Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I'll check with a couple other local glass shops to see what they can do. If the 1/2" is too spendy I can go with 1/4" or plastic or something. We'll see...

Sucks about the glass price & the wood.

Good news is you're getting a Cabelas!

Save the wood for a project around the house,......

Seems to me yous had trouble with it before in a boat,..

Plywood wrapped with vinyl sounds like a good, easy, quick idea,....

Bummer... I know you worked really hard on that (you even made us some biscuits - yummy), and wanted to use that material for sentimental reasons..... However, this is the second time it split on you (sea nymph dash), so maybe its just not meant to be...

On a different note... Anyone else notice the superman mug while he is explaining the superhuman strength of his thumbs? I think he's trying to tell us something....

:ban: Yup Ban it. Tis no good for what you be doin man! Sucks. Too dry. But as you said from a positive note... you didn't install it and have it go POP!

May I suggest some wood from :canada:? Time for a good strong coffee and a cookie!

Jas, feel your pain dude. I'm sure the wheels are spinning like mad right now. You will figure this out and move on. Like you said better now than after everything is put together. Kryptonite = Bleacher Wood

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah, rats guys! I did put a bunch of work to get to this point but man, if that would have happened out on the water, after this boat had been completed, oooooo budy, I would have been one cranky captain. Once she's done, I'm really wanting to run her, definitely NOT redo/rebuild stuff!

So, yah, thankful I learned my lesson and took the hit at this point. It's all good:joyous:

Yup lokonn, weelz are spinning now. I'd like to go with teak and can get a pretty good deal on it (like 1/2). But even at the "good deal" price it's sooooo far out of my budget.

Mahogany plywood is another option ($$ wise not too bad) but, I'm not particularly fond of the dark tone of the wood for this boat. I like the idea of the lighter teak ya know.

Bah, we'll see what I can come up with.:nonchalance:

You could stop in to siding world and pick out some aluminium soffit panels, and rivet those to some aluminum frameing.

Just brain storming:behindsofa:

Hey Jes ,have you thought about cypress or parana pine ? Both of these woods are tight grain and light in color and eather can take a stain if need be ,I have used the cypress for stringers in a boat and the parina pine works very good in cabnets with out any warp.Just thinking

Yah hey that's not a bad!

Orrrrrr....

I could slap on some "peanut butter" mixed with Chopped Strand Matthew, maybe wrap the whole boat in 14 oz. clothitch slathered in polypuke? Eh! Whadyouya think! Great idea eh! Where's my nuclear fallout suit?

Kinda sounds exotic, and in turn a little spendy eh?

Aw Dood! Did you break a mirror or spill some salt over the weekend? I'm with you on the wood breaking now. You would have been seriously peeved if it broke while pounding the waves. Other than ply, I got nuttin'.

Bummer on the bleacher wood, hard to believe it just split like that.

You might end up with material that is less maintenance though, and definitely a good thing to discover sooner rather than later.

Glad to see the Islander getting some attention, I still need to get caught up on your progress:D

Nooooooo, doubt GA! You know the other thing I was thinking about this morning: I'm thankful I've already backed off on the Easter Break deadline for this boat. That would have been a huge blow to my timeline!

I really do enjoy these boat build projects, good stuff. But, once I am done with this Islander, I seriously want it to be a big time fishing and family fun "project".:eek:nthego:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

All right, so, I kinda stayed away from thinking about my cabin bulkheads and went back to rigging this morning.

Many moons ago I scored 4 scoops for cheap off eBay. Dug those out - nice stainless steel. They're used but in awesome shape, just need a little bit of cleaning...

I really like the design, I think they should match the boat nicely:joyous:

Way better than my originals...

A while back I installed a piece of ply under the stern deck there in an effort to beef it up. So this morning I cut the holes and just did a quick dry fit...

You can see I dug out a blower compliments of Thumper:becky:

Don't know if it can be done, but my Thompson has the vents for the blower on the side of the boat. SOOO much nicer for not getting the net, line, lures...etc caught up.

Yah maddie, I was actually stewing on that a bunch this morning. See, I have two holes at the stern (originally exhaust) there and two way up ad midships (originally intake). I'm trying to think if I want to go back to that original configuration or run something different.

Going original means I can use up all four of the giant holes in the gunwales/stern which is good. But, that also means a long run of venting to rig, almost 40' total for just the intake (20' each side).

Another option is to have all 4 vents at the stern. That would make for short vent runs which is good. But, then I have two more holes to cut and two big holes at midships to fill somehow.

A third option is to just have two scoops at the stern. One intake and one for exhaust. The two big holes at midships I could still drop scoops in. But what I could do is have those vent the cabin actually (you know, hot days, fresh air sort of deal).

Anyhow, options, we'll see...

Sorry to hear about your setback but that's what us DIY'ers have to live with! Glad to hear you have decided not to try making the Easter Break deadline with this boat. The salty stuff down this way has plenty of other challenges without the extra hurdles of a rebuild/restoration project AND towing that beauty down here and back. Save your gas money and rent something at HH and see if you like marshes, mudflats, sandbars and a seven-foot tidal range. I love it but I was born and raised with it. Good luck!
