Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Good to see a "thinking out loud" vid, Jas, It's been a while. I think the coaming treatment is good, with the vinyl will add a nice touch.

Yah, I hope it all comes together in the end, we'll see...

Some real good thinking out loud there Jason. Are you going to make your dog/house two piece, like the one in my SS? Just my opinion but it makes checking fluid levels and pre-flight checks easier.

Yah Glen, here's what I'm thinking, basically two options.

Option #1
P1100378.jpg

Either have it hinged at the front to just tip it up and over or on some nice castors to just roll it forward. I'm think a heavy duty latch at the back to hold it in place. Something like http://my.project-jk.com/data/500/medium/Jeep_Zip-tie_Fix_to_Hood_Latch_0761.jpg

I could make the cushion on top removable to access/vent the top of the engine.

Option #2
P1100380.jpg

Or, basically a two piece deal. The lower would be kinda bolted in place but still easily removable. The upper section would be hinged at the front and just tip it forward to access the engine. Maybe a nice set of gas shocks http://www.chaparralboats.com/2011/.../ssw196/slideshow/SSi_196_EngineAccess_11.jpg (that's not my boat or my engine:rolleyes: I'm pretty sure I can keep the lower section short enough to still easily reach the petcocks and oil filter.

I think I may be leaning toward the second option but I suppose either would work fine anyhow.

Happy Sunday guys:joyous:

Hey Jason, my 72 SS has the dog house hinged at the front bottom and I find it a real pain in the butt for checking anything. You end up having to remove the jump seats at the back to do anything cuz the DH is in the way when you tip it forward. With the new system on the SS, the slide bolts hold it side to side and fore and aft, and when I close the top it holds everything down, plus with the top opening to the rear it gives you lots of access without being in the way.

Glen, I just can't get the full effect from way down here. Can you haul that big SS over so I can check it out up close? Thanks man, yur the best!:becky:

I kinda like #2. Also gives top good access to the batteries.

Good thinking vid...
now you got me doing it...
Don't try to take it all in at once, but I thought I would send this your way for consideration...:noidea::rolleyes::sorry:

A 3 piece Doghouse...

Side view of how it works, at least in my head...:twitch:

Quick overview...
Cushion opens for quick pre-flight inspection, venting the engine compartment, etc...
Top engine cover swings forward, no actual "top" to it so you will still be standing on the deck, allows easy access to batteries and closer inspection of any engine related stuff...
Remove all pieces, each individually, light and easy, for complete engine maintenance/repairs
Note; Bottom engine cover can be latched from the inside...
Have Fun Brainstorming!

Jas, multiple sections is the only way to go. A one piece doghouse will dog you no matter how you open it. Reducing to 2 pieces helps some, but the more pieces, the smaller each one will be when you have the parts spread open in an emergency. Combining that with a "self-storing" lid that hinges toward the stern will make life so much easier than dealing with the elephant in the room approach. - Grandad

Just getting caught back up again Jason... Looks like a good design you've got there. I also like where you are going with the bulk head pieces and the gunwale sides! Going to be a sweet ride when you are rockin it this summer on the lake!

Yah, I was just thinking about the original one piece design...

That thing was a beast!

Might have had something to do with the fact is was built out of steel square tubing!

That monster was so heavy ^^^!

OK, nothing extra special here, simple forward motion. Finished up cutting out the cockpit combing panels, easing the edges and getting em all sealed up...

Oh yah...

Over on one of the other threads an iboats joker pointed out that I have more OB's than I do IO's.

(I should really take a count of my drives more often cuz I didn't even think of it till he said that, whoops!)

So yah, whatever!

For the warped thoughts you have on boat propulsion. I really, really, hope your I/O runs flawlessly once it hits the water. If it don't,.......well.......hmmmmm,.... be ready to eat crow.

Just messin' with ya....

Those boards look real shiny!!!

I would try to stay away from a "fat pad" in the back. It is going to take a lot of abuse from leaning over and hooks and such. Just a slim line pad will be better IMO.

You and me both man!:D

Bah, I eat crow all the time, pretty regular thing for me actually. Tastes like chicken!:hungry:

Yah, I hear ya and totally agree. I prolly should have said more like a medium padding. I still want to make it comfortable for leaning over the stern and also as a back rest for the jump seats.

Trying to strike that balance between a working boat and a cruising boat here, ya know:thumb:

My Thompson has a 1/2" board with holes that slide on brackets that are on the boat. It has 1/2" foam on it up to the corners then the vinyl pulled tight on the corners.
