Re: 1982 Sylvan Bassboat project

Thats what I,ve been using and it works good but I had to get it from that marine store with the big W on the sign and BOYYYY they was awful proud of it!! Can you use poly resin with the microballons to make faring??

Doesn't that big W store price match? Even clearance & closeout prices?

There's a recipe here somewhere for fine faring, but I think it's mostly poly & just fine microballoons.... Filler has chopped fibers.... Those 2 mixes are together where ever they are here. Send me back all those missing solo socks from the dryer, their w the recipe....

Ok, to make your own fairing compound there's two ways to go Poly and Epoxy. Remember Poly should be used if you are going to gelcoat. Poly or Epoxy can be used if you are painting and epoxy is prolly the easiest to do since it does not set up as quickly but this also means you will have to wait longer before you can do the final sanding. The mix is basically the same. I mix the resin and the hardener first and then add the Micro ballons until it's creamy like ketchup then add a little Talc to make it a bit thicker just so it will not "Run" on a vertical surface. With Poly you only have about 15-20 mins till it sets so adjust the amount you mix to this time frame and how much you'll use. Epoxy more than doubles the time so you can "Fiddle" with it more and not lose your batch. Since I paint everything I use Epoxy when I make my own fairing compound.

Thanks guys, I do appreciate the advice. We're kinda pot committed to our current course for the scratches and chips on the hull. Nothing was too deep. We got a single coat on almost the rest of the scratches and chips tonight after a thorough wash and wipe down with acetone.

What's the best method for removing the Sylvan logo/stickers on the sides? We're going to use the Valspar primer from TSC. going with gloss white for most of it and repainting the brown metal flake to a dark green metal flake. Any tips on how to do the metal flake would be appreciated as well. I thought I'd head to Sherwin Williams in town and talk with them about some Oil based Enamel options and use the Valspar hardener from TSC.

Here's a quick pic of tonights progress.

did you mix enough of the hardener in with that filler? its green in the can but when mixed with the red hardener should come out a brown color....insufficient hardener makes it take forever to cure and it will gum your sand paper like crazy..I had one spot on my hull that was improperly mixed and it was a nightmare to sand!

Picture...left side mixed right and sanded easily, right side done 2 days earlier and was still there!

Judge, you're spot on with the observation. My son tried to sand tonight and it kept gumming up the sand paper. We'll try again tomorrow but it looks like we mixed the hardener a bit lean this time. I'll err on the side of caution next time.

On the good news side. Wood turned us onto a Morse sewing machine on Ebay, then I found one similar on Craig'slist and long story short, I'm going to look at it Saturday and Wood endorses it. If all goes well I'll be joining the sewing circle this weekend. It's a Morse like Wood's just a different model and thanks to his advice, I'll get it for $75! Wish me luck.

SP, sorry, for makin ya dream about those awful colors, lol. I just like the look of the metal flake on the bass boats and LOVE my spartans! So much so, I'm thinking of changing the Sylvan S into a Spartan block S for the logo's on the sides.

Wood rocks!!! he most certainly takes care of us. Like most children I'm sure we disappoint him with our decisions from time to time but his influence certainly makes our end results so much better!

Yeah that wood guy, he sure is helpful to have around. Same story, different machine, same results here:D!

Great, now on the weekends, we'll all be sitting around sewing, drinking cheap but tasty coffee & talking boats!:p

Craig: did you ever get any feed back about the metal flake paint?

I don't remember who, maybe ezmobee or andgott, but someone wasn't happy with the metal flake paint they laid down on their cap. Not knowing much about paint or flake paint, I can only guess that the flakes used in marine gelcoat are fairly large compared to the metal flake used in automotive paint. Esp that color shift paint which, as I understand it, is really just high tech very small 'metallic' flake. Being a large flake in a paint instead of thicker gelcoat, UV or just heat (??) caused premature fade/failure of the paint color suspending the flakes, the background paint behind the suspension, or the clear coat over it.

I didn't find the info when I went to look for it earlier, but I'll give it some thought & see if I can find it tomorrow. Right before I go pickup the Slant Singer WOG hunted down for me!:)

oh, and JBC, no, I didn't get any response on the metal flake question. been doing a little interweb research and I have a basic idea how to do it but planned on talking with a buddy who does auto-body for a living. I plan on painting and not gel coating the hull and cap. From what I read so far it sounds like the best method is to paint your solid color then on the last coat of that spray the flake in, then roll n roll on intersecting (45 degree) patterns while still tacky. Let it cure then clear coat over top. But that is just my research so far. Was hoping the pro's would chime in.

Yikes, at least it has the puke green case/cover... You can hide it under there until your putting thread to vinyl, then it'll be working on the boat, and it's all good!

Have a good weekend!

I know that's a pretty manly machine, lol. but hey, I'm secure in my masculinity...... at least I was? The admiral asked if that machine could sew new covers for the patio furniture cushions tonight... I think she's on board. I'm still not sure if that is a good thing. Next thing you know I'll be sewing boy scout banners....... hahaha just kidding Judge... Hey were's Judge? he's like missing for a couple of days.

Family night tonight, or as I like to think of it letting the poorly hardened filler cure. We watched Megamind! I think I found more humor than the kids in it. Tomorrow I hope to sand fully cured filler, wash, rinse and repeat.

what the heck happened to the forums today? There had to be 100 glassers and tinny's going nuts not being able to gab about what they wanted to accomplish this weekend... Happy Workend everyone!

1000's some wisely chose to let it go for today, I had to get it out of my system. JDA was on tonight, but not long. Most really did bail when it went down for service. Don't most service outages come after a system wide notice of pending outage?

Oh well.....

Just don't let the Admiral rent you out to her friends to sew drapes & couch covers:eek: I told my Mrs that the Mercury leaks a little 2cyl oil on everything it stitches:facepalm: Vinyl products only!:D

'Course, indentured servitude could have it's advantages. But in the real world, we really aren't interested in anything 'desperate housewives' do or don't do beyond their front door, whether it's opened or closed.

But it might be a way to fund the rebuild!

Good night, that's all I've got....................
