I'm working on. The only challenge is finding the right hinges.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

I was thinking more along the lines of the Alumacraft, Crestliner, or Princecraft jump seats. I don't want to use up all the room on the deck for the fold up platform that Lund or Lowe has.

Looking at the other platforms, it seems like a regular seat hinge works. I might have to get a pair and play around.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

So my search for the exact hinges that Alumacraft uses resulted in Alumacraft telling me they can't sell me hinges. Lund (looking at the Baron jump seats) told me the same thing. So I'm just gonna order some pinchless hinges from Cascade Depot that look like the right thing.
http://www.cascadedepot.com/servlet/the-865/Universal-Pinchless-Hinge/Detail
I have the storage box and all seats cut and epoxied but am reluctant to make the seats without having the hinges so I know exactly how they'll fit. So that'll wait until the hinges come in.

Onto the flooring...
All my deck boards have been coated in 2 coats of epoxy.
Then I coated them in 2 coats of Tuff Coat primer.
Then, 3 coats of Tuff Coat.

The Bow:

Here's the flooring in place:
101_2256.jpg

I'm going to wait until I install the vinyl on the sides of the boat before I screw the decking in, plus I still have to give the hull a scrubbing and apply the Coat-It to the rivets.

Nice to see something tangible coming out of all the prep work.

Because I like to see how awesome I am, here's a side-by-side comparison of what two months of work got me.
