Re: 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Jas, is there a reason that you showed the upper bezel plate with the wide part at the top? If the plate is just as sweet on the reverse, why not flip it top to bottom so that the width of both bezels is similar where they align. Also, I'm thinking that the slope on the right side of the upper bezel would look better sloped the other way. - Grandad

Hmmmmmmmmm, you studied that Gdad! Thanks man!

Yes there was a reason. It was legit and purposeful. I totally forgot what that reason was now though:rolleyes:

I'll take a closer look at it and make up a new reason. If not, I'll flip it:victorious:

Hey Jas -- haven't swung through in a bit. Nice to see the old girl well on her way again with the usual terrific pics and vids.

Just a note on your fuel system install. I think USCG standard is two clamps per connectdion -- at least on tank fill lines but I do it on any connection. Also, make sure none of that hose is chafing on sharp edges and whatnot back there. Maybe wrap another layer of hose in areas that might come in contact with structure. Build on!

Wasup scout! Yah, I was careful with sharp edges so I'm good there. I've doubled up on clamps at the tanks, below deck. On the supply lines I just put one on but I can easily add two, no sweat.;)

I think that looks better. It makes the 2 individual plates more uniform in design, like they belong together. - Grandad

Man, I feel like such a hack compared to you guys... I would have never noticed what G-dad pointed out... All I saw was mouse ears...

FWIW, I think G-dad is right. While I didn't even notice at first, I agree its looks better now that he has pointed it out.

Yah, I hear ya fellas, I think it should look pretty sharp some day. I was kinda doing some rough mock ups with that stuff this morning and I'm looking forward to getting to that part of the build:D

I updated and made just a couple of changes...

Jerry, how the heck are ya man!

Yah, she's getting there. I put some more time into milling out the wood for the cabin bulkheads this morning. Slow - steady ya know.

That Islander looks pretty good, I do believe you need a new project buddy:madgrin:

Things have been pretty good, too busy to do much boating. Got engaged....

I do need a new project, but I just might have one lined up... Another big glass beast... I'll keep you updated. :)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Allrighty, so this morning I thought I'd go about the business of joining up some boards. I took a bunch of photos just in case any of you guys out there have an interest on how I put em together.

So here's what I'm working with...
P1090898.jpg

If you are just jumping into this thread here's the scoop on these boards. This is bleacher wood, quarter sawn, douglas fir, that lived in the main gym of the High School I graduated from, back in the mid 90's (and oddly enough now work).

When Pearl Jam and Nirvana ruled I was causing all sorts of ruckus on that very wood. The district replaced all the bleachers so I grabbed up a trailer load for building stuff. So yah, there's kind of some nostalgia with this material, like it, very cool!

So, my method for joining is with a Biscuit Joiner...
P1090899.jpg

The correct term is Plate Joiner but I like to use Biscuit as it reminds me of one of my favorite ways to start the day...
http://www.inlander.com/spokane/imgs/hed/art16144widea.jpg

Healthy? Ah, no. Yummy? Yes!

So the Biscuit Joiner has all sort of adjustments on it to work with the given material...
P1090900.jpg

And the way it works is the head is spring loaded and there is a cutter that plunges into the wood making a slot...
P1090902.jpg

The slot takes a biscuit. They come in a few sizes...
P1090901.jpg

The material I'm working with is 1 1/16" thick by 3 3/4" wide so I'm going with the big 2/0 size biscuits.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

So the first thing I do is lay out the boards. It's kind of a puzzle to get just the right boards match up and looking good. Then, clamp em up and mark where each of the slots will be cut...
P1090903.jpg

Line up the joiner and plunge in the cutter head...
P1090904.jpg

From there, glue on all the surfaces and tap in the biscuits (TightBond III)...
P1090905.jpg

Then line everything up and tap the two pieces together...
P1090906.jpg

Once all the boards are fit, clamp it everything together looking for good squeeze out (a real carpenter would be using Bessy clamps there but I'm poor)...
P1090907.jpg

Okeedokee, there's the soon to be cabin door for the Islander getting glued up. Still need to trim, shape, sand, seal, but it's a start anyway.

Cheers!:friendly_wink:
