Both designs would look killer on you boat. Those seats are the bomb by the way.

Hey Jas, looks like you are making some great progress. Those seats are great. I am am kind of partial to blue as well and think the bark blue would look awsome., and easier to keep clean?

I like that blue. Use the layout of the black boat though as opposed to the blue one. Bring the color down as far as it is on the black one.

Thanks pst, I'm pumped about those seats man!

Thanks dozer! Yah, that blue seems to be growing on me now.

Yah, I'd for sure bring the color down to where that black one is. I like that better.

Those seats look perfect for the Islander, nice score for sure. Seats sure are expensive, especially nice bolsters with the fold-up leaner things.:D

I'm leaning towards the darker color but the seats wouldn't match. I agree with EZ's observation on the paint style, the lower band of dark blue looks perfect. I also like how the side gunwale piece has the dark blue with the Islander badge too.

Nice to get opinions here but isn't this decision ultimately up to the wife/family:p:D

Yah man, I have seen some crazy prices on these type of seats:eek:

I feel like I got a heck of a deal!

Yah, I think I may do a little something like that. TBD, eh!

I am with ya there!

McKenna (6) likes pink or purple (though blue was her third choice). Ryan (4) and Ethan (2) love the giant sharks mouth! Jennifer (34) doesn't like black and has a tough time seeing anything other than the ghetto version that is currently in the garage. She and her sister were mocking me as I was cleaning the rig the other night. I suppose I can't blame them too much seeing as I pulled this boat out of the trash and am trying to make it look something like those rigs above there.

So that is what I have to work with:rolleyes:

I think I'll prolly go blue, it does seem to be growing on me now:D

Ok, another question. How does the finish look if you roll on the paint like you were saying Jas? Wondering if it is going to be all smooth and shinny or not. I have never painted anything like that before and was just wondering how it works is all. I do like the blue as well and agree with Ez on bring it down like the black boat. I WAS toying with painting mine red, but now I don't think so. After looking at some red ones it looks like it would be a PIA to take care of.

I thought coming up with an idea, driving yourself crazy over it, doing it, then tweaking it was the accepted process in boat restoration? Oh BTW, a year later your supposed to change it.:D

Thats why car guys call us crazy. We have to make our parts. Then we throw them in the lake!

Well my friend, I would have to direct your question to any of the guys in the iboats brohood who have gone this route before me. Any comments fellas?

From what I have seen and read...

Rustolium can be awesome or terrible.

High end stuff can be awesome or terrible.

Some guys have put real money and real time into their paint only to find it flaking off in the end (names withheld to protect those who are still steaming mad over the issue). Shoot, I can go cheap and have that happen!

I think rolled on Rustoleum will level out pretty well. Heck, I'm sure you've seen the web sites where people have painted cars with rolled Rusto.

http://www.rickwrench.com/index79master.htm?http://www.rickwrench.com/50dollarpaint.html

Thanks for that link EZ!

I think he said something very important in his blog so I copied it here...

"I've come to the conclusion there is no middle ground with auto painting. Either go as cheap as possible, accepting the limitations and flaws and enjoying the feeling of doing it for nearly nothing, or, go all out. Anything in between is going to be a disappointment, no matter what. There is no such thing as a satisfactory "mid-level" paintjob."

I really agree with his statement and there is no doubt that I am going the route in highlighted in red.

Rock on guys!:D

Awesome score on those seats man. The blue scheme where they are not too many shades off looks awesome too. Best to take your time now and be really happy later.

I love the VC performance epoxy on the bottom over top a 2 part epoxt primer. I should have sanded bit more and wet sanded the VC but it's reallly on there good and as tough as nails.

My new paint job topside already has some minor scratches that I can live with.

I enjoyed my old Lund car topper that I did with Rustoleum just as much and it did hold up decently as well but was prone to flake off in larger chucks when impacted. I don't remember zinc chromating 20 years ago :)

Ok Jas, just to prove I am a nice guy I will trade you seats..even trade 'cept you pay for shipping..both ways.
I like them seats you have Buddy. I can see you relaxing in them and asking Jennifer " comfy now??"
I like the blue paint scheme too, as EZ pointed out. I think I would have to put a blue accent on the side of the cabin though. Maybe a blue shark decal? LOL

Thanks dudes!

Yah I agree, an accent on the cabin right by the window there would be a nice finishing touch. I already have been scheming a decal for that spot too;)

Man all this paint prep stuff would have been way nicer outside during the summer months! I think I am about 3 months behind on this project, rats!

Half way to the weekend guys!

No bare polished tin anywhere Jas?

I was thinking about changing seats and found this link a while back for any of you (other than Jas obviously..nice snag!;)) that might be interested:
http://www.boatdepot.com/lp/toddclearance.aspx

I really do like the look of bare alum on the bigger rigs, makes them look real utilitarian ya know. This boat wants to be painted though:D

That is a good link there, I have yet to grab seat hardware so that may come in handy (once my budget recovers), thanks!

Hi Jason, for what it's worth, I prefer the blue-white over the black white. And I own a BLACK-white boat! Enjoy your paint journey and, by the way, what a great score you got on those seats - I'm jealous!

PS: Don't worry - the kids wouldn't be scared with the shark mouth nose art, I bet they'd think it'd be cool, but you'd just HAVE to fly the Jolly Roger if you went down that route.

"PREPARE TO BE BOARDED!" :D

Thanks TII!:D

Yah, I am way pumped about those seats!! Yup, I believe this here boat will be blue on white:D

Well, quick progress report: sand, clean, repeat has been the course. And lots of it! I have completed the stern deck, gunwales, and cabin deck/helm. I have yet to finish up the bow deck which shouldn't take me too long. After that I can then move on to the hull. I think I am gaining on er, maybe, barely.

Keep at it it will come. At least with aluminum you do not have to worry about it rusting after you sand.:D

Thanks bro! Yah, I was sorta feeling overwhelmed with how much sanding and cleaning that needed to be done but now I have kinda got into a groove. I think the hull will be a little easier (even though there is more of it) as the topside has so much stuff to work around and tight spots, ya know.

I still have it waaaayyyyyy easier than my fiberglass back yard boat building bros!!:D
