She is starting to look like a brand-new boat already...this is gonna be one sweet rig when you are done.:D

I agree on perfecting the paint technique on the bottom first. I painted my 12 footer first for practice.

I think I will spray the SS with HVLP. I have a buddy that showed me a few tricks to keep it smooth, and I might be able to convince him to help out too.:)

Looking great from here, keep up the good work(before you have to go back to work;)).

Jas, for what its worth, when I rolled & tipped my Starchief I didn't thin the rusto at all. It went on smooth and dried fairly quickly in 50 degree weather. Honestly there wasn't much "tipping" to be done. Looks good dude, I know your glad to see some color on her.:D

Hmmmm?

Quote
"OK, so yesterday I took a break from pretending to be a boat builder and pretended to be an HVAC guy. I hung a bunch of duct work from the wood burning furnace in the basement out to the garage. This morning it was about 20 outside and I had the garage at between 55 and 62. What is pretty cool is the forced air can maintain the temp in the garage and the radiant heat can still keep the house warm. Didn't cost me a dime either! I just pulled down some existing duct work that wasn't being used (basement).

So this morning I washed down the hull one more time with acetone.

It dried fast so I was able to put a top coat on this morning too (thinned at 30% with mineral spirits)."

Wood burring furnace ducting to the basement?????:D

New paint and heat to the garage?

Do you get up two hours before you go to sleep? Somehow you're squeezing more hours into the day :)

I managed to get my sons room ready for paint before laminate flooring. The celing fan in the bathroom just went so that will be on the replace list for tomorrow.

OMG it has color The boat has color what is happening?

Yah buddy, looooonnng time coming! Feels good to be going down this road man!

Wow Jas, there's no holding you back is there? I'm with you on the painting, I've never tried rolling and tipping, but from experience I know that getting the spray "just so" is the most difficult thing, however once you've "got it", you've got it, so to speak. Best of luck mate... :)

PS: Sorry about the Jon boat joke... bet the kids would love it though!

Thanks TII - hey man, I get what I deserve. Little Jon boat would be sweet! Course, it would look a little silly with Big Jon Capt. Pack Downriggers and an air horn mounted huh.

Thanks bro! Yah, I am trying to sneak out to the garage as much as I can this week. Forward motion man!

Rolling and tipping OUT! Spray, IN! More on that in a minute...

Yah, wood burning furnace in the basement, does a great job of heating the house - now the garage too!

OK, just for reference, here is what I am using for the paint work...

Etching Primer, Rustoleum Pro Metal Primer...

Rustoleum Pro, Acetone...
IMAG0148.jpg

So yesterday, not very impressed with my roll and tip job at all. I was out and about, ended up at Lowes and found myself standing in the air tool isle. Well, I grabbed this guy and headed for checkout...
IMAG0147.jpg

I left feeling super guilty as I hate spending cash and this sprayer wasn't even on sale!! Not like me at all, though Santa did leave me a little Christmas $$ in my stocking so I went for it.

The guilt didn't last long though! THIS THING IS AWESOME!!!! I AM WAY PUMPED!!

This morning I got the garage to about 65 degrees, thinned out the Rustoleum 1:1, filled the sprayer cup and gave it a few test passes. Made a couple of quick adjustments and went to work...

(camera was MIA, sorry for the poor cell photos)

Wow, what a difference! What a breeze! It looks great !!!(I know it's tough to tell in the poor/dark photos) It took me less time, it was less work, less paint, and in the end, I think it will cost less to spray this boat than roll/tip. It even made my poor roll/tip job look a lot better.

This sprayer is superior to the other I was using. I think it was money very well spent. One thing this one has is a gauge at the handle. My other didn't and with 50' of hose I'm not sure I was getting accurate pressure readings with the gauge clear back at the compressor.

I'm thinking maybe two more coats and the bottom will be done. I'm not going to wet sand as it's just the bottom, no biggie for me. There are a lot of old war wounds that I decided to leave anyway. I'll take the time and extra steps for the top side.

Cheers Guys!:D

Do you have a good water separator on your compressor? A guy at my hangar just messed up a paint job because he hooked the sprayer up to an air supply that had an oiler built in. Just make sure your air supply is clean and dry and you will be golden...

Great job!!!

Your primer/paint choices are exactly what I'd go with if I had it to do over again. Don't know if I'd spray though. Me and spray paint don't get along.

Good tip on the separator, I'll need to look into that eh. Thanks for checking in man!

Yah, right off the shelf from my big box store, price is right, if it peels, and when it chips - rattle can touch up!:D

EZ, I am telling you man, using that sprayer was easier than falling out of bed in the morning. I have struggled big time with terrible results on my other one. I had all but given up on spraying. If I can swing it I am certain you can buddy!

NOW you see what I was pumped about when I bought a HVLP sprayer!!!! And you thought I knew what I was doing when I painted mine...wrong. LOL Heck, I think it would paint the boat itself except it knows you actually ENJOY painting now.
Very nice work Jas. After sweating the motor fiasco (oil pan) and now dreading the paint job...it kinda seems like smooth sailing (pun intended).

Yah, I'd say that Merc oil pan was the scariest so far, although a pretty cheap/easy fix (thank goodness)! The hardest part to this point was wire wheeling the trailer. I still think the crux (most complex part anyway) is yet to come with the maintenance, and installation (plumbing, electrical) of the motor/outdrive. I hope I can pull it off buddy!

Man J after paint I would have to say you have it made. Having a blank canvas to do as you will just the planning can make it hard on yourself.

Great job on the paint! You've got me convinced on how I will paint when it comes time. I will be copying you :D, hope you don't mind. Looks great, keep it up!

Oh man, that would be great! Not holding my breath though buddy. I still have a very long way to go!

Thanks boatguy! This being my first (semi successful - er, mediocre) spray job I think I had a steep/quick learning curve. I am glad I started on the bottom hull so my mistakes aren't so obvious.

I'll post of a couple of shots of the final top coat when I get that wrapped up and I'll give you a heads up on my screw ups so you don't make the same mistakes I did, eh!

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, here are a few shots after self etching primer, prime (roll and tip), 1st coat (roll and tip, ugh) and 3 sprayed coats...

P1040592.jpg

P1040597.jpg

P1040594.jpg

Couple of simple things I learned (hard way as usual)...

There is a fine line between too much and not enough paint. Too much means runs, too little means poor coverage and rough texture. I was moving too fast and spraying too thin at first. Then I ended up spraying too much on, runs, akkk! Check it out, right at the bow too...
P1040589.jpg

P1040582.jpg

(I know the paint pros are rolling their eyes at my flaming armature abilities. I am cool with it.)

Another thing I learned is lighting matters!! Big time! My garage had terrible lighting and one of my two halogen lights burned out just as I started spraying the bow there. I couldn't see as well as I should and sure enough, I got those runs.

I also learned that my ability to roll and tip, forgettaboutit! While my hull is far from a work of art I think that with a little more practice I can do a much better job spraying than what I can do with roll/tip.

I know this here job is rough looking with the brush and roller struggle at the start and no fine sanding in between, but I am ok with it. Though, I'm not so sure I can let those runs go at the bow. I may need to sand that down just a little and do a light coat again. We'll see.

Hopefully I can redeem myself some when I paint the topsides, k guys!

Cheers

Looks great man. I always prefer to spray when I can. Never had the skill for a brush.

Is there a difference between the Rusto Pro and Rusto Topside?

It seems most people here use them interchangeably...
