Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

What the...!?! I had said wife if the year award goes to Jen, is she by any chance a nurse? I get the idea of having a big fishing boat and a smaller "fun" boat but a 22 footer! Eccentric might be the word but I guess this is Jas we're talking about.

I get it, you just didn't want to face dealing the bulkheads again :D I'm right aren't I?

All right, so, I finished the demo work on the hull. Man I tore out a lot of stuff. It was kinda painful to think about how much time I put into building what I just ripped out, ugh.

Oh well.

I also ran the rest of the cut lines, she is now prepped and ready for surgery:thumb:

Next post from me you should see a headless Islander:rockon:

Hey, it was a big day for this Islander! Operation was a success!

(I'm sure my glassr buddies will appreciate seeing a metal boat all chopped up here...)

Wow, some of my insanity has rubbed off on ya... very cool...
I guess now you don't have to worry too much about where to put the batteries with all of the added space...:D

Just an idea but now that you've got the extra cabin space and changed layout, any thought of making a sundeck over engine? Might give you some decent space to fit the batteries down back after all

And it'd prolly make Jenn happy. Her very own space on the boat. You need some extra points after dragging that beast home unannounced.:pound:

Are you taking out the seat/storage boxes too? Are you going for a flat floor front to back? What about the dual fuel tanks? Just curious where you're going with this. I looked at my consoles today, they would not be hard to make from scratch. Probably want to find a windshield first though.....

That's going to be a fast SS with that 4.3....

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok guys, hey, thanks for sticking with me here. I know it prolly doesn't make a whole lot of sense chopping the top like that but like I said earlier, two cabin boats just won't fit the bill eh.

OK, so, let's see here. Yup, I am keeping the two big seat boxes there at midship. I didn't bother to remove that vinyl deck up there for now simply because it gave me something to stand on and work. It'll all get yanked out soon enough.

From here, probably the first step is to start working on the bow decking. My plan is to make it the same height as the current seat boxes. There will be a whole lot of steps to work through but I think I have it figured on how to make it happen. I'll also come back and coat everything in the Deck Over Gray for a uniform look.

I've been thinking through the layout options and I do believe I can sorta narrow them down to two. The super great news is that I can absolutely use my cabin cushions I originally built for this new bow rider, awesome!

(I hope you guys are ready for some fantastic photoshop rendering skilzzzzzz)

Option #1

So with this option I build out the bow deck which will bring it up from it's current location about 4". Then i build some seat/storage boxes just like any Super Sport would and here's round about where the cushions would be...

P1110335.jpg

Now these cushions will be a little too big to also try and fit a windshield, console and captains chair in between them and the midship seat boxes. So, I'd just chop about a third off right here...

Then the captains chairs...

Right about here is where the windshield and consoles would go...

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

For the midship seat boxes I'd make a nice fat but pad and back pad about like this...

These would be easy to remove, snap in probably, so I could just take em out of the way and throw them up in the bow if we were fishing or whatever. I could fit 8 little butts on those or 6 full grown ones.

Option #2

With this option I'd leave those bow cushions full size like they are now...
P1110335.jpg

Add the windshield and consoles...
27e8ced4-3e48-4bc9-be5e-1fdba20a7e20.jpg

I could save those captains chairs for the 261 and instead go with back to backs installed on the current seat boxes...

About like this...
ae5b2b18-5c0f-4f61-bc9f-81794313576d.jpg

Two jump seats at the stern there...
P1110339.jpg

But yah, really I must have the windshield first like Dave mentioned. Once I get that and mock it up I'll have a better idea of what seems to fit best. Knowhattamean?

This boat, and my garage are trashed from this top chop. It's going to take me a day or two just to get that all cleaned up.

OMG...you've got a sickness my friend! At least the cabin portion that was ripped from the Islander's hull is aluminum and recyclable...maybe that will help pay for some therapy? Although, you could save it and use parts for the new structure in the bow?

Crazy days...Crazy!

Oh wow... Didn't expect this twist... This story just got really, really good...

I like the planned mods... (sort of a bigger, i/o, bow-rider, version of the Jet Star)...

one comment, though, since you have traded off your smaller fishing rig... Maybe make the bow rider section convertible into a front cast deck..

I like it. Sure looks a whole lot different!

I like Option #1, as long as the bow area doesn't seem "squeezed" by the consoles.

Now you're going down my road! I have a 22' cc starcraft for the bay and it is perfect! My 24' doesn't slow down enough for walleye so it is exclusively a salmon boat.
