I love it, I was afraid this project would be eliminated for funds or space (or both). Good job on the cuddy removal, I think you are doing something really cool with this boat. I wish I had space for a pole barn!!! saaaweeeeeet.

BTW. Giant SS = :clap2:

I like this but I'd lower the front seats to allow for back rests.Stowage is always good.

Jas, looks really nice...already. Your mock-up of the seats etc...

Just one question, do you need some type of support going from port to starboard to control hull flex, etc...?
Maybe, a rib that is somewhat hidden by the helm area(yet to be built).

Just a thought.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

P.S. Mad photoshop skillz

They are pretty awesome huh:becky:

one comment, though, since you have traded off your smaller fishing rig...

You know, when I first decided to cut the top off and build a bowrider I was thinking just family fun stuff. But yesterday and today was was thinking through several cool fishing type options that will be built in. So, in the end I think I can kinda sorta make it a Ski & Fish boat? Yah, I think so!

Which is really good because the hard core big water fishing boat isn't going to be ready for a very long time:facepalm:

I like it. Sure looks a whole lot different!

This Islander just went a whole different direction!

I have a 22' cc starcraft for the bay and it is perfect!

Yah, she should be great for the bay, or any of the other big lakes for that matter:thumb:

I think you are doing something really cool with this boat.

Yah, it was kinda fun setting up those cushions this morning and thinking through the build from here:joyous:

Stowage is always good.

Yah, I should have plenty of open spaces to store all sorts of stuff. I was thinking right here, at the bow deck, I'd install a big hatch door with gas springs to support....

I could use that for rod and downrigger storage, pretty cool!

i like option 1

Thanks man, I'm a little torn at the moment. Once I score a windsheild that should help my decision along.

Just one question, do you need some type of support going from port to starboard to control hull flex, etc...?

Nope, there's plenty of structure in there for now and I'll be adding more in as I build out the bow deck. The gunwales are a little floppy at the moment but I'll be adding a bunch of stuff there too.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I was thinking this morning...

#1 Man did it take a long time to build out the bow on my Jet Star when I cut that out.

#2 Man did it take a long time to build out the bow deck on my Sea Nymph to get it just the way I wanted it.

Now, for this Islander, I need to do both.

So, with this major change in direction, I can't think that I can have this boat wrapped up by winter. I'm not so bummed though, I just took about a hundred steps backward, and, I need to make up some ground. It's all good:thumb:

I think that little MirroCraft could be your short time boat for going out and messing around (also the closest to usable), you spend a couple weeks making it nice and you might not miss the two big boats as much for the next 4 or 5 months.

to bad you couldnt make the cabin reattachable if you wanted like a hybrid dual purpose apparatus. this thread is like a novel with unpredictable plot twists :) good job i cant wait to see what she looks like all finished !

Okay, bizarre how much has happened since Friday morning, how is it that a guy that takes 4 pages of post to decide on battery placement can plan and implement a Bowectomy on an almost finished Islander.:der::frusty: you got my attention now Jason.

I may in the minority based on opinions already expressed, but I like option 2. Having the helm seat closer to midships will give you a much smoother ride in chop, and I think there would still be plenty of cockpit room, and lots of room up in the bow.

Sorta like this:

Compared to this (which is closer to option 1):

I dunno, they're both pretty cool setups. I'm sure you'll figure out the best layout for your specific needs.

EDIT: I forgot that you've got an I/O in there, so that'll push my vote to #1. Ha.

I agree, make the bow area bigger!

More bow!!

oh and I loved that picture of your wife sitting in the new boat, I explained the whole thing to my wife, and then showed her the picture.

She felt her pain.

I also told my wife I would totally chop the top of the chief if I had your skills, and scored that 24+ft boat. :D

Sorry about the late reply. Took a while for the Docs to bring me back after I saw the new bow-rider. Will have to sit back with some popcorn to find out what happens next.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I got it!

So this morning I was moving around the seating again just to be sure I was happy with what I see. Option #1 and #2 are scrapped and we are going with option #3! Check it out, so I went ahead and moved the captains chairs back further yet and I added in the center bow cushion...

P1110342.jpg

Way better! That'll be a pretty cool setup!

Throw on the windshield, add in the consoles, BAM!
d3819074-debe-49af-aa2f-9d57c2270554.jpg

For the bench I'll still have these big removable cushions. I can still easily fit 4 full grown butts on those...

Now yah, I do recognize that I'll be losing those two hatches there where the captains chairs will go. So, I was thinking I'd just put two access hatches on the seat box sides instead, like this...

I could even install a pair of those recessed tackle box deals like yo...

So yah I'm amped about this!

Ya know, yesterday I said I just took a hundred steps backward (and ya, I did).

But today, I feel like this is a new beginning, knowwhattamean. Excellent!

I was liking option 2, but after seeing the last option. I think #3 is the ticket. Lots of room in the bow and stern. :) YOu just made alot more work for yourself! :drum: ROCK ON!

Jas...Just a word of encouragement(not that you need it). Your plans look awesome!
It's all about the journey. It's not necessarily about the "finished" product. Because, when you're "finished" and enjoying the rig, there will always be something else to do.

I don't see at all that at all you took a hundred steps back...just a new opportunity.

You seem like many of us on here. We're people who always need something to do...then later enjoy what we have done!

My $.02....

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I feel sad that the Islander has lost her top. But I guess I can follow your larger project now.
I guess this hull would make a great open bow being it has the room for nearly anything you could dream up. And I think you have a good plan. The hull is a bit high for a standing platform but the bow seating would be very nice.
How many do you think it could comfortably hold?

Thanks man, I do believe this should work:cool:

Lots of room in the bow and stern.

Yah, plenty o' space to hang out on the lake:joyous:

I don't see at all that at all you took a hundred steps back...just a new opportunity.

Yup, that's exactly what I was feeling this morning ^^^^ :thumb:

I feel sad that the Islander has lost her top. But I guess I can follow your larger project now.

Yah, me too. I had to take a few deep breaths before I touched the cutting wheel to that alum hull. Last night, when I put the trash out there were a couple of big chunks of that metal top mixed in there. That was particularly sad.

Yup, I think so too. There was just no way I could justify having two cabin boats. And, to finish the Islander only to turn around and sell her would have been real bad, for a lot of reasons. I know I couldn't have gotten the $$$ I'd need out of her. Plus, I'd still have to go out and buy an all around fun boat. Plus, well, I want to keep her!:becky:

The hull is a bit high for a standing platform but the bow seating would be very nice.

Yup, that bow will be a great spot for lounging and riding around. I'd guess 3 to 5 comfortably/easily. When it's all said and done, my calculations tell me I should have seating for about 13 on this boat (though I'd never have even close to that many on board). Options are good:thumb:

One other thing I'll be adding to this boat is a bow cover. When it's just the boys and I trolling on the big lake that bow cover will serve the next best option to a closed bow boat eh. She should make for a nice fish and ski rig!
