Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Yep, you're right but Rustoleum and Easypoxy are MUCH thicker. I have a 1.5 tip HVLP gun for spraying Auto Paint and it works great. The 2.5 is for primer, metal flake and gelcoat. Works Great. NOTE: That's why I said to ONLY thin the Rustoleum 10%. I also add some Penetrol for flow control, OH... and don't forget the Valspar Hardener.

went down and low and behold a two pack kit of 1 quart hvlp guns,

You might want to check the size of the nozzles on the guns. If they are 1.5 or smaller you WILL need to thin the paint quite a bit or get bigger nozzles and for Rustoleum it will probably need to be 1:1 Like JAS said. 1.8 to 2.0 I'd thin about 30%. You'll just have to experiment a bit.

Thanks WoG, The guns came with 1.4 and 1.7 nozzles, I am going to give the roller a try first.

Yeah, that's pretty standard. The 1.7 would require you to thin at least 40% or maybe 50. You might be able to get a 2.0 Nozzle for the big gun on Ebay. The TPC nozzles should fit. I think they go for $14.99 +shipping.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks a bunch guys! Good info on paint/sprayers and such, thanks for chipping in!

OK, most of the weekend was burned up being a lumberjack and a carpenter. But, I was able to spend a few minutes as a shadetree boat builder.

I got my stainless hinges on Saturday, installed em, love em.

Here is what I used to install my bow hatches...

I was hoping to get a clean look to em. The original set had rivet heads and all the hinges showing.

Stuffed more flotation in the bow and laid down the Velcro strips...

Side hatches too...

Peeled the backer and pressed everything in place...

Happy Jas!!:D

For the cabin I just have a couple of things left...

1. Build a drop in deck piece.

2. Shine up and mount that alum trim piece for the cabin support arch deal.

3. Cover the cushions with vinyl

Then I'll be done with the cabin!

What's the idea behind the Velcro?

I didn't want rivet heads (or hinges for that matter) showing on the topside. So, hatches are secured to the framework via Velcrow. Don't sweat it, it's strong as all get out.

Makes a difference in person anyway.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks yoop!

OK EZ, so apparently you got into my head with the Velcro business. I went back and ran some stainless all around the perimeter...
P1050840.jpg

The center portions of the hatches I could mount from underneath so nothing showing topside there. Still a pretty clean looking install.

I didn't go back and replace all those soap bottles though, you'll have to live with that buddy:D

I also got the removable deck piece cut, sanded, primed, textured, and painted. Here it is with the final coat drying...
P1050842.jpg

I cleaned up and installed that bow structure trim piece...
P1050839.jpg

I tried buffing that out with a variety of things. It's plenty clean but not chrome shiny like some of you guys have been able to do on your aluminum trim pieces. You guys must be taking off the anodized first then buffing out? Is that right? I didn't sand off the anodized on that piece, that's gotta be it, eh?

Cheers!:D

The cabin looks great, ready to store a bunch of tackle or serve as temporary housing for you in case you drag another ugly boat home to salvage parts from:)

Is the tool box sitting on the fuel tank in the photo? Are the fuel lines already in place?

The progress from here on out should be all fun stuff, looking forward to seeing the 4.3 in there:D

Man this is looking great Jsaon, I hope mine comes out half as good as yours. What paint and primer did you use on top of the epoxy that you laid down? Just another thing that I am going to be getting soon and did not think that the clean metal primer was the thing to use on the wood deck.

I think it would be comfortable quarters if the wife throws me out;)

Yup, that would be the forward tank. Where that box is sitting will be a little stash area for small stuff.

Agreed! It's cool finally seeing this rig take a little shape. I am getting closer to the day I can get my hands on that Merc:)

Thanks bro!

Yah, I am using Rustoleum on all that stuff. Yup, I know it says clean metal primer on the can so I am pretending that it will stick to wood and epoxy too:eek::D

Thanks Charlie! You know it! Summertimebreezefresh Scent is how I roll;)

Today I learned that if I say "What's the idea behind the Velcro?" It will be interpreted as "that velcro is pretty rinky-dink and you should really drop some screws in there" :p:p

Nah, my interpretation was that you were worried that my hatches would fall off while underway, in heavy seas, and my Islander would immediately sink like a stone to the bottom of the sea. And, we would be eaten by dog fish (bowfin)....

Well, not anymore my friend! So sinking here!

So what if you said "What's the idea with the I/O?"

Just kidding Jas, we know I/O's rule:D......and big kudo's from out here!!;)
