Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Since this one certainly holds the "curl" and is starting to crack, surely time to change it out...
P1100040.jpg

So here's the inside of the pump housing with the stainless impeller cup...
P1100037.jpg

Ant then the base plate off...
P1100039.jpg

So here's the housing. I'm wondering if that rubber junk came from this seal in there, probably...
P1100042.jpg

Given my issues I decided to go with a whole new pump rather than just the impeller, BRP/OMC gear (rather than Sierra/Mallory, $$$)...
P1100059.jpg

Here's a comparison of the old (upper) parts to the new (lower) parts. The kit comes with extra stuff, specifically grommets (1 for short shaft, 1 for long shaft, 1 for 4 stroke) and a small O ring (used on some models, not mine)...

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Now it's time to start putting it all back together. Fist I cleaned/degreased everything. Then I laid a very thin layer of grease + the base plate...
P1100045.jpg

Here's the new housing, no rubber hanging out...
P1100046.jpg

Long Shaft grommet popped into place...
P1100047.jpg

Impeller spun into the impeller cup (little dish soap is good here)...
P1100048.jpg

I globbed on just a bit of grease to that flat section on the drive shaft to hold the pin in place...
P1100051.jpg

Very carefully lined up the notch in the impeller with the pin and slid down the housing...

And on!
P1100053.jpg

Bolted up...
P1100054.jpg

Glob of grease at the drive shaft splines...
P1100056.jpg

By the way, here's my favorite grease...
P1100050.jpg

Way better than no grease. You can find that at any fine grease shop here in the Midwest:thumb:

Next up was just bolting up the Long Shaft extension...

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Now here's what happened on my coupler - it appears on the last water pump maintenance the fella stripped everything out, rats!!!
P1100060.jpg

P1100061.jpg

So after coughing up $$$ for original OMC parts for a new one, time for assembly. Now, the key to get this right (therefor avoiding stripping everything out) is to get that "shoulder" perfectly into the coupler for the screw to slide through...
P1100063.jpg

How I did it was jam my knee under the skeg and lift the lower unit into place. At the same time I was pushing forward on the shifter with my left hand to bring the shift shaft perfectly into position. With my right hand I was lining up the bolt to the coupler. I rand out of appendages otherwise you would have got an interesting photo of me making this move! K, bolted up, nice...
P1100067.jpg

Shifting into reverse brings the lower unit up some to make lining up the bolts easier...
P1100068.jpg

All bolted up!
P1100069.jpg

Water pump maintenance complete! (Besides the water test certainly)

Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Next up was swapping out the lower unit gear oil. Here there is a lower drain/fill screw (NOT to be confused with the Phillips head screw next to it) and an upper vent. Pop off the lower screw, drain...
P1100071.jpg

Kinda dark but no signs of water so that's good.

Hook the pump to the lube bottle, and the hose to the lower fill (more OEM $$$ stuff here, I suppose I don't go bottom feeder on everything)...
P1100072.jpg

Start pumping till gear oil comes out the vent...
P1100073.jpg

Replace the vent screw...
P1100075.jpg

Then the fill screw...
P1100077.jpg

Clean everything up, check for leaks, done! So easy even a Kanuck could do it!

Now I realize most of this stuff is preeeeety basic. But, I thought I'd post up for a fella who may not have run through this basic maintenance before and the info might be helpful.

As for me, I've only barely even touched marine engines (IO and OB) so I'm a total absolute rookie with all of this stuff.

Anything and everything I know to this point comes from right here on iboats (So thanks a ton guys!). Another excellent resource is Leroy's Rambelings, totally awesome...

Welcome to LeeRoy's Ramblings

Anyhow, if you guys see anything I did wrong or needs correction/clarification by all means jump in:thumb:

From here I still need to work through the electric start issues on this kicker, clean/prim/paint/decal, but I'm in no rush.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Looking good, and a little trick I learned from a marine shop, dish soap on the new impeller.

I had 2 new impellers burn up on my lil 9.8hp merc kicker (went out before it even pumped water), so I bought my final impeller from a local shop and they mentioned their use of dish soap on new impellers.

also I have only changed out one evenrude impeller and it was a pain in the butt, merc uses a splined/keyed male and female shift shafts so no silly method to get the shifter free, you just have to make sure the shifter on both ends are in the right position when putting back together.
Only problem with that design is rust, hard to get oil in the splined area, but later mercs switched to stainless (seems so obvious right?!).

Alllllrighty, so, Islander thread note: I'll be MIA for a while. I just hit the "Unsubscribe ALL" button.

The Jasoutside family is running a no "Fbook" (iboats for me), cable is a gonner, and low internet usage plan for a stretch here. I should be back when we mark The Kings Rise.

Have a good one fellas!

Thanks for the water pump tutorial, jas. I'm about to do a couple of those, and this is the most thoroughly documented process I've seen! This should be a "stickied" topic.

Time to upgrade your data usage plan, Jas? :grumpy: Those caps are major suckage.

The only thing in you tutorial is greasing the WP gaskets. They (it's true, I read it on the Internet) say grease allows the gasket to squish out when the bolts are tightened and to assemble dry. On the good motors anyway (Mercs). LOL

See ya when your I-Net frees up. Careful when you start posting all the pics of the progress you make in the mean time or you'll be bouncing off the megabit ceiling in no time. :)

EDIT - Never mind the data cap junk. I am a DUNCE. See ya Easter Sunday or there abouts.

Jas, Nice pictorial. I have two of those to do come spring.

Store up lots of pics. Going to miss the daily treats and updates.

Haven't seen that brand of grease, I'll keep looking:becky:

God Bless the Jas Family during your celebration of the "40 days" of Christ's journey into the desert, or as Catholic's call it Lent.

I wonder what's happened to Jas? The King has returned by now. Maybe the Jas family have enjoyed the Island too much and have disappeared from civilisation... Oxymoron, I know.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, yah, I'm back hanging on iboats, though not much happenin with the Islander since the Evinrude saw action up there^^^. My mid range plan from here is to get back after the cabin bulkheads, work through a couple/few small structure items, and then start working on paint prep (there's a lot to do for that, boring).

The good news is I still fully intend to float this boat this summer and I'm really looking forward to it!:thumb:
