well from an experienced glass man buffing sucks not the best way to remove scratches from glass replacement is the way to go for a clear view. if you want a frosted look take it to the sand blaster that is one way to etch glass and probably cheapest. glass is cheap

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

All righty, so this morning I pulled all the clamps and I now have two bulkheads and a door ready for the big drum sander...
P1090920.jpg

I made these tall so when I chop them to size I'll have big enough sections left over to also build my console. That'll save me some time down the road, eh.

Well, then, I kinda started working on that porthole just for fun. I started scraping out that adhesive and got the idea that I could actually pop that glass out to make the job a little easier. Um, I put just a bit too much on it and...

Whooops!!

So yah, extreme had the right idea there, replacement, yah, lets go with that:eagerness:

I was totally wrong earlier when I said it was stainless. It's actually chromed brass, dunno how I missed that. Anyhow, I got out the wire wheel to dig out all the leftover adhesive. After that I just hit the whole thing with a red metal sanding pad followed up with 000 steel wool to clean it up some...

I kinda like it in it's "weathered" state so I'm going to leave it as it is. I think with a brand new piece of glass in there it should look cool eh. Besides, I really don't feel all that great about throwing coin at a re chrome job. I'll just lay on a coat of SharkHide and run with it.

Cheers:peace:

to replace the glass is easy just find a glass shop that caries 1/4" plate glass they should be able to cut you a new piece in 10 minutes. take the frame into the glass shop then they can fit it to the frame. Same goes for that clock Gibbles but that uses 1/8" glass or also known as DS glass

Lookin good man! The ring really came out nice! Ya... I like the new glass idea as well... and at this point unless you're going for the "no glass" look... it seams that's the way to go! Rollin rollin rollin!!! :)

Yah guys, no biggie on the glass. I may (or may not) have had a rubber mallett in my hand and may (or may not) have been taking whacks at the glass to pop it out. So, well, I get what I deserve (maybe/maybe not).:bounce:

I'll stop at the glass shop on my way home to see what they can do. Hope it won't be too $$$$.

You will like Cabelas... Even though the mounts are fake, they are cool to look at... pretty fair marine section... really good fishing section...

A lot of eye candy for the kids in terms of aquariums with local fish species, etc... A good way to kill an hour or two when you have daddy duty...

Jen is gonna have that Cabela's on speed dial. I can hear it now. "Will Mr. Outside please come to Customer Service for a phone call."

Hope the new glass isn't too much cheddar.

Too right! We've been down to the World Headquarters in Dundee. Since I'm full on bottom feeder I'll just be after the clearance stuff and hanging with the kiddos eh:joyous:

It doesn't have to be 1" thick, does it? Can you replace it with 1/8" Lexan or similar?

Yah, I hear ya. It's 1/2" but I'd like to stay with that original thickness if I can help it. That fat glass kinda makes it unique ya know.

Ouch. That glass shop isn't bottom feeder friendly.

Look for a plastics place, TAP or others, they've got lots of cut offs & 1/2" from a cut off wouldn't be too expensive. You may need to cut to fit though............ Polycarbonite 1/2" X 9" X 9" is $14.63+/-...........

Some plastics come in a greenish tint that would mimic the distortion & tint/hue of the original glass, but I didn't see any at TAP.........

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I'll check with a couple other local glass shops to see what they can do. If the 1/2" is too spendy I can go with 1/4" or plastic or something. We'll see...
