Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I didn't even know that pieces of Thumper are still laying around:D

Nice haul to salvage there for sure. You made out nicely on that Baja purchase, and it seems to be working out pretty well. Nice job.

What's the verdict on painting? Getting kinda cold around here but I'm going to be painting my little boat this weekend hopefully:)

The tilt method might work for me since my deck is in and flipping would be more difficult.

Nice progress man, keep up the good work!:D

Yah, I figured I'll post whats left of the Baja up on eBay. Should bring me enough to fund a GPS/FF, right?:D

Yup, that sacrificial Baja turned out awesome now dude!! Really happy about that score!

I think I'll need to play paint by ear for the moment keeping an eye on the temps.

Kinda sorta what I am thinking is to work on the transom (making the keyhole cut, mounting all the gear) and pick away at paint prep too. If I play my cards right maybe I can be in paint phase before winter is really here. We'll see.

Have a great Sat guys!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Got just a couple of things done today...

First up, load of wood from the stack up to the house. Winter is coming!
IMAG0101.jpg

Then I had a few minutes to pull some rigging off of the old transom in between the rain and my boys soccer game. Steering and throttle cables, wiring harness, power steering, battery bracket and whatever else...

Turned to the pulling off the gimbal housing/transom assembly. I just about got all the bolts off except for the bottom two. They would be behind the Y Pipes. It was getting pretty dark so I called it a day.

Hey Merc IO guys, I can see that I can fit a wrench back in there behind the Y Pipes, barely. Do I have to take off the Y Pipes to get everything apart or can I leave them in place? I think I saw a star drive to get those pipes off?

Have a good one fellas!

Holy Cow Jas that enough wood to last me a few years! It sure looks like you made good use of the day. Did ya mow the lawn, wax the cars and shave the cat too?
That star drive is called a Torx. I just enjoy seeing you make progress bro.;)

Its a 3/8ths 12 point socket and its a heck of allot easier to get those last 2 bolts when the Y-pipe is off...

About 4 or 5 loads like that will keep my bride and kiddos warm all winter long. I am way to stubborn and cheap to buy propane buddy. I figure I save about $2500 - $3000 every year in LP costs. Maybe more, my wife especially likes it in the mid 70s inside when it's 10 below outside. No prob, I just throw another log on!

Skin the cat, that's a gooden. Nope, but I did clean the garage again. I have know idea who keeps messing that up!

Torx - got it, thanks. When I did my Merc Service Tech training and certification back in the day my instructor called it a star drive. They must have made some changes to the program.:D

Cool, thanks Alpheus appreciate ya stopping in. It looks like a new socket set might have to find it's way to my shop. Yah, I think I could get a wrench back there but with how much room I have to work with prolly take me till spring to get it off.

Have a great Sunday guys!

Sorry Jas, I misunderstood you. Alpheus is right with the 12pt socket. I was thinking more of a screw/bolt head I have encountered before.
4 or 5 LOADS??? Just how big is the Jason & Family Mansion?? 9000 sq ft? You remind me of another good friend of mine. He only heats with wood, nothing else. He dosen't need a fence as his whole back yard (1 acre) is surrounded with 6' tall and 4' wide rows of stacked wood. Kinda like a fortress:D

Yah know what, I didn't have my one full pot of coffee in me yet and my math is a little off this am. I really shouldn't talk/type unless I have had at least 1/2 pot.

Actually, should be closer to 3ish (give or take) loads like that. I usually burn about 5 1/2 - 6 cord per winter. Me vs. the propane guy, I win every year.:D

Looks like thing are moving along well for you J. My SS is in the garage with the drive off waiting for me to finish other projects. I wish we could use wood for heat, it's great exercise, and cheap heat. But where we live I would have to drive 5 hours to get the wood and then deal with brining it in from another Province, just not worth it, I quess I could go out and re open one of the old coal mines around here?????

Thanks buddy! Yah, heating with wood has to be done right or it really isn't worth it. I have all that I need right here on my property, so free wood, fuel is next to nothing, the first year of heating paid for my saw, splitter, and related equip., house came with the wood burning furnace, I sweep my own chimney...

So pretty much just my time really. I improve my system every year cutting down on the number of times I handle each piece of wood.

Tell ya what, when my two boys get older the whole deal will get waayyyyyy faster and easier!:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Besides unloading that trailer of wood and a bunch of other stuff I tackled that old Baja transom...

First up, Y Pipes off...
P1030856.jpg

Pretty easy to do, and made the rest go easy too. That would have been ridiculous to leave them there.

Then the inner transom plate unbolted and popped off...
P1030858.jpg

P1030859.jpg

Gimbal housing off...
P1030860.jpg

Pulled out the sawzall and cut/peeled away the glass skin for a keyhole template...
P1030863.jpg

Then I cut away a chunk of the transom. I am thinking I may use this to help guide my blade in cutting the new keyhole, maybe...
P1030865.jpg

That was all I had time for today, still forward motion, eh.

Well I read the whole thread and was hoping that you had the motor in, but no such luck. I have a 1967 22 ft Islander as well and am thinking of putting a 4.3 in it, but don't know just yet. The only thing I have going for me is that I already have a merc in place, at least for now. Still can't get the damn outdrive off though, have a thread for that as well. Anyway I can't wait to see how she runs when you get that V6 in her. You are doing a great job there Jas, keep it up buddy.

That Baja is the gist that keeps on giving, good idea to use the templates as much as possible.

Ya know one advantage to working at a "less frantic" pace is being able to stand and stare at stuff, thinking and pondering...to make sure all angles are covered.

Forward progress is good:)

Oh man, you read the whole thing! Wow!

Yah, sorry the Merc isn't in yet - I really wish it was. I'm sure you figured out that I am about the slowest rebuilder here on iboats. Hopefully I can give a full report on the V6 next summer buddy.

I caught your thread on the OD being stuck. Since I know, well nothing, I haven't been able to help ya out - wish I could. Have you tried blasting powder? Jack hammer? Chain it to a big ol truck? Ah, you'll get er off!

Thanks for stopping buy man, all the best on your rig!

Man do I do a lot of that...

When I was "standing and staring" today wife says...

"What are you doing out there???"

"Thinking Jen, thinking."

"About what??"

"Uh, well, everything pretty much."

You can get a sick amount of work done in a day...especially that wood day. Do you get up before the sun :)

My accomplishment on Sunday was putting the third row seats back into the Yukon and putting the new boat cover on :)

That's a lot more than I got done Sprinter! I don't own a three row car, so all I managed was to put a waterproof tarp over my cover as it's coming into the wettest part of the year here. That took two beers worth of effort and the effort to open them took another two to recover!

But you're right, Jason is working his butt off on his Islander, despite his modesty in continually claiming to be the slowest resto-guy on iboats! :D

BwaaaaHaaaaaa

Mr Sprintst, I believe in my studies into the habits of Mr Jas have concluded the man does not sleep. After a quick inquery into the times shown on his posts, I have discovered he starts posting approximately around 3am. We here at the sleep deprivation institute are very concerned about him as can be witnessed by his wide variations of replies and the humor contained in them. We are afraid he is not of the 'right' mental capacity as other would assume.
Thank you for noticing and please assist us in the rehabilitation of this fine gentleman.
