Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thrilled to see you back on the Islander! I am really looking forward to seeing her float. Too bad about about not having the time to get her ready for Hilton Head. I've got family down there and have considered hauling my Chris Craft down if I can figure out the highway permit requirements.

I'm hunting a FF/GPS too and remain curious what you found and where you found it. Keep at it!!!

Hey man, great to see ya! Yah, hauling your CC down would be a pretty big undertaking eh? How about just going the long way round? You know Lk. Michigan over to Huron then on through the St. Lawrence Seaway, on to the Atlantic.... Fuel might be a bit spendy;)

Here's what I picked up, cheap on eBay!

It's not professional grade gear but it's the best I can do with my budget anyhow.

K, morning progress was just spent thinking on these bulkheads. I've pretty well ruled out mahogany ply, I'm just not into the dark tone.

I know a guy, who knows a guy, who has a buddy :spy: that can get teak at under 7 bux a board foot which is a super deal. Sadly, when I add up what I need it's really painful. I think I may try to price out black locust see how that comes out.

On the port hole glass, that $76 quote is actually as good as it gets so far. Most places can't even get it/make it. I have one more call to make today to see what I can come up with.

Have a great weekend guys!:joyous:

Hey Jason, had to go away on business for 4 days and now trying to play catch up. Real bummer on the glass and the fir. I bought some teak for the 201 and almost died when I saw the price. Really had to shop around cause the price is all over the place.

J sorry about the wood split but live and learn! Have you thought about compossites? I don't know a thing about $ on these but could be a long term solution and pretty maintenance free from what I here. And I like the vent scoops and I would also keep it as original as possible.

Find a vehicle in a junk yard with thick flat glass and take it out. Then take it to a glass shop and have them cut the circle out of the glass. Then bed the glass in yourself using whatever method you deem fit for the application.I have used the pop out windows from vans and urethane to bed the glass. Most U pull it yards don't charge much for those glass windows and they come out with a few bolts and screws. If you can find glass that is partially cracked, you can negotiate for an even lower price.Their are vids on youtube showing how to cut auto glass,if you're feeling adventurous.

Hi Jas, the porthole glass wasn't mirrored was it? On the placement of the scoops; when I replaced the stern deck on my Holiday project to avoid filling multiple holes, I relocated the scoops. If you do relocate the midship gunwale scoops, the step where the stern decking overlaps the gunwale is a good location as it tends to hide the step. This picture was taken during the reno, before adding Formica to the cabinets, also an option for your bulkheads and door. - Grandad

ok about junkyard glass the only glass that is in a vehicle that is cutable is the windshield it is laminated, the rest of the glass is tempered and not able to be cut unless you want it in 1 a million tint pieces. laminated glass is a form of safety glass it is actually 2 pieces of 1/8" glass glued together with plastic in between. Are you looking for safety glass?

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hey fellas, thanks for chipping in here, appreciated!

Hey, here's something else I'm thinking regarding the bulkheads. I should really put this info out there...

If I go with wood (I'd like to) I also want to match the swim platform I'll build. I think that pretty well puts me in the teak or mahogany category (46 total board feet = $$$). So ya, the bottom feeder in me is really starting to feel kinda quweezy:upset:

Now, on the porthole glass. I have pretty much struck out. Most places won't even deal with 1/2" and those that do can't make 5 7/8" circle. The fist place I went to @ 76 bux was as good as it gets so far. I guess I was thinking I ought to look into acrylic now maybe??? I need to stay with the 1/2" thickness because of the way the ring is built.

Well, even though I am spinning my wheels on those two items I did manage a small bit of progress on ventilation system. Yah fanny, I'll be going back to what was there originally.

Hey guys, have a good one!:joyous:

Look for a plastics place, TAP or others, they've got lots of cut offs & 1/2" from a cut off wouldn't be too expensive. You may need to cut to fit though............ Polycarbonite 1/2" X 9" X 9" is $14.63+/-...........

Some plastics come in a greenish tint that would mimic the distortion & tint/hue of the original glass, but I didn't see any at TAP.........

You'd have to fab the circle, but if you can figure out how to clamp it down, a good jigsaw blade could get it done....

there may be other choices available.........

