Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah tomy, I want to be able to get my hands on whatever goes south - and I have no real interest in tearing oh the deck to do it!:)

Dan, good point. Great point:D

Whew, I am wiped. I ended up cutting wood for my bro all day today so if it's cool with you guys I think I punch out for the day.:D

I'd really like to see if I can get her cleaned up and another round of prep tomorrow.

Cheers!

Jason... absolutely!! Never think you're going to build it so well that nothing will ever go wrong...lol.. There's only about a 1 FT section that my fuel hose goes under permanent decking and there's a 4" access hole in the bilge right next to it... so I don't think I will ever have to tear up the decking... I HOPE!!!

OK, so this morning...

Clean, sand, clean, sand, clean, sand, repeat...
P1040292.jpg

I did pick up one of these nylon wheels to clean out the tight spots and rivet heads...
P1040291.jpg

I could use some advice on my window gaskets...

P1040287.jpg

P1040289.jpg

Anybody have a line on what I can replace this stuff with?

Am I reading that I could use something like 3M 4000UV as a replacement?

I will also need to replace this foam strip that goes under the windshield...
P1040290.jpg

Any idear on where I can get something like that?

Thanks in advance guys!:)

Happy Sunday!

Jas, is there any chance you can supply me with dimensions and a side profile? A drawing is fine. Most of those gaskets can be found. They are used for mobile homes, campers, camper shells, storm windows, etc. The bottom foam can be purchased at Lowes or HD, the type used for home insulation around windows & doors but they will degrade. I prefer a material call Tuffak. It is a combination of rubber and core material used on older car restorations and comes in a variety of thicknesses. Give me info and I'll see what I can get.;)

Jasoutside, can you tell me where you found that grinding wheel?

Been looking for awhile and can't find that type. They are great for aluminum.

I found all shapes and sizes of those wheels at my local ACE hardware store. I have picked up several to use on my Islander as well and they work pretty good.

Jas, I do have a question about painting. Are you using rattle cans or spraying it on with a gun? Just wondering as I have seen Rustolium mentioned and do not know if it comes in a form other than a rattle can. Same goes for the primer, I thought I saw someone say that they used it but it was a rattle can. Just kind of confused on my part:redface:.

My windsield is in ok shape but I'd love to at some point take it apart, polish it, have tinted glass made and laid in with updated gaskets, etc from a windshield/glass shop to give it that final touch.

OK, so I started pulling gasket tonight. Got one window done then I was struggling with the other. My HF heat gun helped some. Hang tight and I'll see if I can get the rest out in the next day or two.

Thanks for the tip on the Tuffak bro! Yah, that makes sense that it's probably just weather stripping stuff.

Yah, I got mine at Menard's (love that place). They too had a whole variety. It's not so much for removing paint (it'll kinda melt a little) but more for cleaning out the tight spots.

I actually haven't done any painting on the rig yet so all theory at this point:redface:

1. Lots of sanding and cleaning. I'm not particularly interested in getting to bare metal though I will in some spots. Paint is pretty good for the most part. I do have a lot of holes to fill on the gunwales, bow deck and stern deck.

2. Self Etching Zinc Chromate on the bare spots. Very light sanding and clean again.

3. Rustolium clean metal primer.

4. Rustolium High Performance Enamel. http://www.rustoleum.com/CBGProduct.asp?pid=130

For the primer and top coat I'll only be using a rattle can for the tight spots and window frames. The rest will be rolled.

Like I said though, all theory for now.

You can get the gallon cans of Rustolium at pretty much any of the big box places.

You can ask EZ what it's like to rattle can a whole boat:eek:

You have me wondering if I should just haul the boat over to the auto glass place and have them install some new gasket. I can't think it would be all that expensive?? Maybe I'll check on that.

You might want to go base/clear. Flames and fades with some freak drops and webbing just to be cool. I cant wait to see some color on her men

You do NOT want to use rattle cans. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Paint held up great but the finish wasn't good and it used a TON of cans. You'd drop a pile of money doing it that way.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

jasoutside,

I just finished replacing all the gaskets in my windshield. I bought them from a company in Florida that specializes in building boat windshields.

link

http://www.oceandynamics.com/

I cut some samples of my old gaskets and measured what lengths I needed and sent them to Oceandynamics so they could match them up and send me what I needed. They were a little slow (busy small company I guess) but I stayed on top of them and they came through with what I needed. Cost me about $60 for everything I needed.

Here is a link to the thread I started on it.

Give Ocean a call, I bet they can help you.

Going with that paint scheme would be a huge risk. My kiddos would either be scared to death and never get in the boat or they might think it's the coolest thing in the world and never get out!

Thanks drew! Yah, I caught your thread on your windshield re build, nice work man!

Thanks for the links, appreciate your help:)

Rustoleum also makes boat paint, both top and bottom.

Yah, my local Menard's even carries it. I wonder what the difference is besides the label and the price?? Hmmmmm.

So, any comments on using 3M 4000 UV rather than gasket? Dumb idea? I know I'd be saving some cash anyway.

I know the guys were talking about it over here...

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=451535&highlight=window

...but I'm not certain they were talking about sealing up the frame to the hull or the window to the frame??

Just thinking out loud I suppose. What do you guys think?

You can use sealant Jas. The main thing to remember is the glass must not make contact with the metal. With all the rough riding on the water, you would not want the glass to break because of contact. Tempered glass is strong but the weakest area is on the edges. You could use small pieces of the gasket, or even use duct tape, to wrap the edges in spots to center the glass in the track. Then seal everything. Before sealing, tape it off to make cleaning easier. I also spray the bead I applied with glass cleaner and use a razor blade to trim it up. The cleaner keeps the sealant from sticking to the frame, glass, & razor blade.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks Dale, I might just go that route. I am pretty sure I can make it look nice/finished.

Hey buddy you mentioned paint scheme, so check this out...

The guy I bought those other seats from (that ultimately went to fsh here) said he had another pair. Come to find out, here is what he had...

P1040293.jpg

P1040294.jpg

He said $250 + shipping for the pair. I said, um, yup!

So here is my issue. I was totally and completely set on this scheme (minus all those graphics)...

That blue trim on my new seats is kinda throwing me off a little now though. I am kinda, sorta a simple guy and am not really looking to have too many things going on (plus I am a little picky). So now I am wondering if I should be going this route instead...

(I bet some of you guys are rolling your eyes thinking "come on, get over it dude")

I still have a long time before I have to decide as this won't be painted until spring. Also, it won't prevent me from painting the bottom hull now as either way it will be white.

What do you guys think? I think I am on the fence now.
