Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So hook me up, how do I bypass? (If in fact I go down that road - I'm still a little nervous about the youngens messin with the switch.)
Jas, I spent 15 minutes trying to find a good picture of your outdrive in this encyclopedia thread of yours and gave up. The switch on my 1972 120 HP Mercruiser outdrive is/was a rubber covered button located at a point where the swingy part approaches the stationary part when the drive is raised. It had 2 very brittle and unrepairable (I tried) wires that extend through the transom to connect to your trim pump wires. When the drive is raised to contact the switch, normally closed contacts open to break the "up" signal from the helm. The trim switch console has three control buttons. One of the buttons is used to trim up while boating. This switch is the one in series with the limit switch to stop you from raising the outdrive too far while running. A second button will trim the drive "up and out" for trailering. This button is not in series with the limit switch, functionally bypassing it to allow a more extreme up position.
So, I'd look for those 2 wires, cut them just inside the transom and join the inboard ends of the wires securely together. Done. - Grandad

Ayuh,... Glad to hear yer youngin's are Well behaved,.....

Them's 1 of the things I never got 'round too, but I'm still cool with that life's choice..... ;)

I'll box mine up and ship em out to ya for a stretch! (your food budget will suffer big time!)

When the pump is over-run in it's travel, Down,.... the motor unloads, 'n Screams louder,...
No harm, just a free-wheelin' motor... the hyd.s are in by-pass...

When the pump is over-run in it's travel, Up,... it loads the motor, 'n ya hear it Labor....
It'll growl, 'n let ya know, the hyd.s are in by-pass, only against a Full load, against the check-valvin',...

If yer gonna leave the drive in the Up position at Anytime,...
When ya hear it Crowd out at Full up,...
Tap the down button a second or two, to Unload the hyd. check-valvin'...

It'll save havin' to pull the pump apart, or replacin' it, cause it won't go down....
That's the time ya need a LARGE Friend to jump up, 'n down on the drive, to free the valvin'....

Great info bondo, I love learning this stuff! Thanks for taking the time to post buddy! (especially with the one finger punch):encouragement:

Gdad, this thread is a monster, sorry man!

So, I'd look for those 2 wires, cut them just inside the transom and join the inboard ends of the wires securely together. Done. - Grandad

So basically, connect these two wires eh?

I think that was essentially what Bondo suggested too. Heck, easy!:thumb:

So what did I learn here today? Well in short, that trim limit switch (along with the sender) actually has little value in our boats eh? Cool, I can certainly live with that. Anytime I can simplify I'm all for it:joyous:

OK, so back to this issue here...

I really haven't been able to find a reasonable solution so far, unfortunately.

We had chewed on going with two 1/4" pieces of glass before so I stopped at the glass shop on the way home yesterday - 20 bux, grand total for both pieces, cheap!

So, I'm pretty sure I'll go that route. I think my only potential issue would be right at install. I'll need to be sure the inside faces are perfectly clean and be certain they are totally sealed up. Even with my dumness working against me, I think I can do it:redface-new:

Thursday guys, almost there:joyous:

20 for the glass. That's reasonable, Did you ask how much to install? If they break it, they fix it.

Yah, that was a super deal, happy about that! I think what I'll do is install one, let cure, clean, then install the second. I think I can be a little more careful vs. installing them both at the same time, eh.

Actually, I did ask them about install. They said "Heck, you can do just as good a job as we can."

Aw, shucks:love:

Then she said, "But if you (clearly) need assistance with your batt placement we are here to help!"

What!!! Where'd that come from!!!!:disgust::disgust:

Are you kidding? Jas? Miss an opportunity to use 3M 5200??? Really? I doubt it....

Love me some 5200! Though, I'll want something clear for this as I don't want to see a white ring around the glass, eh.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, so, I've been brewing about my ventilation some and was really kinda grumpy about using that basic white vinyl duct. Whenever I just pick it up, it kinda feels like it's going to disintegrate right in my hands. So first I looked at sawdust collection ducting, kinda spendy. Then I actually bought and hauled home schedule 30 PVC. Still kinda spendy once I included all the elbows n' stuff, really added up. Plus it was still a bit of a pain to fit. So, I returned all that.

Then I thought RV gear. Stopped by the local el WalMarto and grabbed up some RV Sewer Hose...

Peeeeerrrrrrrrfect!

Super beefy compared to that white vinyl stuff and at 20' for 7 bux it was basically the same price, cool!:thumb:

(Wow, pretty nerdy :nerd::nerd: getting excited over RV Sewer Hose huh?)

There's nothing like having a good sewer hose that works!

Cool idea with the hose! Have the same issue with mine, and have noticed the the decks are really rotted directly underneath the forward vents from water getting in. looks like the perfect fix!

Way to improvise with the hose J ! Now when it comes to the trim set-up I would suggest that if all the wiring is still good and the switch is funtional as well as the limit and sender to install it to Merc spec's (I/O stickies has a basic wiring diagram) just a closed loop system with a few switches.

That's a good point I never thought of... my starchief has those vents but it's an outboard model, I was fully planning on not installing tubes and using them just for a vent, and to cover up those big holes.
