I couldn't help but laugh at the camera tipping over. Now we know why you have some many problems with your electronics

Yah, there may be a correlation there huh?

Great work there Jas. It looks good sitting in there.

Thanks man, I was kinda envisioning the dog house build - should be cool:cool:

Good vids.I scribed to your channel on utube.

Thanks for tagging along Ben!

It's good to see a powerplant almost in place.

Yah GA, getting it in place is totally awesome - though I know I have a long way to go for the mount and rigging that follows. Just need to keep the blades turning ya know :)

Looks really big and meaty in there... right at home! A lot of slugging/hard work there man.. definetely a winning day One small step in the project, one giant leap for Jas!!!

Agreed! Thanks IM!

Great work Jason... Love how you have mastered the art of doing two person jobs by yourself...

Thanks mccraney! Yah, every once in a while I have somebody help me with stuff and I'm totally lost, kind of all thumbs. And, things go so much faster too!

Love your vids JAS, I'm a fellow Michigander lookin to come aboard and learn.

Hey Craig! Great to hear from ya and glad you stopped by, welcome!:D

Hey Jason, great job on the motor install. It is amazing what we can do by ourselves when we have to. Calling the wife out to help is just not an option at 3AM
Glen

Ah ya, calling the wife out in the wee hours of the day - she may come out to "help" with a Ronco Slicer and Dicer:eek:

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Just yakkin about my stringer risers here, nothin special...

Just a side note...

How cool is it that I really only need to do some minor fabrication to those stringers that were originally set up for the white leg of despair?

Pretty happy about that!:)

I think you better put another pot of coffee on. You were talking about the starter while pointing at the alternator at about the 1:29 mark :p I think your ideas for the motor mount risers will be more than sufficient.

Whoops! Well, like I said just yammering on for no real reason:rolleyes::facepalm: Yah, at that point I only had about 1 cup of the full pot in my body. I should have at least 2 before I'm actually allowed to talk about anything.

As agreed:

Looks good! Sounds like you've got a plan, but have you settled on a 2" wood block or an aluminum 2" square tube 'packed' w/ resin'd plywood?

Nah, I'll just use a fat block of wood all sealed up. That spot there should be high and dry anyway so no prob.:)

Hey Jason, 2" + a skosh should be about right for the risers. The reason I said about the AL stuffed tubes was even with glassed over wood the lag bolts might tend to sink into the wood. The AL would lend some stability in that regard. Also if you make a 12-18" riser, use more than 2 lag bolts to hold it in place. At least 4 lags and some PL between the riser and stringer. Every time you rev that powerful beast up the engine torque is against four mounts and the motor will flex some so the riser has to be solid. And maybe I'm full of beeswax.

Hi Jason. Just a thought. If you make the risers long enough, maybe you could slip them in and mark the motor mount holes and riser mount holes. Then take them back out, drill all the holes and slip them back in without taking the engine back out. Maybe you could fit a right angle drill in with the engine in there. I'm thinking all this just seeing your pics and videos, I've never seen an I/O setup up close. So I may be suggesting something impossible. All your work so far looks great. I think you should have your own boat restoration reality show :D

Great luck on the stringers matching up so close for the 4.3 mounts! Killer!!!! Your riser plan sounds solid dude...

Thanks for the vid brutha! If only I could get my butt running!

Great work as always....

Wow Jas, I finally made it through all the vids...Great Job! You finally kicked its butt! Way to go!

Even though I don't own an I/O...this series of how to's and Not -to's should help out many a rookie when they go to tackle this project...

I made a sketch of what I will call an OVER-Built riser for your mounts...

Maybe not what you are lookin for, but maybe it'll give ya an idea or two...

