We have two cats and a dog. The cats do a great job keeping the small critter population down around the house. We get many gifts set in front of the door; mice, voles, moles, snakes, chipmunks, squirrels, rabbits and a few birds. Even had a mink and a weasel last summer.

I have two cats and a dog, the dog thinks she is a cat, and I have a large black cat that think's he is a dog, loves baths and water, wags tail and speaks... He thought this was some funny stuff!

The other cat whom knows what she is, was not amused.

She will make some fine seat covers.

Porthole glass turned out good J..... and it was a fraction of glass...... will the UVs degrade the plastic though? Just wondering..

Hey man, great to see ya! Yah, hauling your CC down would be a pretty big undertaking eh? How about just going the long way round? You know Lk. Michigan over to Huron then on through the St. Lawrence Seaway, on to the Atlantic.... Fuel might be a bit spendy;)

Here's what I picked up, cheap on eBay!

Humminbird 597ci HD DI Combo

It's not professional grade gear but it's the best I can do with my budget anyhow.

K, morning progress was just spent thinking on these bulkheads. I've pretty well ruled out mahogany ply, I'm just not into the dark tone.

I know a guy, who knows a guy, who has a buddy :spy: that can get teak at under 7 bux a board foot which is a super deal. Sadly, when I add up what I need it's really painful. I think I may try to price out black locust see how that comes out.

On the port hole glass, that $76 quote is actually as good as it gets so far. Most places can't even get it/make it. I have one more call to make today to see what I can come up with.

Have a great weekend guys!:joyous:

I am using the same Humminbird on my Islander 221.
I think you will be very happy with this unit. I sure am. Mine wasn't cheap though!

Cool action shot, thanks man! Yah, I got a super eBay deal on mine:thumb:

Hey Rico, is your boat back at the factory for paint work eh? I guess I didn't see how that shook out...

It went back to the factory last fall. I called a month ago and they hadn't started yet but I was told they would be soon. I hope this is a quality job and not some guy with a scuff pad and a can of spray paint!
Got to be expensive to truck a boat this size across the country and back.

Yours is looking great though. I am guessing this is the year it gets splashed?

OK, got the porthole wrapped up!

Here are my two pieces of 1/4" and the frame...
P1090979.jpg

So I ran 3M Marine Silicone, installed the first piece, let cure, cleaned the glass, ran Silicone again, dropped in the 2nd piece, let cure, cleaned up, turned out like this...
P1090983.jpg

Compared to the original...
P1090919.jpg

I tried hard to keep things clean especially that inside glass, success!

I do like the nice new, clear glass inside that worn out vintage frame. Looks kinda coo:thumb:

Hey Jas, been awhile, not sure if the formula for 3m marine silicone is different, but silicone will cause the glass to haze up like a stain. this may only be for safety or laminated glass, but it does happen within a year. did it to several boats before while in the CG to a leak just under the windshield and side window. within 6 months the glass clouded up where the silicone was touching it and started spreading like a spider web.

Just food for thought. a glazing compound might be a better alternative. It also does it with plexiglass.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

we use silicone all the time to install glass in various places in homes, schools, tractors, and forklifts never seen any hazing from the silicone we use but we use a professional grade of silicone. Maybe some of the cheap stuff will do it. If your seeing "hazing" in Laminated glass its usually age that has deteriorated the plastic in between the the 2 sheets of glass.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so I thought I'd get after the maintenance on this kicker, 1989 Evinrude 15 HP Long Shaft...
P1090775_zpse3d1307f.jpg

(I love that stand by the way, makes working on it soooo easy!)

First up, last summer she had some trouble at the low end, you can kinda see it here when I first got it...

...and it became more obvious on the water. She just kinda wanted to stall out when I bumped into gear(back pressure). I took it over to a local retired OMC Tech fella. He found that there was a very small/thin/hairline crack in the top of my carb. I really don't think I would have caught it had he not pointed it out. So, he replaced/rebuilt the whole carb (this was last fall actualluy) and now that Evinrude runs great! I wanted to mention this as this crack issue for this size/vintage is apparently a semi common one.

That stuff was clearly outside of my skill set so I'm glad I had him work through it.

Now, water pump maintenance.

First up is removing the lower unit. Now because this is a long shaft I have just a couple of extra steps vs. a short shaft. You see here I have a total of 12 bolts that need to come out, 6 upper and 6 lower. The upper set for the Long Shaft extension needed to come out first...
P1100019.jpg

Once those 6 bolts are out the lower unit drops down. Putting it in forward gear dropped it low enough to expose this shift shaft coupler with two bolts...
P1100025.jpg

The upper bolt needs to come completely out, and off...

Next, the remaining 6 bolts come off to separate the extension...

Here's the water pump...

Four bolts off to remove the housing (you can see the pin there)...

I did find some some rubber junk in there, not good...

And here's the impeller side...

Pop the impeller out...
