Thanks for the suggestions WOG. Judge & WOG, we have hooded tyvek suits to wear when we get into the grinding process. I planned on talc powder, taping seams at gloves and cuffs and the hooded suits should keep the itch to a minimum. Glad you all are keep an eye out for us though.

WOG, do I need the straps if I put sides on the cradle? I already have the lumber and was planning on doing that in the morning. I'm using this project as a teaching process for my first mate so I want it the right way, lol.

Today was a busy day with my favorite team in the Outback Bowl. After a nerve racking first half I escaped into the garage to work off some nervous energy on the boat. I managed to get the starboard side of the extended cradle done today. And, my team won in triple overtime! Not a lot to show today but here's the progress for posterities sake.

Back to work tomorrow and I hope to get the other side of the cradle done with some cross bracing underneath.

You MUST put some carpet scraps, towels, rags Something!!! on those side supports. If you do that then GREAT no need for strapping the hull

When you are done with that cradle...send it over my way...It looks to have enough wood to build me a new carport! I think that would do it, but definitely need some carpet...even if you plan to paint/gel it, carpet would save you from having more scratches to fill in/sand out!

Hey Craig,

Looks like you made a ton of progress over the weekend!

Nice job on the side supports... I'm gonna try WOG's strap method....

Where did you get the PPE? Are the goggles part of the respirator?

Wood & Judge, I understand your concern about scratching the boat but the only thing touching the hull is sanded 2x6 with rounded edges and all pre drilled countersunk screws. I guess some carpet scraps would be softer but I don't think any less likely to cause damage at this point. Judge, if there's one thing I tend to do it's over build, haha. I'll reuse the wood somewhere when this project is done. Or maybe I'll have to start another boat and reuse the cradle?????

The respirators came as a kit with the cartridges from Amazon. They were like $29 for the kit. Goggles were separate from Amazon as well. I taped over the vents on them for grinding.

Ok just make sure its all snugged up so the hull can't flex.

Finished the cradle tonight. Now the hull is snug as a bug in a rug....

Now we can finish the demo!

On another note I was starting to think the stringers might be ok. No delamination, glass looked to be in good shape. Unfortunately, I drilled some exploratory holes and found wet wood in the middle. At least I should be able to use them for templates.

I think you could drop a tank in that cradle and it wouldn't budge! If you put that much into the cradle can't wait to see the workmanship you put into the rebuild.

Thanks Judge, I hope I don't disappoint.

Today we committed to running a local Snowflake 5k race. Ryan won his age group and was 8th over all and I took 2nd in my age group. I sure do enjoy our adventures together.

Of course we had to swing by Harbor Freight on the way home :) . (it was only 15 miles out of our way, haha) bought a new angle plunge saw thing and the hss steel blade. Came home rested for a bit then it was time to go play with our new toy.
We managed to get the front casting deck and the soaking wet foam under it removed today. Now I'm whooped and it's time to go out to dinner with the Admiral. Hopefully tomorrow we can get the transom and side floatation boxes out.

Hey Craig,
Its great to see another father son team working on a boat. My son and I spent the day grinding out the old strings on ours. We did get some strange looks from the neighbors not sure if it was what looked like snow flying on a 75 degree day of the 2 guys in goggles and respirators that did it though lol.

Hghvoltage, thanks - its been a fun project together so far. I bet you got some looks, haha we laugh at each other every time we put our hooded tyvek suits, respirators and goggles on, we're like the reject space crew, haha

Today we wrestled with the side flotation boxes and the transom. Man those side boxes came off hard! Glad we did though. Half the foam was soaked and worst of all we found the supports it was all tied to were mostly rotted and worst of all it looks like the factory was in a hurry the day they put them in. Just slapped on with a piece of fiberglass.

We got about a third of the transom out. I originally thought it was only the area we were working on but have since figured out it goes the entire width of the stern. More grinding and cutting to go to get that the rest of the way out.

Once that is out it's time to cut out the cross braces and start trying to carefully remove the stringers in a way we can use them for templates for the new ones.

Question, it looks like these go all the way from the back to the front and step up to the fishing deck height. Can I put a bulkhead at the start of the new fishing deck and then split the stringers at that point? That way the new fishing deck redesign has shorter stringers to deal with and the main deck area stringers are easier to cut.

So this transom has been bugging me the past 2 days. Today I decided it was showdown time! A bit more grinding, a bit more cutting and a lot more cussing and I finally got the rest out tonight. (and it only took another couple of hours)

75f33292.jpg

The transom was 1 inch thick at each end up to the side stringers, then it was 1 1/2 inch through the middle section. Can I just make the new transom 1 1/2 inch all the way across? I would think this would only help with energy transfer through the hull and stringers making it stiffer. Thoughts?

I don't see where it would be a problem, as long as your cap can fit over it, but also not a problem to refab it like it was, up to you which would be easier

Thanks Judge, I'm thinking the same width all the way across might be the easiest way if the added weight isn't an issue.

Tonight I spent a little more time cutting out the cross braces and cleaning up some of the edges of the old floor. I learned some interesting things tonight. First, they only glassed the top of the cross braces.

Second, the stringers look like they only glassed them in between the cross braces.

The last thing I learned is it's pretty cool taking a boat apart in reverse and figuring out the original build process.

Here's a couple more pics of the progress for posterity sake.

I have a three day weekend coming up and am hoping to get all the stringers out and a good chunk of the grinding done.

Next week I'm hoping to put in my first US Composites order. Wood, I'd be open to suggestions on how much to order. I was thinking 10 gal of resin as a starting point but have no clue on the rest.

Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

For an 18ft boat, doing stringers, deck and transom you should probably start with the following...

435 Resin 15gallons
5 qts of Cabosil
1lb of 1/4" chopped strand
1 qt microballons (to make your own fairing filler)
25 yards (1 Roll) of 1.5 oz CSM Chopped Strand Mat)
10 yds of 1708 Biaxial cloth
Fiberglass Roller

Everything else you'll need you can get locally.
Check the link in my signature for Recommendations on how to do it all/with drawings.

That's my suggestion for your Order.
