It keeps snowing here, nobody gives us a snow day!
even when we had that rain that froze as soon as it hit the road

I think salt is super cheap here though...

Actually guys, funny thing about snow days (check post #1) and this Islander. See, I actually named her on the return trip from the junk yard that day. And that's all I'm going to say about that...

64: I was thinking 'Years ago' as in: if I knew then what I know now, I'd have done this.....

"Neither my 1st, nor my last?"

'Not 1st'

I prefer to wait, instead of looking back, but I'm sure it'll fit just perfect like the previous boat names did (do...)

You guys are silly, you'll never get it!

OK, continuing on with engine rigging. This morning I have a few questions and am hoping one of the Mercruiser pros are hanging around.

Question #1

I have this loose black wire coming out of the harness right up near (connected to) the breaker that doesn't seem to have a home. Any guesses to it's purpose or where it should go? I'm supposing it's a ground for something, eh?
P1090964.jpg

Question #2

I have this other loose wire at the very stern side of the engine just below the distributor. It looks white with blue stripe but I'm pretty sure it's just a faded tan/brown with blue stripe. Purpose? Home?
P1090965.jpg

Question #3

I'm working the trim connections here too. I connected up the TRIM SENDER wires though I'll not be running a trim gauge, so that's that I suppose.

So then I'm on to the TRIM LIMIT connections. My manual says to connect the "TRIM LIMIT SWITCH WIRE WITH BLUE SLEEVE AND WIRE WITH PURPLE SLEEVE"...
P1090968.jpg

(so far so good)

"TO BLUE/WHITE HARNESS WIRE AND PURPLE/WHITE HARNESS WIRE"...
P1090969.jpg

Ah, hmmm. Can any of you guys identify the purple/white and/or blue/white for me there ^^^^?? Am I dum?

Thanks in advance fellas!

(EDIT: I THINK I JUST FOUND THE ANSWER ON THE TRIM LIMIT WIRES = DOESN'T MATTER APPARENTLY, PLUG AND PLAY, COOL!)

(EDIT #2: LOOKS LIKE THAT TAN/BLUE WIRE IS THE ALARM FOR OIL PRESSURE AND/OR WATER TEMP. I'M SEEING THE CONTROL/CONSOLE SIDE OF THE NECESSARY CONNECTIONS IN THE MANUAL, BUT CAN'T SEEM TO FIND THE ENGINE SIDE CONNECTION LOCATION. HMMMM...)

Ayuh,... I just jumpered around the switch, as I don't use it...
After a short learnin' curve, you'll just know 'bout where the drive is, in it's stroke of travel...

The switch, 'n sender is, shall We say, Problematic anyways...

You may, or may not have the switches needed for the alarm system....

The Oil pressure alarm would be "T"ed in at the oil pressure sender...
The Water temp switch would be in or very near the T-stat housin'...

(edit) I see ya Don't have a wire on the oil pressure sender, that might be the gauge wire...
The sender is that bell shaped thingy to the southeast of yer fingers in the picture...
As a test, turn the key on, 'n ground out that wire,...
If it's the gauge sender wire, the gauge will peg, High...
If an alarm sounds, that's what it's for...
Don can answer these questions, Much Better than myself...

'n, yes, the black wire is most probably a Ground...

Btw,.... thanks for the call off from the photo shoot,...
I hate these outdoor shots in my string speedo, this time of year...

So wait, time out....

I recognize there is little value in the trim sender and gauge, so yah, I'm skipping that all together.

Now, so what yur sayen is skip the trim limit switch too? I was guessing that would prevent me from busting something I really didn't want to bust, eh? Wouldn't there be danger in trimming to far one way or the other? Edumicate me eh.

Yah, maybe not. This engine was kinda overhauled by pro marine tech type doods. That tan/blue stripe wire was sorta bundled (clearly on purpose) up back there - didn't really strike me as something an owner would do.

This stuff ^^^^ I'll need to work through down the road as I have nothing at the helm side side yet rigged. Thanks for the advice!

I can't help but think it was taken off on purpose. What do you spose it's for? I couldn't find that wiring schematic this morning but I'm sure it's somewhere in my manuals.

