Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks a bunch fellas! Yah, a few minutes, maybe an hour here and there, this big girl will get there!

As for sleep, yah well if you check you'll also notice that I really have no ability to function much past about 8pm. The mind surely turns to jello about 9pm.

Thinking back, I have no real memory of the sun beating me out of bed (save my drinking days which are long over). Sunrise is my favorite part of the day, I'd hate to miss it!

I didn't have any time on the rig yesterday, bummer.

But, the post man did bring me this stuff...

http://durafix.com/demo/256.html

I don't remember seeing anybody around here use it so I'll give you guys a full report.

I bought it mainly to fix/fill these spots on my trim. My entire cockpit got bigger when I cut away those gunwales so I had to scab in some extra trim...

It may come in handy for some other stuff too, we'll see.

Have a good one guys!!:)

That stuff is interesting, what type of torch do you need to get the right temp?

I wonder if it works well on anodized aluminum trim. If that works out for you I might want to try to repair my broken dash trim(the kids had too much fun playing with it one day, broken in two places:eek:).

Those pieces look anodized to me just like the one I need to fix.

Still good painting weather around here for another couple weeks:)

Jas if that stuff works like it shows, then you just found a great product! Holes, cracks, loose seams are a thing of the past. Very impressive.:D

Yah dudes, we'll see if it works. I don't mind being a genie pig one bit. I'll give it a shot on some less noticeable parts, or scrap, to get the feel for it before I hit those trim pieces.

They claim any old canned gas works. I have MAP gas for my BernzOmatic. Something like 730 deg. if I remember (could be way off). We'll give er a shot!

Yah Mike, I had windows wide open last night - it's warm! Wish I was a little closer to paint phase to take advantage of it. Ah well.

Cheers!

OK Jason. I apologize for taking so long on this. If you press the lip on the end of the tape against the overlapping part of the seam on the bottom of the boat the measurement to the bottom of the hole is 5 3/4". Continuing from the same starting point, the top of the hole is 21 3/4".

Hope this helps!

J I have to agree with your statement about missing the sun rise but I'm in the shop when that happens but do try and glimps out one of the windows as it happens it is truely the best part of the day. Good luck on the new patch material

Yeah I love the sunrise but I always feel so danged bad when it's happening. I don't know why they can't change the time so it's about 9:30 when it happens:D

Hey NB and CBK,

Errmm, why not just put your watch forward two hours! Call it EST or Eastern Starcraft Time. :D :p

Usually the only time I catch a sunrise is on the water fishing...and I usually don't care if we catch any fish for a little while so I can drink my coffee and enjoy it.:D

Sun up's around 0430 here at this time of year, so it's a rare event for me to see the sunrise... :(

... though when I do... :)

That is a beautiful pic TII. Although I am up betewwen 4:30 & 5, I don't get to enjoy the sunrise while at work.:(
There is something special about being on the water, watching the fog and mist slowly move over the mirror like surface of the water. A few ripples here and there from the baitfish moving around and not hearing anything but nature. Then the sun smiles on your face and you know there is a God.
As my wife and family knows, life don't get much better for old fshngho.:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

One of my favorite fishing memories of all time...

I was probably 10 years old or so, fishing with my father in our little 12' SeaKing/4hp Evenrude, right at daybreak with the sun just barely coming over the horizon.

A huge flock of Canadian Geese had just taken off and were already coming in to full on V formation. They passed directly over our heads, really within just a couple of feet. If I stretched I might have been able to touch one of them. I vividly remember hearing the wind passing through their wings as they flew by.

Awesome.:D

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK fellas, got some important work done tonight...

Grabbed my Merc Installation Manual and a several measuring devices to find my "X Dimention"...
P1030894.jpg

I took the glass cut out from the Baja and made myself a cardboard cutout as it's a little easier to handle...
P1030895.jpg

I used the specifications that I found after some digging way back last winter when I picked up this Merc (knew this day would come). Thanks to Don S. on that!
P1030897.jpg

Laid out the "X Dimention" on the template...
P1030896.jpg

Got out the old school exacto knife and cut out the keyhole, taped it up matching the "X"...
P1030900.jpg

And here it is, the Merc keyhole cut all ready for a blade...
P1030901.jpg

This setup cost me nothing save a little time reading/researching what all the awesome guys have put together here on iboats. Thanks again guys!

Didn't have the guts (or the time) to make the cut tonight. I think I'll let this age gracefully for a day or two like fine wine (read: measure several more times before I commit).

Have a good one!

J besides your template from Thumper why don't you just take the merc cut out print to staples or such and have them blow it up to scale and print it on tracing paper but I suppose the tempate from thumper wil work just fine So like NB said start hacking but I woud measure @ least 20 more times.

Yah, if I screw this one up we could use it as a planter lawn ornament sort of a thing. Good call.

Yah I think I may do that, though...

The original that the actual Merc was sitting in should be about as good as anything, eh?

Really the most critical measurements would the "X". Even there the horizontal is the more important of the two as it sets the height for everything. Vertical/centerline is the easy one of the two.

Maybe I'll grab my sawzall, cover my eyes and see what happens:eek::eek:

Cheers!

BUT!!!!!!! before the cut just measure the hieght of the motor mounts to the center line of the cut out template and compare them to the distance of the bottom of the actual motor mounts on the engine to the center of the crank and compare them to the center line of the cut out dimesion. Never hurts to be safe it'll only take a second or two compared to all theat potting soil you'd have to come up with!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
