Holey Clouds of Fiberglass Dust Bat MEN!!!

You two flat out kicked some grinding butt!

Great Progress.

At this rate, you will not only catch up to me, but leave me in the "DUST"...

It won't be long before I am looking to your thread, to see what my next steps are gonna be...;)

That channel is called a "Strake" or a "Chine"...not sure what the differences are, but somebody around here knows, I'm sure...

Hey thanks guys for the support! JBC, Bear, GT1M and S.P. it's pretty cool going through this all together.

Today we had a big day on the boat. First off I actually recorded my first video. I tried to go for the jasoutside kinda feel and I made an effort to make a non-edited take. The first take I was almost completely headless, so I did on more try. I think this one is as good as today is going to get lol.

We finished the grinding on the interior of the boat today! wooohooooo! It took a mammoth 4 hour session but it is done! This feels like such a huge milestone. Next we managed to get the boat flipped over and the cradle modified so we could work with it. We took one of the side support arms off so we can get to the entire outer hull. Next up is filling all the chips and war wounds on the outside. Then we'll paint it.

Here's a few pic's of our progress today.

Have a great week folks. Let me know if I should keep trying to do the video's or if I have a face for radio, lol

The speckled paint on the side looks pretty good are you gunna have to paint it?
Did just the 2 of you flip her over or did you get help?
Later S.P.

Great job w/ the grinding & the vid. Swing by a carpet place & get some remnants or scraps, don't want to scuff up the hull once your done w/ repairs & paint once you flip it back over to do the stringers & etc.

Looking good,

Have a great week...

hey SP. I promise to keep trying to do better at the videos this is a new medium for me ;) That speckled paint is the original gel coat on the boat. The sides are in good shape but the brown metal flake on the cap is highly questionable. I'm toying with repainting it to match Michigan State University colors as I bleed green and white. I will have to paint the white on the hull at the minimum so it's tempting to just do the whole thing. To flip her over it took all hands on deck. I had to recruit the 14 & 11 yr old boys to assist.

Thanks JBC! I had that same thought. I had avoided it earlier but now that we're doing the hull I think I highly agree we need to give her some padding.

No work on the boat for us for a few days. I'm back in class for work and the homework and studying is kicking my butt. (although my boys are loving seeing dad sweat out the school work a bit, lol) Hope to get back to the boat this weekend though.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Please post us an email address for the professor assigning all this homework that is slowing boat progress. You've gotten a good head of steam going, we need to keep the pressure on!:D:eek: We know a 'guy' who'll speak to the homework assigner, and see that you'll get the 'A'!

As long as there is no term paper holding up weekend progress, it'll be ok to be a more learn-ed iBoater, ed-u-ma-cation is good!

Thanks Wig.

JBC, 3 days in class and a hard ***** test and I was way behind at work. I am happy to report that I am now ITIL foundation level certified though :) (if you must know its an information technology process management certification) I spent Thursday & Friday catching my work up and I had some other commitments this weekend that unfortunately kept me from the boat. The admiral required my attendance, that is ;)

Anyway, we did manage to sneak out and work on some of the chips in the hull. We cleaned out a few scratches and chips and filled them in with some Bondo Fiberglass patch (it seems like a thin pb) I'm glad we did the small area first because we learned that we needed to be more careful about how much extra we built up. It took forever to sand smooth. Tonight finished sanding the test area and cleaned out the rest of the chips and scratches on the hull. Tomorrow night should be wash down time, wipe down with acetone and fill em all time. The goal is to be painting the first primer coat this weekend.

I know, no pic's no proof so here you go.

It was like a week ago but I have stayed at a Holiday Inn before, but the description didn't really help w/ defining ITIL. But that 's ok, esp if includes a little bump in the ole' pay envelope every friday:eek:. Glad the time away from the boat was spent studying & ya PASSED!:)

Always an acceptable 'excuse', however the abuse of the Admiral or Honey-do card will require written/photographic proof;)

I'm not at a Holiday Inn tonight either but, I think Bondo isn't preferred. But more importantly, it maybe overly sensitive to water intrusion below the water line. Please wait for conformation on that, but I'm fairly sure. 3M Marine filler or homemade PB (oops I think does the homemade, but you know, he stayed at a Holiday Inn for like the whole pre-term 9mo & pretty much every night since.....)

Don't be overly alarmed, esp if it's not going to be left in the water for long periods, and I don't "think" even a 4-5day weekend counts as a long time..

Nice work,I was thinking you could probally build a even better boat out of wood, with all your skills.I had a 1978 ranger bass boat and it was as far back as i would go as the models look very squarish before that year.

3M makes a fiberglass resin jelly similar to PB, as long as he used the marine version it should be fine, I used it for my chips and scratches...regular bondo filler, not so good but the resin jelly is ok, albeit alot more expensive than making your own PB

this is what I used

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

^^ Yep ^^

The regular Bondo, I think, has boat photo on the front and lists boats in it's description of good for: XYZ too. Go figure, advertising that falls flat under rigorous iBoater's stress testing procedures.

no worries mates. I used the marine version as Judge did. I only picked up 1 quart as that will be way more than enough to get me through the outer hull repairs. It was only $13 and it was local so I didn't think the cost was too bad.

Great!:) The last time it was mentioned, it was reg plain vanilla Bondo, not Marine. Just checking. Good deal local & close are both a good thing.

Ah, thanks, but I am in that group of new guys. I just have a few things between me & finishing the grinding, or I'd be doing that instead just getting by through watching you guys work. :D

Yep, I hear that the: clean, fill, sand & repeat & repeat & repeat & repeat &.... is almost as much fun as grinding was!

I'll know that too, soon enough I figure....

Good luck making some progress tonight too....

UHHHMMM, I really recommend using 3M's Premium Filler and not the bondo stuff. I know it says for marine use but... I still recommend this....

I'm kinda anal but.. If you're not gunna make your own outa resin and microballons and fibers then I really think this is the way to go. But like I always say, I AM a DUMB OLD OKIE!!!!
