Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Attendant: Peanuts?
Ace Ventura: [looks down] Yes, I have one right here. It's bulky, but I consider it carry-on.
Attendant: [holding bag of peanuts] Peanuts.
Ace Ventura: Oh, I see.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

[after Ace drives the jeep on a disastrous journey through the jungle]
Ace Ventura: Ah, there's the consulate.
Fulton Greenwall: Oh, thank God.
Ace Ventura: [still driving at top speed] Now if I can just find a parking spot.
Fulton Greenwall: Perhaps we should slow down just a teensy-weensy bit?
Ace Ventura: Nonsense, poopy-pants.
Fulton Greenwall: We're going a bit fast. Really.
[Ace sends the jeep flipping through the air, until it lands in the carpark]
Ace Ventura: Like a glove.

Jason. please don't mis understand me but I and the family have been through a lot in the past few years too. I have come to believe ( I had to) that God does things for a reason. I can't help but think thats why you have that boat. It gives you something to help take your mind off of things for a bit. Family & friends are great, but a person needs some alone time too. I just wanted to say that.
Congrats on the transom, wanna come do mine?

God Bless

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Kind of eerie...I just did the exact same thing tonight, scrap board and straps holding the gunwall tops up and all, just lik PR....check out my thread, only one pic though.....

Hey, did you drill any holes in the transom before you put the epoxy on?

Yah, my original plan was to simply drill and fill with 4200. We'll see if I follow through with that or go the over-drill, fill with epoxy and re-drill route.

You sure made that look easy from here:)

That light at the end of the tunnel just got a faint glow starting up and getting brighter.

Yah buddy! Getting the transom in a Gluvit down was a couple of great steps forward!

So check this out guys...

I have been planning all along to rebuild everything and then paint.

Well, over the past few days (weeks really) I have been doing backyard boat builder physics in my head and I am pretty sure I have a way to flip this Islander. Safely. Maybe.

The idea of having this rig upright and being on my back sanding this hull seems less appealing by the day.

So, I might be changing up my order of things and be moving into paint phase. Temps permitting. Hmmmmmm. We'll see.

Cheers!

"backyard boat builder physics"
LOL
Oh Carp! Now someone is really in trouble. "Maybe"= Really?

Has anyone tried re-enforceing the interior a bit and laying the bigger boats on their side? You can do 1/2 at a time. Just curious.
Make sure you get the design approved by the Starmada Board Jason, we don't want you to get injured.:D

I think I have things pretty well figured how to flip it, I want to think on it just a little more. Figuring how to get it back without mucking the new paint job would be just a little trickier, though I believe I just about have that shored up too.

Once I work it through in my noodle I'll present my plan to "The Board".

Or, skip that step and just post photos of the blazing inferno:eek::eek:

Looking good Jason. Starcraft boats are good therapy, for father and son. I hope everything works out with Ethan, Zach and I will add him to our prayer list.

I fish the sucker run in Omer every March. Meet us out there, hopefully the kids will be healthy then. We can throw them out in the Rifle river and drag them back to shore a few times. Dry them out next to a pine wood fire. Just to toughen them up a bit.

I know I talk a tough game, I'm really a softie inside. I cried when Steve Yzerman hoisted the Stanley Cup in 98. Wifey says "did you cry when Zach was born?" Me, "nope", her "you'll cry over hockey", me, "it's PLAYOFF hockey".

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for stopping by dudes!

Ok, here is a quick update...

I laid down a bed of PL on the inside of that aluminum angle that sits on top of the transom in an effort to KEEP ALL WATER OUT! See look, eh...

(That is just a ply scrap on the outside to keep things flat across the back there)

Yah I know, I'll never get that aluminum off, no matter.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I checked on the Gluvit, pretty hard, just tacky yet. I am really happy with how that Gluvit went down, really great stuff. I didn't use the whole gallon - I might even have enough left over for, oh I don't know, say a new 16' project boat maybe?:D Still on the hunt for one of those.

I wasn't able to get the seam where the bottom and side hull meet as there is a reinforcement aluminum piece there...

Ah well, maybe I'll run some Gluvit on the outside, just have to be a little more careful/neater.

Well just look at you! Once you got the motor running, there is no stopping ya. At that pace you will be done in a month..or two. Heck while your waiting on the Gluvit you may as well apply to the outside. If I am right, you can always sand it when/if you need to, That way you wont be in a delay phase when your ready to paint. Great work Jas.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

You know fsh, sense you mentioned putting the rig on it's side rather than flip entirely I have been thinking on that quite a bit. That might just be the way to go on it. Cool thing would be I could stand and do most of the work vs. laying on the hull and reaching to sand/paint if it were belly up.

HHhhmmmmmmmmm....:D

It begins...

Nice work with the pl bead. I'll be doing the same with 4200 next week before I put her away for sure. That piece was definately rotten on my old transom.

Yah sprint, that aluminum angle sitting on top of the transom just seemed to invite water/rot - not anymore!

I am hoping that the day some fella decides the transom needs to be replaced I'll be worm food!:D

I didn't even know that pieces of Thumper are still laying around:D

Nice haul to salvage there for sure. You made out nicely on that Baja purchase, and it seems to be working out pretty well. Nice job.

What's the verdict on painting? Getting kinda cold around here but I'm going to be painting my little boat this weekend hopefully:)

The tilt method might work for me since my deck is in and flipping would be more difficult.

Nice progress man, keep up the good work!:D