If a 9X9 is $15, Ya might get a 12X12 and have more material to clamp it down for cutting, plus enough material to make 2 portholes, 1 now & another when it gets too scratched, or 1+ an oops :tinfoil3: :tinfoil3: :tinfoil3:

Yah, I've been thinking that ^^^.

Side note, McKenna, 8 year old daughter bear just caught the photo of your dog there in your sig, she says, high pitched girl voice...

Yup... that's why I went with what I did too..... add's up quickly! :eek I think I paid .80 cents a board foot for what I used in JII. Looks the same after leaving it out for close to 3 months in the water. Somethin to think about....

JAS!!!! Dude, you're back on the Islander???? I've been away for a bit and stoked to see you back giving her the love she deserves. It took me 2 weeks to catch up since Thanksgiving and worth every minute. As a sentimental dude I gotta say it sucks you can't make the old bleachers work but like you said, at least it happened before you finished her and had her out on the big lake pounding rollers.

love the progress and can't wait to see you get her ready for HHI.

Well, a little progress on the Islander, nothing extra special photo worthy.

I pulled out a couple of steering cables from my gear stash, 11 footer, way too short. 14 footer, soooo close! No matter which way I tweaked it I was still just a little short. Looks like I'll need to buy a 15 footer rats. Any of you guys need a steering cable I have two extra:rolleyes:

I got the Merc wire harness pinned up under the starboard gunwale.

I also heated my house with those bulkheads, right into the wood furnace...

It was nice to heat the house for the day but I'll be honest, I am pretty bummed about that material not working out.

Somethin to think about....

I really liked the tone of that wood and I think it would have made a real nice match to this Islander. The price was super bottom feeder friendly too. I've been stewing about what I'll use now. Teak at a super awesome price (that I still can't really afford so I'll need to wait and save up for it)? Or maybe something else (domestic lumber maybe) more reasonable $$$. I dunno, we'll see.

Teak would be sweet in that boat! You got some time to find the coin. You seem to always come up with a stash when you put your mind to it....

I don't know how much you need or where the $ for veneer exceeds what you can get the real deal for, but this teak veneer came up as best offer @ 4X8 sheets prepped for contact cement use (paper backed).

You seem to have a knack for knocking the Or Best Offer deals outta the park...

Just for a lark, I looked up that link to see what delivery costs for that veneer would be. The default location says United States for which delivery costs $20. When I changed the location to my postal code, an hour from Toronto, Canada's largest city, the delivery charge jumped to $229.33. You Yanks don't know how good you've got it. It seems suppliers think Canuckistan is not worth shipping product to. Gheesh. - Grandad

Jas, with all that standing timber around you don't you know someone with a portable sawmill you could cut some hardwood from around you and mill down for your project? That would be bottom feeder friendly and a cool story to boot.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah, I hear ya guys.

DJ - I agree, teak would look real nice I think. And ya, selling stuff to fund other stuff is something I do pretty well with. I was taking a quick inventory of the remaining gear here, I have a fair amount. But, most everything will be needed to fund the new SEI drive come spring, ya know.

JB - Every once in a while I go "Wough! He took my offer!"

Gdad - Bah, kanucks!

Craig - Yah, I like your thinking. Really the decision is two part for me. 1) Nearly everything on the Islander so far has been a super deal, scrounge, scrape, eBay, craigslist sort of thing. I still want a nice boat in the end so it's a balance of spending $$ where I need to and be creative where ever I can. I have a number of trees that would make good candidates for boat builden. I know a fella who owns a sawmill too. Something interesting to build with is way mor fun than what I might buy a the Home Depot eh! 2) Any wood I use will be sealed up with epoxy and varnish. All right so, is teak an absolute (especially for the swim platform)? Well, if it's totally sealed up, super well, including fasteners, I could probably build that stuff out of OSB if I wanted to...

chesapeake-trip-11-0111.jpg

...though I'm thinking something a little sturdier than OSB (as pretty as she ^^^^ is).

Anyway, just thinking out loud is all:joyous:

I hope the "Miss OSB" in that picture does not stand for Miss "Oriented Strand Board". That is one nice looking woody.
