You beat me to it Ben. Yea CB, you do not want to ground anything to your boat. It causes really bad things to happen to aluminum boats, like eating holes in em:eek:

Very good point, I stand corrected. I removed my post, dont want any misinformation floating around.

Not near as far as when you started. You will be there soon.

Too right buddy, too right. Cheers man!

OK, got my Berts Tracks Inserts yesterday, these will finish off nicely eh...

This morning I tackled the upholstery work on my headliner. Dood, it was tough!

First up, I smacked in a couple of stainless T Nuts for mounting my dome light...
P1050766.jpg

Laid down two layers of this foam and tacked it in place...
P1050767.jpg

Got the vinyl in place...
P1050768.jpg

After that photo I got another cup of coffee, did some stretches, ran some wind sprints and punched myself in the face a few times to get ready. I knew this would be a challenge.

I was grunting, huffing, puffing, sweating - neighbors prolly though I was wrestling a bear in the wee hours of the morning.

I started with the inside cutout then worked my way around the outside. Backside shot...

And the finished product after about 3 hours of work...

OK, so I have a few wrinkles there, rats! Oh well, honestly, I'm not so sure I could have done much better. I am satisfied with the outcome, being a headliner with padding I can live with it. As I was going along I kept lifting it up checking to see what it looked like - sorta old man climbing out of a pool he was in for waaay too long. Scary! Wrinkles everywhere! So by comparison, it's pretty good. I am awarding myself a C- but because I am a rank amateur and grading on a curve, official grade B-.

Isn't it possible to somehow use heat to take the wrinkles out? (not that I know anything about this stuff)

Actually, that wrinkle in the upper right hand corner I believe may have happened because I put a little too much heat on it. I think it stretched a lil too much, then constricted:facepalm: Rats!

Here is what I did attempt though...

I laid down a couple of pieces of plywood and threw on my heavy tool box...
P1050775.jpg

Maybe that will flatten it out:confused:

I'll report back later this afternoon on that.

Either way, I am all right with the results. It doesn't look too bad in person.:)

When folks are staring at you rig at the dock complimenting you...it's not real likely that they will notice any tiny wrinkles in the cabin headliner.:)

Looking good to me, ready to hoist the Merc and see if it fits yet? :D

3 weeks is a lotta time to bolt in that 4.3, if you need 5200 let me know I have extra!

Hey Jason, got to thinking about my wiring diagram. I am not sure if your switches have grounds to them for the device it is going to, so I modified it to match if there is only a hot going to the switch. I just have not really looked at any switchs for the boat as of yet.

Thanks buddy, yur a heck of a guy. I figure if any fish finds his way in there to lay down for a nap, they are welcome to make any comments they like.

I keep thinking that I should be running out of things to build so I can move on to the Merc! Ah, doesn't seem like it!

I'll take it! You got a marine tech with 20 years experience wrenching on Mercs to go along with that 5200? That should speed things up:D

Progress...

Last night I got the bow support structure piece padded with foam and wrapped in vinyl...
P1050777.jpg

and this morning I got it installed.

I also installed the headliner, here is how it worked that:

First up I ran the wiring for my dome light.

Then I slid it into place and clamped it up through the hatch...
P1050780.jpg

I marked all the joists/stringers with blue tape so I knew where they were, I sure didn't want to miss and end up poking a bunch of holes in my vinyl...
P1050781.jpg

P1050782.jpg

SS screws with finish washers, I think it looks purdy good...
P1050783.jpg

Finished product...
P1050785.jpg

I have an aluminum trim piece that goes over that top row of staples. I just want to get it shined up before I install it, should finish off nicely.

I like how the headliner has just a little bit of curvature to it, kinda cool.

Cheers fellas!

Awesome work Jason.

As far as the wrinkles are concerned. I think i know where you went wrong. Although they are minor.

You started on the hole first. You should have wrapped and stapled the whole headliner first on the outside edges of the whole thing. Then you come in, cut your X in the liner at the hole, and stretch and pull and staple from there. That way, you are working in a much smaller location to reduce wrinkles. Any wrinkles that exist, would be pulled out at the hatch hole. But hey man, live and learn. You are doing a fan-frikkin-tastic job.
Keep up the good work.

Nice addition. Gonna do the rest of the ceiling? This is the last 10% stuff I talk about that always gets noticed. Very nice!!!

Vinyl looks great! I agree with Kelly, how do you say you have no idea what you're doing and it all turns out so great? :D keep it up, mine will never look this good. I can't even get a deck down :).

Thanks BN, I am pretty happy with it!:)

Awesome work Jason.

You started on the hole first.

Yah, you may be right:confused:

I actually spent some time thinking through the order, starting inside vs. starting outside. My rational for starting inside was that the rest of the vinyl would still be loose, giving me all possibility flexibility to complete those tight/difficult inside corners. I figured if I wrapped the outside first it would be super tough to pull an already very tight inside corner.

Your rational is a good one too though buddy!

I'll try the outside then inside route on the next Islander;)

Fellas, seriously, I am just bumping along while you guys babysit and talk trash here. It's all good.:D

Thanks Michael!

Yah, I opted not to not go with a headliner for the upper section of the cabin. I cut out a quick template to see what it would look like and it blocks a portion of the windows, both front and side. While a nice headliner would finish off that space nicely I'd rather have as much window/sunlight real estate as I can get, ya know.:)

By the way, here is a quick unofficial before/after...

I still need to install the dome light and I'll trim out/paint that hatch to help it look a little nicer.

Looks great man!!! How long did it take to find tape exactly the right color to match ?:D I'm starting to agree with these other guys that you may be sandbagging and actually know what your doing:) Is there going to be an ad at the end of this thread for "Jason's Boat Shop and Soap bottle Recycling Service " ?
