Thanks fellas!

Yah, the velcro, I really think it'll work perfect. I was convinced of the strength of velcro when I pulled up the cabin decking that I had installed originally in this Islander. See, way back at that install I used velcro then:

Well, when I pulled those pieces up after I chopped the top, I had to use all my strength to pull the velcro apart. Much grunting!

If I'm wrong on this route, all I really need to do is sink a few fasteners through the back side, no sweat. Star tuned and we'll see:thumb:

Actually Velcro is very tenacious. I've not used in a boating application but on other projects and yes, it should work perfectly.

Industrial Velcro is mean stuff and the adhesive on the back is wicked too. Velcro just doesn't like a lot of weight, it looses the battle one hook at a time until the heavy object falls. For your application that's what that stuff was made for.

You just couldn't stay away....

I did check with a local doctor - the only solution for your MBS is for the state of Michigan to pass a law banning snow days / extreme temperature days.

No jury will convict a woman for killing her husband for having an affair with tin boats

True there Ben! Heck, they may give her an award or something!;)

Actually TII, that Mariner was mine just for a day really, ha! We're going to run with a Sea Nymph instead:becky:

Yah, snow days are sweet! They give me that totally unplanned, surprise, non scheduled day to do whatever I want/need. They are always a super special gift to me:horn::party:

OK guys, I do believe the coldest days of winter are now behind us. I think were are back up into the mid 20s during the day and teens at night. Certainly not warm but sure not as cold anyway.

Hopefully I can get back on track here pretty quick ya know.

Happy Friday one and all!:whoo::highly_amused:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

All right fellas, the weather dood says a big storm is headed our way . But, the good news is the temps have come up to a comfortable mid teens range which makes working in the garage a whole lot more tolerable.

So, progress post! I'm super excited to get going on to this work :encouragement: trimming the inside of the gunwales. This is such a tricky and tough install.

So anyhow, here's how it's shaken out...

Most of the lumber yards carry 1/16" angle but I found 1/20" over at Home Depot. That thickness bends and forms a little easier so that's what I went with. For fasteners I used snaps instead of rivets. See, this spring I'll have my local upholstery guy make a bow cover for this new bowless boat. So, with the snaps, I kinda kill two birds with one stone ya know.

So the way I start is I set and clamp the one end of the alum angle at the centerline of the bow. Then, grab my MAP Gas BurnZoMatic and very slowly, very carefully heat and form the alum to the gunwale. I use my hands (doule leather gloved) as much as I can so I can feel the alum warming up and start to give way.

gentle - slow - tricky

Here's a shot after I heated and rough formed my way around....

Then, I come back and really tighten everything up with the clamps as I sink the fasteners and work my way around...

Done!

It's a fine line between gently forming and bending a big ol crease into that alum. I think that turned out pretty darn good, very happy!

I have some clean up work to do and then run the same process on the starboard side, hopefully I can get that done tomorrow morning.

Really glad this part is getting done!:thumb:

Wow, you'd never know that that was once a perfectly good old islander!

Just kidding man, it looks fantastic all around. You're making the most of boat building season...this is gonna be a great rig.

1/20th, not sure I've eyed that yet at my HD, it looks good as a trim piece. :encouragement:

Yea heat bending I did that on my SN's cap. You have to be careful about causing collateral damage with the torch. I see your white paint suffered a bit of crispyness in spots. ;)

Real nice job, if you have a heat gun set it on high and have at it. That is how I bent the trim pieces on the 201, not enough heat to melt the aluminum but loads for forming it.

One of the best builds I've seen so far. I really am amazed, very nice work!

Fabricator? Nah. Maybe if I actually had the right tools to do this kinda work, but, not so much. Ah, it's all good, my shadetree methods will suffice eh:joyous:

HA! Yah, no doubt. Poor little headless Islander:lol:

Yah, lil toasted here and there. No sweat though, I planned all along to re paint the gunwales;)

I dunno if my HF heat gun would get the alum hot enough to actually form it. Hmmm, maybe?

Thanks for the kind words man!

AOK, this morning, starboard side trim installed!
P1110889.jpg

My skills weren't as good as yesterday so I got a few wrinkles here and there. Not a big deal, once I clean them up and the back cushion is installed, should be hardly noticeable. So, I get a B+ for the port side and a B- for the starboard.

The rest of the trim is straight on so that will all be a snap to install.

Happy Sunday fellas!:joyous:

Fab work is great for a DIY backyard tin boat builder, and using snaps for a future bow cover suggests that your melon has survived the repeated frying pan whollups, intact & functioning reasonably well :watermelon:

Nicely done

Looks like a good, productive weekend, Jas. She's looking like she was built this way, not at all like a modded Islander. :thumb:

Some of your wrinkles will work themselves out over time. That velcro is real close to plastic isnt it? Plastic is almost like fiberglass. Are you sure you really are a tin guy or maybe deep down. Just saying.
