Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

It is only going to take 3 sheets of plywood for the entire deck? How are you configuring your seems?

Actually, I could have done it with only 2 sheets but I opted for 3. You can too man!

It'll be a while before I have my deck in there to take photos for ya, sorry. You can figure it out for sure. Basically, two seams running perpendicular to centerine.

Remember, I have that belly tank going in which also means that I am taking that step down out too.

Cheers!

Did you decide to go 1/2" or 3/4" for your deck? I think the Rusto route is a good choice for your paint. Keep it simple and you can keep it touched up and looked decent for many years.

The next time that you sand Jay, hook the shop vac to the sander. Take the bag off and stick the hose in there, this works great and it's A LOT LESS MESSY. If you don't want to ruin the filter, get a dry wall filter bag that goes inside the vac, they make life much easier when it comes to clean up. ;):D

Hey Papa-Smurf, erm, I mean Jas... you are not wrong... you really have some action happening there! Great stuff and do not breathe that blue dust!!! I think a black hull with white topsides would look pretty cool... :)

I decided to go with the 1/2" but everything is going to be glassed. I also have some plans to add aluminum angle sub deck to provide some more structure too.

Had I gone with the 3/4" I wouldn't have glassed. I went back and forth on that a bunch. I think either way would have worked fine. I saved money going with the 1/2" that I'll now spend on the glass. I saved a little weight on the deck at the cost of a little extra time into glassing. I think I'll be happy with the end result.

Yup, I am with ya on the paint. I am going the Rustolium route for a few reasons but the most obvious would be:

#1 This boat is on a budget (even though I am trying hard to give her some nice stuff). Rustolium is what, half the cost of anything else out there?

#2 When (not if) I get a big ol gouge in the hull touch up will be easy;)

#3 Simple. Gosh do I like simple and straight forward stuff.

Here ya go buddy, I just stole a couple of sheets of construction paper from the youngens.

Here is how my deck will go down...
P1040282.jpg

Now on your rig, see, you have a bigger cabin than I do and just a little less deck space. You could probably line up your deck the same way I did, the pieces would be just a little smaller. Or, you could lay it down like this...
P1040281.jpg

Those two aft pieces would be scrap from the other two full sheets, meaning, you'll only need two sheets for your deck. Eh!

Side by side comparison...

Knowhattamean?

I think I remember you saying that you are going with a belly tank too, what you decide may (or may not) effect your deck. I know that there was pretty much only one way that my 33 gallon was going to fit and work correctly without doing deck modifications.

Cheers!

Thanks man! I stink at pool these days - used to be pretty good when I played a lot but man have I lost it.

I would totally work with those guys, that would be some fun!

Good tip buddy! When I started I wasn't thinking there would be that much but yah, I'll need to go that route next time eh!

I like the way NB painted th Liquid Limo. He kind of hung it or suspended it in the air. Then he worked around and under it. Flipping your tub Jas, will be hard.

I think I'm going to try the hanging method. Too lazy to flip.

Yah, we'll see about the flip/tip/hang. I don't think I'd mind being underneath for the painting part. Really it's the prep part that will be a drag.

Hopefully today I can spend some quality time with her today;)

Well..you just blueby me again. No worries though, nothing to be blue about. I still don't know your paint scheme, or the highly classified name you have chosen:eek: Jas, have you got a game plan for your plumbing and/or wiring that may be under the deck? For some reason that is my hold-up..a huge brain f@rt kinda thing. Maybe I need to follow your advice and simplify things.

Brother...YOU are quality time. You never fail to keep us amazed, or at the least amused.;):D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Sheesh Dale, you are way too kind!

Yah, as for plumbing/electrical I really want to keep everything above deck if I can help it. Exceptions would be my livewell drain line and the fuel supply line. I can leave the livewell drain line above deck (through side hull) but it won't drain completely that way. I can have the fuel supply line above deck too (behind the side curtain) but that is a lot more expensive as I'd have to use a bunch more line. TBD on all that.

Paint scheme??

Yah, I thought I had a plan. Solid too! Now, hmmmmm.

I'll need to post up some photos for ya and ask you guys for some opinions (I am sure you guys have those) - hang tight on that.

Have a great Saturday guys!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I struggled with that question too... I ended up with a removable deck section in the rear port side (under splash-well) that the fuel filler hose goes underneath. I put a small removable hatch over the only place I have wiring under-deck as well... I can easily get to both if needed and can easily change/modify either when/if the need arises. I feel much better about how it's done than I would be if I would have to tear up deck to fix anything...
