Looking real good Jason. That fir is going to make a real nice looking cabin door, good explanation on the biscuit joiner. I have a real cheap one and it is real hard to get good results with it but it does work. Keep going like this and you are going to beat me to the water with the Islander.

Nice job, should change your name to Norm (New Yankee work shop). I always love to watch wood working just never got good at it myself. Mechanical things such as car and boat engines seem more my thing. So let me knows if you need advice on the merc.

I too recently saw a 19 ft and a 22 ft islander on clist and thought of this thread. Not to many aluminum boats hear on the coast of NJ.

When Pearl Jam and Nirvana ruled .

If your a Pearl Jam and Nirvana fan check out "Mother Love Bone",...

I had never heard of them and stumbled on it accidentally,....

They had a record deal and album but the lead singer died a couple months before it's release,....His band and some friends put out a tribute album called "Temple of the Dog",.....You might have heard of it,..

The rest of Mother Love Bone went on to become Pearl Jam,....Soundgarden was the other group of friends involved in Temple of the Dog,...

Back to boats,.....

I dunno man, when I think about all the tasks yet to complete on this project, ugh. I still have a loooooonnnngggg way to go.

I enjoy working with wood but boy do I wish I had more depth of knowledge when it comes to mechanics. Rats!

Good stuff!

You have a big planer at school you could run that glued up plank through? My High School had an awesome "shop" program back in the day. Seeing you glue all those planks together brings back memories....

A 24-36" wide surfacing sander would be even better :), some cabinet & woodworking shops will run material thru 1, for a fee...

Using the vertical grain fir will make for a great panel, that resists cupping really well.

It's been a good long while, but with humidity changes, does vertical grain fir expand across it's width or from flat face to flat face (thru the 1 1/16" thickness)?

Hey fellas, yah, I think I'll bring it into school. Our planner isn't wide enough but they should just fit through the big drum sander. That should save me a whole bunch time that I would have otherwise spent on my belt sander.

JB, if these move they should expand the width I suppose.

Maybe a little too soon to be thinking about this kind of finishing gear but...

Check it out, Port Hole eBay score....
P1090919.jpg

I think I snatched that up for like 15 bux, sweet! Super beefy, simple, nothing fancy, I really like it!:thumb:

This is going to be installed on my cabin door. I think it should look pretty cool with the stainless up against the varnished fir.

But, as you can see, the glass is really scratched up. What do I do with it? Should I make it a "frosted" sorta look? Can I bring it back to clear again?

Jas, totally cool porthole. I don't have any idea about how to polish the glass. But if you can give it a frosted look, you can sure polish the glass too. Whatever happens, it is perfect for the cabin door.

I think I would try one of those headlight buffing kits and see if that did the trick,....

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

This has been suggested to be the same hardness as glass, and mixed into a slurry, and buff out the haze & most of the smaller imperfections.

Google Cerium Oxide, it's available in smaller volumes & specific glass polishing pads...

I think most headlight polishing kits are formulated for the multiple types of plastic they're typically made of, lexan, acrylic etc. Paste toothpaste can be used for that, on glass, probably won't hurt to try either...

Finding just the right sandpaper to 'evenly' frost the glass may be a challenge, but if frosted is the look you're going for, might try a craft glass etching paste.

Seems Teamster is finding similar info............

There's a chemical that will etch glass easy in a few mins, my bud used to own a trophy shop and they did the personalized glasses and stuff too. Don't remember what it was called but he would cut vinyl with the letters he wanted reversed out and paint this stuff on there, then a few mins later rinse it off and remove the vinyl. That would be a cool way to personalize the port hole.

Jas, I think the first thing I would try would be some buffing compound on a rag or some 0000 steel wool and see if they make any difference. If they do then you may be able to bring it back with a small buffer and compound or some elbow grease. The kits sound like a good idea but knowing your bottom feeder tendancies.....good luck either way.