LEGEND:

BLACK=NEW WOOD RISER, EPOXY SEALED, AFTER ALL THE DRILLING, ROT RESISTANT HARDWOOD PREFFERED
PURPLE=STRINGER IN THE BOAT
DARK GREEN=MOTOR MOUNT
BLUE= 3/8 INCH GRADE 8 BOLTS,STAINLESS STEEL[SS]
RED/GRAY= 3/8 INCH LOCK WASHERS AND FLAT WASHERS,SS
ORANGE= 3/8 LOCKNUT,SS
LIGHT GREEN= 3/8 LAG BOLTS,SS, AS LONG AS NEEDED TO REACH 1/2 TO 2/3 OF THE WAY INTO THE MAIN STRINGERS
YELLOW= EPOXY, TO HOLD THE GRADE 8 BOLTS FROM TURNING

I would add that 5200 be used between all adjoining surfaces and applied to all the bolts.

This design also allows for repair or replacement in the future, should the need arise.

Yah, I totally planned on having 4 lags through the riser and into the original stringer both. Just that the two center ones would also be run through the engine mounts. Fat piece of wood, epoxied, painted, 5200, 4 beefy lags = bomber.

Ah, yes you are certainly full of beeswax!:p:D

I'd definitely like to keep the engine in place if I can help it. With a 90 degree drill, plus the drill bit, I just don't think I can fit it in there. Maaaayyyybe I can pull that alternator out of the way and just make it work. We'll see, I'll take a closer look at it. If not, no biggie, I'll just lift er up, install risers, put er down, wrestle into place.

I'm gonna name my boat " white leg of despair "

Is that because you need to wear shorts more often?:p

(sorry man:D)

GT, thanks for taking the time to draw that up buddy! You may have something there, I'll chew on that a bit, appreciated!

--------------------------------

I stayed out super late last night (ok like 9:30pm) so I slept a bit later than usual = no progress to speak of today. I did stand and stare some at those stringers for about 5 minutes on my way out the door, but that's about it.

So, no video today sorry - here's a stand in for ya. One of the guys over on DC posted this up a while ago, cracked me up....

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Hi Jas:

Regarding your stringer riser:

As you know I have inline sixes and the mounting is a little different. I purchased one last year which used a piece of common 2 x 4 as a mount. Over time the vibrations from the motor cause the wood to collapse slightly resulting in frequent alignment problems. Although sound, I'm a little worried that your idea will produce the same result but it would be easily remedied by using a block of hardwood instead of common lumber! I've seen that done with good results after sealing and painting etc.

However, as I'm "just a glasser" I'm not sure my opinions are of value on a tinny!

Well, your choice in boat building materials is really stinky but I suppose there is hope for every guy here on iboats:p

Thanks for swinging through KW:D

Psst...coonie, you around? I think he's checked out for the night. Should we trash the place again? I got dibs on the half-eaten sandwich he left over there on the port side gunnel...

Nope, I said I was keeping my raccoons locked up & quiet over in the ole Jas & Son's boat yard. Besides, the neighbor's been complaining about the noise, the mess & particularly the smell:eek:. Said the EPA was getting a call, ''cause it smells like a 'glasser overhauling facility w/ a junk yard out back.....

Besides, I'm afraid the raccoons have taken up w/ an unsavory bunch:
angry-mob-vector.jpgthanks GT1M for the pix
We don't want the MRS to shut 'er down & tell Jas we ain't welcome here no more

Who you kidding? With the 3am wakeups, boat/motor work & the pre-dawn runs, Jas' ain't leavin' no food uneaten. I can't imagine the calories that engine needs every day: what 12-15K? Just 1157.2/day for the nervous energy. Oh and training for the Mudder Death Race 6000, I don't even want to see those numbers... If he aint dead, he'll be able to lift the motor back over the stern solo WITHOUT the hoist by May. You know, except for overcoming the height problem. I ain' t no NBA basketball player either:facepalm:

Okeedoke - this morning I got a few minutes to work on engine alignment. It went really well! (surprisingly well)...

That alignment bar went in first shot!

(yes, that's 5200 all over my sweat pants there, rats)

Next up, I can measure out/build and install the stringer risers.

Hey, it's Friday and I'll take it!:D
