Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Ok, so I attempted to work on those gunwales tonight. I kinda had forward motion. I ended up clamping them in place, making sure that I was happy, then laid out some bend lines. I then attempted to bend them. Screwed them down to a straight edge 2x and sort of started to tap them with a rubber mallet to make the bend. I quickly figured out that this wasn't going to work, or, at least it wasn't going to be pretty. So I scraped that idea. I started to work another plan and ended up being daddy on duty as my middle one ended up with fist full of sand right in the eyes from his older sis. I really felt for the guy, but, he took it like a champ!

I also spent some time being enabled and bullied by an unruly gang on this forum. I think I liked it though. That is all I am going to say about that right now.

Sorry about that, I did take a couple but they weren't all that special and the sand in my boys eyes shut down operations for the night. I know exactly how I will attack these gunwales now (at least I think I do) so I'll snap away.

Cheers!

OK, had some good progress this afternoon - perfect day to work on the rig!

After scrapping my old idea on how to put the gunwales together here is the direction I went...

I took the inner gunwales and clamped them down to the bench on my deck...

...and then cut them in half with the SawZall and removed the small trim angle.
P1010695.jpg

Basically I ended up with 6 separate peices...

...and before I forgot I removed this and put it in a safe place.

Then I took the medium sized piece and did a quick dry fit...

...this would be a "before" shot.

I then ran a bead of 5200 for additional strength and rigidity...

...and clamped it back in place, pulled out this fella. Picked it up from Home Depot with one of my Birthday Gift Cards. Thanks Mom!

Drilled and riveted every 6 inches with 3/16 rivets and did the same thing on the starboard side...

I am really happy how this part turned out. This piece will actually never be seen but it will serve several purposes.

1. It will provide some structure for the gunwale.

2. It will be used as a backer to attach this piece...

3. It will also be used to attach the inner curtain (epoxied ply with pleated vinyl).

So from here I'll be hooking on the piece pictured above, attaching the aluminum trim piece that will go between the gunwale deck and curtain. At some point I'll also add epoxied ply under the gunwale to give a bomber base for downriggers and rod holders.

Cheers dudes!

Hey Jas, I just spent about 3 hours reading through your thread to get all caught up with where you are at

...is it too late to vote for #5 :p

...and those big wooden stringers, WOW! I don't have those in my 18 Chief. Were they in the back for the I/O or ???

...I love your "engine stand" ;)

And lastly, I don't think I'm too far behind you. I haven't started my rebuild thread (even though I'm done gutting and starting to strip paint), but I'm thinking this week-end I'll have to put it together so we can track each others progress :D

First one to splash wins :p

I don't think you need the nudge, but I sure do! ;)

Looking forward to comparing notes and progress!

Cheers!

Man, I can't believe you read the whole thing! Thanks for sticking with it!

Hummm, another #5, yah you guys definitely see something I don't, eh!

Yah, those stringers were for the old OMC. That was a heck of a job persuading them to come out!

Yup, gotta that the folks at Baja for the "engine stand", though, I don't suppose that is what they had in mind when they put that together.

OK, so you just bought your rig and you aren't that far behind me! Well rats! I am thinking you don't have little ones running around your homestead, huh??

First one to splash, shoot lets make it easy! Uncle, white flag, I give, mercy, I concede, you win! What do I owe ya?

Huron thinks I can get this tub done this year. I'd love it but I'd need to get some solid progress and things would have to go really right for me which rarely happens in my world!

Thanks for stopping by, I'm watching your progress closely!

Rock on!

Thanks bro!

Well, to be fair, I ran the blade right in the crease of that piece so that made it quite a bit easier to keep things straight.

Hey buddy, look like you have some sweet weather to get some major work done on your rig today Have at it, eh!

Cheers buddy!

So I just went back and look at your photos. I am betting that you have flotation, fuel tanks, both, or maybe even nothing under that pyramid deal. Maybe the previous owner just built that as a fishing platform. Any way you shake it I am sure you can build in some storage up there which would be great!

LOL Don't worry J...if you can get the rig on the water we'll make sure you catch some fish too:D

Between Don, Broadcast, HSF and myself we will make sure you get properly rigged with downriggers or planer boards to catch some big fish;)

Course you can always drop some worms and catch some Saginaw Bay perch right?

Shoot, CheapBoatKev could probably walk you thru how to add a tuna tower and chase some really big fish(if you could trailer your boat out to Cali that is).:D

Yah, that old saying...

10% of the fisherman catch 90% of the fish

...I'd be in the OTHER 90% of the fisherman out there.

Truth be told. I can usually put a couple in the box, just enough for a fresh fish dinner for the family. Yah buddy that is good stuff right there! OOooo, I'm hungry!

I just checked out Broadcast's fish photos, HE KNOWS HIS GAME, EH!
