Dude, Don't get to down on yourself, upholstery isn't easy!

Have you tried starting in the center outside and going right one staple and then left one staple alternating so as to keep things even???

I think with a little practice yous can accomplish anything,.....

Though I do beleive that your story's about trying to learn to sew next winter could be epic,.......

Jason - I feel your pain bro. Why don't you sub that out? It shouldn't cost much to wrap and tack only. I did the same thing on my SS. Labor was about $150 and it came out looking great. You just can't beat someone at their own trade.

Yah, not a biggie. I really just wanted to post up that vid so other guys can see the challenges involved with wrapping that fat cushion stuff. Hopefully ya'll can learn from my failed attempts and save time and $$ by skipping right over those sorts of methods.

I really think no matter how hard I tried it would have been next to impossible to have it look right. A formed cushion with piping, all sewn up is the way to go on these in my opinion.

Totally agree buddy - I may very well go that route Michael and would be happy to cough up $150 to have that job completed. After the research I did on my seat upholstery estimates last year my guess is that my local places will charge me double (or more) that amount, unfortunately.

I'll be on the hunt...

We'll see how that shakes out, I'd love to have them done this summer and ready to go.

Cheers guys!!:)

I was pulling for you Jas, I thought if you pulled this off all I needed was large box with enough postage to Midland for mine. Then again if it's gonna cost around $300 for my bow seats I'm buying "Sewing for Dummies" this winter. Those books got me this job! Sew damn it sew.....

I see EZ is acting out today.

Hey! So, I was digging a little and I see there is a newer marine upholstery place right on my route home from work. I didn't even know it was there! Man that would be sweet if they could give me a reasonable price. Just driving around in my hog Suburban getting estimates really starts to add up.

I'd be pumped to drop those cushions off and pick them up in a few weeks all done up nice and neat by a pro:)

I may have to forgo that pleated vinyl I was thinking before to help cover the cost of these cushions being done though. Ah well, it's all good - we'll see.

Hey Jas, win some - lose some. Your attitude is perfect and I'm sure that Islander's going to get wet this year. Just chuck in some throw cushions 'til the upholstery is done. Keep up the good work and keep the updates coming. (No fear of that not happening! :D)

Yah buddy, I am well aware of my limitations. I am no pro so some stuff is entirely acceptable given my skill level and other stuff needs the hands of a pro, or, simply doesn't happen. It's all good bro!:)

Yah, pretty sure the fish won't care a bit either.

Man, I was just thinking of fresh fish on the grill. YUM!!!

seat schmeat!

schmeat? Really? schmeat? Oh Kev:facepalm:

Hey, good to see ya man:)

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

OK, little progress this am...

I gave a light sanding to my side panels to smooth them nice since I am leaning towards not wrapping them in vinyl now. Laid down a coat of Rustoleum...

I think I'll do one more light sand and spray them for a nice finish.

Here is the brush I used on em. It's kind of Home Depot's answer to Purdy brushes, they just came out. I like it, especially at $4 less than the equivalent Purdy brush.

I have my cabin cushions loaded in the back of the truck and I am really hoping I can score a reasonable estimate on a vinyl job today. We'll see. I don't at all mind learning to sew this winter but I'd rather have those cushions done this summer, eh.

Cheers fellas:D

Hi Jas:

Whether or not the boat is a glasser or a tinny you're doing the kind of work which makes this site tick. Your reporting is interesting and detailed and keeps everyone coming back to steal your ideas. All in all, your posts and your project are hard to beat. Still...shame it's not fiberglass, eh?

Hey Jason, the side panels are looking good , you were up extra early this morning. A guy has to do what a guy has to do to get things done.

Thanks for the kind words KW, much appreciated. Deserved? Ah, I dunno about that. I think we'll need to wait and see this Islander, under power, on the water first;)

Yah, with three little ones (3, 5, and 6) at my place, 3am is actually just about the only time daddy isn't on duty. So you are very right gotta do what I gotta to if this tub wants to ever find it's way to the water.:)

Nah, no sweat TII. Since it just rolled over to the new month I now have my one free trip to the landfill for June. Maybe I should be looking for another to throw away???

:D:D

Way to busy to make my way to the upholstery guy today for an estimate, bummer. Maybe tomorrow.

Cheers fellas!

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

A few years ago, I found an '86 Grumman 18' fish n ski boat. It was my second "project" boat -- it had no motor, wiring, trailer was a bit rusted (painted, had been used in salt water.) When I took the boat to a shop to have a motor installed, I soon learned that the foredeck, cockpit deck and transom were rotten. Literally, when he removed the aluminum cap on the transom, he scooped the wood out -- it looked like mulch. The reason -- the floor ended at the transom, which sat in a aluminum tray with no way for water to drain. Voila, all water on the deck draining to the rear of the boat floor ended up in the tray, wicked up into the wood of the transom.

A couple of thousand dollars later, I've had four very happy seasons using my little grumman.

The little I've read of your project, you're probably way ahead of the stages I described. I guess I'm sharing my experience more from the perspective of, the project WILL be very much worth it. A good used boat project can result in a very satisfactory boating experience.

Happy boating! Regards, Weareallnuts

Hey! Welcome to iboats and thanks for stopping by man. Yah, there is no doubt this rig will be well worth the rebuild effort. I am way looking forward to the finish line:)

Well, not much progress this morning. I checked on the side panels that I painted yesterday. I am very happy with how smooth/glossy that Rustoleum went down, quite nice actually. I'm sure I'll be content with not wrapping them in vinyl.

I gave them a light sanding with 220 and will put on a finish coat or two after they are installed.

After that, I sat in the boat and stewed for a while on the next steps...........

Jay did you use gloss paint or flat paint for the side panels?

Rustoleum Light Machine Gray - I'm pretty sure it's a Gloss finish but it doesn't say on the can. The same will be laid down for the deck and seat boxes too.
