Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

There was one fella who stopped by this thread and actually posted a video of his Islander with a monster 454 Mag in it, whough baby! Wish I could find it right quick

I was just kicking around a 305. A 454.....ahhh....I don't know if I have enough clean undies for a ride in that...

Yah, lots of 305's laying around in dead glassers here in MI. I'd bet that would be the same for you too.

I really wanted to try and stay with the 4.3 for the weight and space savings at similar HP range ya know. Far less el cheepo 4.3 and 5.7 in my area. Plenty of old 120/140/2.5/3.0 and 5.0's round here.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

well i might pull the engine and drive this year before winter so its all ready for me to repair the transom in the spring, i live in upstate ny and its getting cold here already :grumpy: as long as i can get it running i was able to pick up a rebuilt starter for it today 54$ so i was pretty happy about that. i also have a lead on a newer merc. 350 and drive if this one is junk :)

what did you use to bolt the plywood and aluminum together no the transom yours looks much neater then mine currently does and would like to duplicate what you used.. rivets or stainless bolts? thanks truly inspired me to take on this project seeing what yours is turning into!

Just a simple question/suggestion based on my experience with Grumman 18' SKI N FISH... the transom on that boat (OB) sat in an aluminum tray with no drain holes so water from floor drained to back of boat, into and around the tray, wicked up into the wood voila! -- the transom was mulch. So, not knowing what your I/O floor junction to transom is like, beware the non-self-draining tray for a transom!

Regards from sunny, not so warm South Carolina -- 29 this morning (cold for us!)

That was your stern light, man! Boat that size, back in the day, used stern light, all around light on the windshield, and bow lights.

Ya, same here. 305's are a dime a dozen. The 4.3's even in a junk glasser are still somewhat expensive for some reason. Oh well, lots of winter left to look for one. Gotta go shovel off my roof. Have a great weekend Jas.

Good choice, I'll remember that on my Penn Yan, much more durable than dryer hose!

Hey Peter: Context would be great ^^^

Thanks, JB. I thought I was losing my mind until I realized that happened a long time ago and Peter is commenting on stuff from eons past and answering questions long answered.

Sorry, guys...hadn't looked at JB's posts in a long while, opened yesterday to see a bowrider-in-progress and could not figure out what had become of the cabin cruiser! So, I went back and back and back...

JB, you're an audacious fearless adventurer, "going where no man has ever tread"!! The boat looks great! I'm sure wife and kids will enjoy it immensely!

Well there you have it. The new nickname for my Admiral to use w/ genuinely sincere, heartfelt warmth: Audacious, fearless adventurer, going where no man has ever tread.

Well heck ya. Easy peasy. No problem bro-ham. You're very welcome, is wrapping it up by next Thurs going to work OK for you? :faint2:

Great, ok, gotta run, lots of work to get done in the next 4 & a half days.

Man, I'm gonna need a super size batman coffee mug w/ an extra heavy dose of 5200..... Anybody know a nurse that can just run an IV coffee drip wide open into my jugular vein?

Just a quick question before I get back to it: Do you prefer the Red or the Green? 'Cause this build just took a turn down The Red Green show boulevard..

This message was NOT brought to you by a few wobbly pops......

Hey Tim, ya, even with the garage it's been kinda tough to get some progress going. I have upholstery work in the basement that's ready to go but running the staple gun at 4am isn't helpful for my marriage. And, it's so stinkin cold around here lately I just can't justify burning LP or wood to bring that up to reasonable temp for an hour or two of work. Soooooo, yah, just kinda doing other things lately.

I see the weather may warm just a little bit for us next weekend, so until then:smow::smow::smow::smow::smow::smow:

You guys are going to crack up when you hear what I have named this Islander! I named her the day I brought her home and since then, well, she has lived up to it, ha!

All right, new goal for the day, bow upholstery.
