Everything is looking real good.

Fastening down the decking after the finish has been applied is a good choice.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Ez,
Those are close. I'm looking for something that's a little taller, I've seen them on another site. Reason being those hinges are designed to have the seat rest on the bottom seat and not lay flush. So if I used those the thickness of my seats will be compromised. With a taller hinge I can have a decent thickness to my seats and still have the hinges lay flat. The "pinchless" style is what I'll go with.

Jig,
I didn't think it was wise to put the flooring in and then paint it. If I ever had to pull the deck up the paint would come off at the seams. I've heard of guys doing it the other way (with carpet as well) which ends up being a mess if you ever need to get under the deck. I prefer to have my boat 'modular' in case any part needs to be replaced I can do so without a complete rebuild in the future.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Hi TyeeMcGee,

I have an 85' tyee 5-5 and I'll probably end up restoring mine next winter also and I'll be using your very informative thread for great ideas.

I have a quick question. I believe I have the same bilge pump as the yellow one pictured. This may be a silly question, but my bilge works, but my aerator doesn't. Is the two piece yellow thing pictured a combination bilge/livewell aerator?
Thanks,
Brad

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Brad,
The livewell and bilge are two seperate pumps. The livewell will have a pipe going out below the transom, the bilge will be on a bracket and have a hose going out the starboard side of the boat (I believe this to be true on most boats). Not sure I've seen a combination bilge / aerator. Not sure how that would work. If I were you I'd replace them both if your budget allows. For under $100 you can probably get bigger pumps than what you have currently and also have peace of mind knowing you don't have 30 year old pumps in your boat. They way I see it, as long as I got it all torn up, it isn't much more work.

Update on the flooring....
We had torrential rains the other night so I figured it would be a good time to test out the non-skid flooring. I climbed up in the bow and 'pounced' around a little. Very impressed with the grippiness (if that's even a word) of the Tuff Coat. By comparison the vinyl covered hatches seemed quite slippery.
As far as clean up goes, a bird decided to help me test the ease of cleaning. Most of it came off with the spray hose. I had to scrub a little to get it completely clean. But it cleans up nicely. 1000 times better than carpet.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Past two weekends have been spent camping and at a fishing tournament on Mille Lacs, so not much progress made. I ordered these hinges off of ebay - $30 a pair..not really excited about paying $60 for hinges but was the cheapest I could find of that style.

I got the storage box between the jump seats covered in vinyl. My wife will be upholstering the jump seats within the next two weeks (hopefully), then I can get the back casting deck all put together. So far the casting deck is coming together exactly as planned. Funny thing, I just found jump seats from a Crestliner on Craigslist for $90 after I got everything cut, epoxied, and covered in vinyl. Oh well, at least I can say I built these from scratch.

More pics to come...

I might have sent this message already, sorry if i did. I was wondering where exactly on ebay you ordered those from? I have now decided I want to try the same thing after seeing your post!!

Joey,
The seller was Cascade Depot. If you go to their website they have the same hinges for $31.95 but you also have to pay shipping. On ebay they were $30.00 and free shipping.

Only problem is they say the "paint is inadequate", which I'm perfectly fine with. I have a can of black spray paint.

By the way...I would refrain from using my design until the final product hits the shelf. I could end up with a giant FAIL on the whole shebang!

Thanks Tyee

Yea I'm sure a can of spray paint would work just fine. Don't worry, by the time you make it work I will still be trying to finish sanding down the entire boat! haha I'm still not even sure what I should really use to do that anyway.
I look forward to reading up on you finishing your set- up. I bet it will come out nice an there will be no epic fail!

Here's a diagram of what I "think" my lighting wiring will look like. I'm no electrician so throwing it out here for peer review.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Got the hinges today. A couple observations.
1) I don't think I cut my seat backs narrow enough to accommodate the space the hinges take up. Each hinge will need about 1/2" on each side of the seat back. This may require re-cutting and re-vinyling the seat backs.
2) The hinges don't lay completely flat. This isn't necessarily a problem, but it will require some fabrication on my part. I don't really need the bottom part of the hinge so I could chop it off.

Note to anyone else planning to do jump seats...get the hinges first so you know how to accommodate them in your measurements.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Made a little progress in the 90+ degree heat this weekend.

1. Finally got the hull epoxied with Coat-It. It doesn't look the prettiest but nobody will see it anyway. But it does look like it will definitely do the job of keeping things sealed.

2. Installed the pool noodles. My estimation of 90 noodles was a little off. I used more in the gunwale than I thought I needed so back to Dollar General I'll have to go so I can complete the front part of the deck.

3. Installed vinyl on the starboard gunwale. I used Loctite PL 400 Subfloor adhesive with a sweet attachment I picked up at Home Depot that applies the adhesive like a trowel. The starboard side took 1.5 tubes of adhesive but it sticks WAY better than that junk marine vinyl adhesive from Cabelas. I will be using the Loctite from now.

4. Installed the livewell aerator and bilge pumps.

Pics below..

Next up:
1. Install pedestal mounts.
2. Make starboard control mount board. Seal and cover in Vinyl.
3. Install gas tank.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Progress in the past day or so...cut top for the storage box, epoxied, covered in vinyl. Created brackets to mount the hinges to (you can barely see them mounted to the gunwale in the pic below) covered them in epoxy and vinyl.
The tops of the deck are too wide to bolt on as is so I'll have to cut them down a bit to account for the hinges. Thinking I might just cut out a corner to account for the width of the hinges. So far it's turning out pretty close to what I expected. As always, if I were to do it again I'd do several things differently, but that's the learning experience.
Sorry the pic sucks, taken in the dark with my cell phone.

I installed the gas tank and screwed down the gas tank cover panel and the starboard panel. Waiting to screw down the rest until I install the vinyl on the port-side gunwale and get some more noodles under the rest of the deck. Thinking I'll dab a bit off Tuff Coat on each screw to cover them up. They kinda make the floor a bit ugly with them showing.

Plan to have the cousin come over this weekend and really pound out some progress. Hopefully the casting deck will be DONE!

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

HUGE thanks to my cousin for coming over yesterday to help with the boat (and to my wife for keeping the kids entertained all day).

Some items of progress:

1) Installed vinyl in the bow
2) Installed the trolling motor (slip plate and bracket)
3) Installed vinyl in starboard gunwale
4) Installed vinyl in port gunwale
5) Created starboard gunwale panels for the controls to mount to
6) Installed bushings in the hatches so the pulls will operate smoothly
7) Installed brackets and hinges for rear jump seats
8) Sanded the console - ready to prime

Ha! Yeah it looks like they had the head of the trolling motor on the other side. I guess they didn't mind having it in the line of sight of the driver.
As far as the unveiling party, once I get to the point where we're close I'll post the time. Location is Lake Washington and beers at Westwood afterward.

Re: 1987 Lund Tyee 5.3 Rebuilt

Here's something interesting...a couple days after we put the vinyl in, I can see the liquid nails through the vinyl
So word to the wise, don't use Liquid Nails on a light colored vinyl!

Instead of re-doing the whole thing, I think I'm going to get some of that vinyl spray paint and just paint over it.

Good grief...

I prefer the Weldwood contact cement for applications like that, it's a little tricky to work with until you get hang of it but the results a worth the learning curve.
