Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

They can call it epoxy all they want but anything WATER BASED ain't gonna replace true epoxy resin.

OK, so I'll plan to coat both sides of the plywood with REAL epoxy, and they put their water based primer on top of the real epoxy. Not sure if it will make a lick of difference but I figure better follow their directions. Should I be concerned about any chemical reaction of the two epoxies?

1 Collapsible Drink Holder

rounded out my purchasing for the weekend.

Amount spent so far: Approx. $866.00

I haven't included odds and ends from Home Depot as most of them are multi-use and not specific to the boat restoration. Like new work gloves and the like. If I include that, we're looking more like $985.00

I made some more progress on the demo, albeit it is progressing a little slower than I had hoped.
Some accomplishments:
1. Removed the trolling motor mount (sounds easy but it was a pain) Props go out to my super awesome cousin.
2. Removed the steering wheel and dash (again, props to the Cuz).
3. Did some damage to the foam under the Port gunwale. Cousin attacked it pretty good. Need an angle grinder to get the rivets off the brackets so I can really get in there.
4. Removed the tin in one of the storage compartments and stripped the adhesive off of it using paint stripper. Worked awesome until my daughter got a little on her hands and feet. That was not so awesome.
5. Removed all the hoses and connections to the gas tank. Whoever put the tank in last was nice enough to strip all the screws so I can't get them out. Need some better drill bits to drill them out. My POS stripper screw remover kit is for the birds.
5. Removed the Romex wiring :D
6. Got the carpet and aluminum ledge out of the starboard gunwale so I can start ripping foam out. Surprise surprise, more mouse nests and turds

Pics to come...

Some work done over the weekend:
Me working hard on removing the aluminum in the storage area:

What I removed:

What it looks like with the Yoga Mat:

All the foam out from the hull. Gunwales have been a PITA. They're next:

Port gunwale foam removal in progress:

Shining up the bow. This was done using a wire brush. I'll be using paint stripper for the rest:

What it looks like under the splash well with the foam out. You can see that the plywood in the transom doesn't go all the way to the bottom of the hull. I can feel the plywood and it's as hard as a rock. I think it magically avoided the rot that the rest of the boat got!

The gas tank and all its connections. I got the hoses and wires removed. The screws are stripped so it'll take some more work to get that baby out. Following the advice from another thread, I think I'll fill it with BBs and drive around with it in the back of my truck for a week to get all the crap out.

Tyee, I think Lund did a very good job with their transoms. I have a 1984 that is still using the original one. Coming along nicely!

Not bad at all TM, some guys might take as long as a couple of months to get that far...keep up the great progress...you'll be in the water before you know it...

Thanks GT. Fishing opener is only 6 weeks away...although that might be a bit aggressive.

My dad wasn't too keen on my paint job idea. He wants it original, I want it black. Let me know what you think. In the end, I'm doing the work so I think I'll win.

Well, it's your boat. They both look fine to me. If you're feeling like a pirate, go with the black.

The black looks awesome but just a heads up, it shows dirt and stuff really well.

Yeah I think the black looks pretty sweet. I'm all about being a pirate :D

Hopefully this weekend I can get the rest of the foam out of the gunwales (total PITA) and then hit the bow some more with the wire wheel and work my way back. Then remove the gas tank, aerator, and bilge. Then give it a good scrubbing. My goal is to be able to coat the hull with Coat-IT by next weekend.

Lund tyee is a nice solid boat, the 1980 models where built without the plastic molded dash consoles. As long as the hull is sound you can rebuild the rest. I rebuilt a 4.9 Tyee before I discovered this site and I am looking for a 5.7 Tyee ( pre 1990 ).

Keep us posted

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

low,
I agree, it's a pretty sturdy hull. Only problem with the plywood consoles is they rot
I plan to fiberglass the new consoles so they'll last a little longer.

Progress....Worked on getting the foam out from the port gunwale (yes, this is taking FOREVER!). Apparently soaked foam creates some suction with the hull which makes it much harder to pull out than the dry stuff. So I have 99.9% of that crap out of the port gunwale. went through all 4 of my 18v batteries grinding the adhesive off of the boat. So I guess it's break time.

Just scored a trolling motor on CL. Minn Kota PowerDrive V2, 65#, 54", Co Pilot, wireless foot pedal and fob, universal sonar for $425. Going to pick it up tomorrow :D

Do you have any pictures of your rebuild? I'd love to see how it turned out.

The consoles lasted what??,.....30 years???

I don't know if I would spend the time glassing them,.........We will all probably be in the ground before the new consoles rot anyway,.........

Well the consoles were toast about 15 years ago. I like the look of a fiberglass console as well besides the longevity factor.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

I think I can declare the Tyee "FOAM FREE". Those gunwales were absolutely horrible to get the foam out. But I'm glad I did. The foam was soaked and smelled like mice.
Here's a pic of the starboard gunwale getting the foam hacked out of it.

Here's the starboard gunwale with all the foam out. VICTORY!
IMAG0157.jpg

Port gunwale with the foam out and me getting a little ambitious sizing up the noodles.
IMAG0158.jpg

Ground off the adhesive (that ALSO smell like mice) from the aluminum that was riveted to the gunwales.

Got the tank out. It only took 4 drill bits.

Next up, grind grind grind grind...adhesive be GONE!
