I wonder why my Gross weight is 850# more than yours? Mine says 2850 pounds. Your placard is in excellent shape. I can't make out what my max engine and fuel weight is on mine.

Good question????

Yah, I think with a little light cleaning it should look pretty good!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Well, I stayed home today as I have two of the three pretty sick. I laid them down and they slept for about two and a half hours. I figured I may as well work on the rig a little so here is what I got done...

Before shot...
P1010722.jpg

Clamped up a trimmed piece of the old gunwale...
P1010723.jpg

Drilled, riveted, and trimmed the inside...
P1010725.jpg

And the outside...
P1010726.jpg

And the top with a flattened out piece of scrap angle aluminum...
P1010727.jpg

And then repeated the same process on the starboard side. It feels very solid so far, I am sure it will be bomber once I mount the trim, curtain and ply underneath.

I know this is against what the overwhelming majority of you fellas were looking for but I hope it will grow on ya...

I am happy with it! Should be quite functional for fishing and ski/tube action!

Here is Jack supervising all operations...

And here is why I am so excited that this rig actually fits in the garage (think paint/gluvit)...

That stuff just rains down from all my maple trees this time of year. The helicopters are soon to follow.

Nice:) It looks like you've created a custom "walk-around Islander" like many great lakes boats(google trophy and seaswirl walk-around). Nice for heading up to the bow to drop anchor rather than having to pop up out of that hatch.

Boy your dog sure trusts the structural integrity of that trailer;)

I don't like working under my trailer for longer than a few seconds in case something decides to let go:eek:

Looking good! I like the solution you came up with for the edge on the gunwales. After the huge burrito I just ate and all of last nights sanding, I feel like your dog has the right idea... nice little siesta in the shade!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yah, it's a dog's life I tell ya. Some days I'd love to just lay in the shade of a big boat and take a nap!

So I did end up having a little more time this afternoon to work on the rig. So here the vision of how to make these gunwales come together starts to really take some shape.

So here is the new and improved gunwale...
P1010731.jpg

I laid out a bend line...
P1010732.jpg

Then I laid out a parallel line that gave me just enough room for my tool to make the bend, the rest gets trimmed off...
P1010733.jpg

And make the trim...
P1010734.jpg

Then I made the bend all the way up...
P1010735.jpg

Including the helm area...
P1010736.jpg

And then the same process over on the other side!

So here is my thought on trimming it out purdy...
P1010738.jpg

P1010737.jpg

This would be the old trim that I took off. I really hope that I can get these shined up and looking good like some of you guys have done to your aluminum!

Rather than having it sit how it was originally (about an inch higher that the actual gunwale) I'll seat in down lower so it is just about flush with the gunwale.

I'll need to to do two "relief" cuts in order for it to bend back and forth through the taper that I have fabbed up there. I think if I am very careful and go easy, I can pull it off.

Total out of pocket costs for this gunwale fab type work $0.00! Love it!!!!

Pretty good day today all in all, good forward motion I suppose.

The way this is shaping up it sort of has this cool taper effect going towards the helm. Well at least I think it's kinda cool, it may be garbage.

Cheers Fellas!

Great work Jas, gonna be sweet lookin & easy in & out for sure...well done!

I hear ya on the helicopter thingys and bud droppings, did my gluvit today and it stays outside...figure the stuff that sticks may cut down on how much foam I need LOL

Cool to see you get time to work on her, with all that's on your plate.

Sweet. The alum work turned out great. In the end the piece that you didn't trim will add more protection from the elements so it was probably the way to go.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for stopping by and the encouragement guys! I keep trying to envision this rig all sanded, primed, painted and spit shined up. It hope I can work to it's potential.

Ok, so I am thinking that my next couple of steps would be to install that trim on the gunwales then turn my attention to building the transom boards and cleaning/prepping/sealing the transom skin.

The elephant is eaten one bite at a time, eh!:D

Thanks Snow!

Yup cc, pretty sure you should go get one.

Not much to report from yesterday. I did swing by the Depot as I was running low on some stuff. I picked up another couple of boxes of rivets, a couple of tubes of PL, wire wheels/flappers.

I did stand and stare at the rig for a little bit going through some things in my head. Trim work, seating, plumbing, side curtains, live well, flotation...

Still have a long way to go, but it's all good!

I think today is mainly going to be a family day but I might be able to get a few minutes on it.

Cheers!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I was pretty sure that winter had let up, but wouldn't ya know it, a few flakes of snow came down at my place today, sheesh!

Anyway, I threw on the insulated Carhartt bibs and the heavy hooded sweatshirt and found my self in the rig for a little bit today.

I needed to finish up the backer aluminum along the stern so I added some angle...
P1010764.jpg

then took an old piece of the gunwale I chopped off and attached it...
P1010765.jpg

used a bead of PL and rivets every 6 inches...
P1010766.jpg

then trimmed off the angle...
P1010767.jpg

Again, none of this will really be seen but will serve as backer for epoxied ply and pleated vinyl. I'll be adding quite a bit more structure and support to this stern deck down the line to make it super beefy, but it was good to get it pinned in place.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

I also had a little time to work on the aluminum trim for a bit.

I thought I'd try to just bend it into place rather than make relief cuts. IT WORKED!!!

I just sort of clamped it in place (close anyway) and then applied a little heat with the Burnzomatic with one hand and real gently bent with the other.

Check it out...
P1010760.jpg

P1010761.jpg

Same process on the other side.

I am pretty darn excited how that turned out!

I then cut away one of the sides that make the groove on the bottom of the trim. I did that in an effort to get it tight up against the aluminum with as little play as possible.

Before...

After...

Have a great Saturday guys!