Ayuh,.... 'bout the only place you can Over trim it, into the tilt range is at the dock, or on the wagon...
Goin' across the pond, the prop will Blow Out, Long before ya get anywhere near to much driveline angle...

At the dock, or on the wagon, I just take the 2 steps aft, 'n Look at the drive... then adjust accordin'ly...

It's a Ground,... just piggy-back it onto the 1 next to it, in yer picture...
Ya Can't have to many ground paths...

Yah, I'm not really sweating while underway, and at the dock loading so much. I kinda have two fears, maybe realistic, maybe unrealistic:

#1 My switch sticking/breaking or something and the drive trimming to oblivion.

#2 One of my offspring exploring - "Daddy what does this switch do?" when I'm not looking or a just few steps too far away.

Ayuh,.... I put 1 of these on my steerin' column.... It's just a toggle switch, in a fancy housin'...

The switch shouldn't go Bad, unless it gets wet, often.....

As for the rug-rats messin' with it,...
think of it as an Educational moment.... ;)

'n,... The trim/ tilt will only go to the top, 'n crowd the pump,... Gotta believe you'd Hear the issue, happenin'....

Jas, you'll be OK as long as you don't work with children.
I'm with Bond-o on the trim limit switch. Mine was loused up, so I just bypassed it. The purpose on mine was to limit the height to which I can trim while running, presumably to save the universal from damage from running at an extreme angle. I still have the trim gauge, which I find some limited use for. As for knowing when to stop pushing the button, the only concern is how far up you go. On the water, as Bond-o says, you'll know it by the prop action. How far up when the engine's off if you're beached or on the trailer is controlled by your own hearing as to when the trim pump hydraulic system starts to struggle when full up. - Grandad

HA!! Educational for who? Them or me??? (As I'm shellin out $$$ for a new pump and rams:facepalm:)

Mine was loused up, so I just bypassed it.

So hook me up, how do I bypass? (If in fact I go down that road - I'm still a little nervous about the youngens messin with the switch.)

I'd totally go for it if my batts were hooked up. Where do you suppose I should place those batts anyway?

How about right here....

Ayuh,.... For the kid,... A quick Snap by Dad oughta learn 'em to leave Daddy-things ALONE....

If the switch is held in the down position, it'll eventually run the battery dead....

If held in the up position, it'll just happen sooner....

The Worst that could happen is the trim motor burnin' up from bein' run too long...

To by-pass it, just jumper the wires inside the transom together...

Yah, I gotta be fair to my little ones...

They are actually very respectful to stuff in general and have learned that certain things are just not to be touched. Without me even having to say so actually (for the most part). So that's pretty cool now that I think of it, well done Ken, Ry and E!:cool-new::cool-new:

Good to know that if it ever did get stuck trimming it wouldn't be a major disaster.

Thanks man!:thumb:

I don't think the chilluns playin' with the trim switch will be much of a problem. Most times they will be seated while the boat is under way and out of the way, unless you're trolling. Then they'll be busy pullin'in the big 'uns. And it's hard to miss the sound of the pump at slow speeds Now I/'m going back to when I had a M/C I/O and it's been a while.

Bond-o's turn signal trim control is the cat's PJs. Neato, Bond-o.

Ayuh,... Glad to hear yer youngin's are Well behaved,.....

Them's 1 of the things I never got 'round too, but I'm still cool with that life's choice..... ;)

When the pump is over-run in it's travel, Down,.... the motor unloads, 'n Screams louder,...
No harm, just a free-wheelin' motor... the hyd.s are in by-pass...

When the pump is over-run in it's travel, Up,... it loads the motor, 'n ya hear it Labor....
It'll growl, 'n let ya know, the hyd.s are in by-pass, only against a Full load, against the check-valvin',...

If yer gonna leave the drive in the Up position at Anytime,...
When ya hear it Crowd out at Full up,...
Tap the down button a second or two, to Unload the hyd. check-valvin'...

It'll save havin' to pull the pump apart, or replacin' it, cause it won't go down....
That's the time ya need a LARGE Friend to jump up, 'n down on the drive, to free the valvin'....
