Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Okay I'll give you that one, I guess it's a good thing you didn't buy the SEI right away then, as I'm sure you wouldn't want to waist the three year warranty sitting in DRY DOCK :D:D

Oh man, another kick right in the junk:eek:

Ugh!

Actually, I was just thinking about that this morning. I was almost ready to pull the trigger on one. I would have wasted ONE YEAR of that warranty (punk).

Glad I didn't yet grab it:)

Yah man, if I could finish I'd be happy. I need about 15 maybe eve 20 lbs. off this fat carcass to feel good about it:rolleyes:

So this morning I worked on the Gimbal Housing some more. It was a little frustrating and I wrestled with it for just about two hours. See, I free handed the bolt/mounting holes instead of using a drilling jig to keep my drill perfectly straight. So, a couple of holes were just barely a little tight.

I ended up pulling the whole transom assembly on and off two more times in an effort to get things all lined up. Definitely a two man job! (Too bad it was just me, rats.)

I was just about to give up, pull it off again, and re drill a couple of holes - I gave it one more effort and got it, no extra drilling! Whew:)

Here is the whole assembly, it looks just like the photo up a ways only this one has seven more bolts in it:D

I didn't crank it all the way down yet. I wanted to go through the manual one more time and stare at it for a little while just to make sure I didn't miss anything before I lock it down for ever and ever, amen.

I know it doesn't seem like much but that felt like a great big victory right there ^^^^^:D

The whole rest of the driveline is based on what I do here so I really want to make sure it's right. Ya know:)

Jason, I know this is going back a ways on your rebuild, but I am almost to this stage on the 201 and I can't find a lot of info in the manual on the install of the transom assembly. I see you used bellows addesive to hold that miserable gasket in housing. My question is did you use any sealer on the transom side of the gasket?

Hey my Kanuck broham, I like talkin bout boats, so lets go back eh! I wish I were at your place so we could check it out first hand, but I spose the interweb universe will have to do:)

OK, first, that bellows adhesive is a MUST HAVE for that round gasket! Makes it such a piece of cake getting it to stay where it need to.

Now...

did you use any sealer on the transom side of the gasket?

I just want to be clear - you mean between the gasket/housing and the outer transom skin?

If ya do, yup I used adhesive. Check #3335 and see if that makes some sense...

I just put a small bead in between, all the way around, and then wiped it smooth with Mineral Spirits so it looks nice/finished. I use the big calk style cartridges in the gun which makes it easier to run the bead.

Hope that helps...

Cheers my friend:D

Morning Jason, ya it would be real cool to sit around with a pot o coffee debate the finer side of SC rebuilding. Okay I checked out #3335 and from what I see and read you didn't put the 4200 on the gasket you ran a bead around after the install, correct?

Agreed;)

Thatsright...

you ran a bead around after the install, correct?

Actually, not quite...

I got everything lined up, in place, nuts/bolts started. With a very small gap left between the housing and transom skin I "claked" in the adhesive. Then I jumped in the boat, locked everything down which squeezed the excess adhesive out, and I wiped her clean/smooth.

:)

Thanks Jason, it takes some of us Kanucks a while to catch a drift in a snow storm , If you know what I mean.

Put to rest for the summer?
I was hoping for some splash pics! But you have other boats, so no use rushing things.

Yah, I was just thinking this morning that I am glad I'm not rushing things on this Islander. There are a few parts of the finishing stuff that I really would rather take my time on and try to do well.

Me too...I took a lot of time :) Though almost done enough for now. Hopefully I'll splash this week if the weather clears up.

No updates in quite some time. Either I really need to check the Sea Nymph thread or your rebuild is on the same timeline as mine!

He's just paused on the Islander waiting for me to finish mine.

Hi Jason! Hope you're having a nice summer! I finally got a job so maybe I'll still be able to do something to mine before the snow flies.

I think some of the vintage tin SC's we rehab around these parts are like dogs you adopt from the pound. Sure, they've got some problems, maybe a flea or 2. Possibly a tad rotten around the edges (or thru & thru), and perhabs a skin rash in a few, hard to deal with, places. But man, they're loyal to a fault after some care, patience, hard work & some long overdue attention.

Once assimilated into the family, you can't imagine not having them around. Even beat down, knocked around, and occasionally still gruff/rough, but dependable & ready whenever you are for a quick trip to the water

Insert cameos from Ole' Yeller & Lassie. And in my case, a healthy dose of Scooby Do........

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

My first iboats post ever what should I say.....

doood seriously no splash yet!!!

Jas I've enjoyed all 165 pages (and counting) of this odyssey even if it took me a solid week to get through it. (Can't read at work as for some reason the FMCSA frowns on drivers who do that.) Now of course I'm stuck waiting on you to get back to it like every one else but hey that should leave me some more time to get to work on my old boat. Thanks again for some great reading.
