Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

ad at the end of this thread for "Jason's Boat Shop and Soap bottle Recycling Service " ?

Thanks yoop, much appreciated!

I will tell you I am really enjoying this boat building process, but, I'll be pumped when it's done! No boat shop here buddy!:D

Oh, yea, BTW..I have to ummm ask a question.
Did you hide anything behind that swanky head liner?

You were nervous asking huh!

Well, big dummy me!

I fully intended to throw some noodles in there but I totally forgot! I had the headliner shimmed up perfectly and about 3/4 of the screws driven in by the time I remembered. Aaaakkkk!

I kept right on rolling, it's not coming down to toss in a couple of noodles. Nah.

Rock on!:D

Is there going to be an ad at the end of this thread for "Jason's Boat Shop and Soap bottle Recycling Service " ?

Lol! I love it!!! And we can't joke too much, i suppose. The appliance salesman Ooops started a thread on iboats and by the time he was wrapping up his project he'd started his own boat repair shop! The first one's the education, then the addiction hits. :D

That vinyl looks great, Jas. Nice, clean, and professional looking. All it's lacking is some splattered salmon blood.

Thanks a bunch fellas! Yah TII, doing my best to build this as a solid fishing rig but still keep it comfortable for family fun days eh!

WS - NO DIRTY SHOES ON THE CLEAN WHITE VINYL! Salmon blood? OK:)

Jas, I have a question on your paint job, going back to page 78-79 of your thread. How long after wiping down with actetone did you wait to paint? I see you had no problems with the actetone wrinkling the paint underneath even when you thinned the primer 50/50. Top coat you thinned with mineral spirits correct? Have you checked to se how tough the paint is yet? I'm off to Montana in and hour to pick up supplies, Zinc chromate, Rusto High Perf metal primer, High perf enamel, and hardner, maybe even an HVLP gun, hmmm.

Jas, I have a question on your paint job

OK Glen, I went back to do a little reading and remembering. Warning! I am definitely not the best guy to be asking these questions! Just learning as I go!!!! But I'll give ya what I got buddy.

How long after wiping down with actetone did you wait to paint?

Not long at all, like 20 minutes. Acetone prolly dried in 5.
I see you had no problems with the actetone wrinkling the paint underneath even when you thinned the primer 50/50.

Nope, the wrinkling (and drips and runs) I got because I sprayed too much on. My main issue was that I didn't have excellent lighting while I was working. Good lighting won't cut it in my opinion. I had poor lighting that day and had a tough time seeing what I was doing, sprayed too much.

Top coat you thinned with mineral spirits correct?

Yup (I think anyway), don't know if I should have gone with Acetone or Mineral Spirits. Don't know if it matters.

Have you checked to se how tough the paint is yet?

I haven't really picked at it, if it sticks cool, if not, it's the bottom so no biggie. I'll lift it up sand and re coat a few years down the road if necessary.

I'll say this...

I had an incident with a ladder and the bow stop where the paint came off. I can see that the separation happened between the self etching primer and the clean metal primer. Why? I dunno, could be a number of issues. I didn't sand and clean between the self etch and Rusto Primer, that could be it. While it was warm in garage my aluminum hull might not have been warm enough, that could be it. I might not have needed the primer coat, maybe could have just gone straight to top coat (thread over on one of the OB threads kicked this idea around a little), that could be it. Could be any combo of those things. Could be none of those as it may be nice and hard now??? I could/should check.

I'll also say this...

For the rest of the rig my methods will alter just a little:
1) I'll give the self etch a light sand and wash
2) I'll be spraying in nice warm dry weather
3) I'll spray under great light lighting (direct sunlight in the back yard)
4) I'll also be using that magic hardener stuff added to the Rustoleum.

Will any of that work? Oh, I dunno.

I'm off to Montana in and hour to pick up supplies

Safe travels my friend!

Lights look great are you living in the boat yet ? I plan on trying that magic hardener stuff as well. If I was going to spray and had to thin the rusto to do that I think I would just go with a two stage paint to begin with. The only advantage I see of using a single stage paint is simplicity and easy to apply with brush/roller. I've thought about this a great deal and really wanted to get one of those handy dandy hvlp guns but just can't justify it for a rusto paint job. I know people spray rusto with great results but it just seems to me that thinning and spraying create more variables than there worth for a " bottom feeder" paint job. Just My two cents (or less)

For me, the huge advantages would be...

1. 22 bux a gallon

AND

2. super easy, convenient, buy the rattle can at the lumber yard and touch up the damage aspect

As for thinning, I always have Acetone/Mineral Spirits on hand so no biggie there.

Yah, I tried to roll. And tried to roll and tip. Both were terrible! Spray went on great for me. The issues I had were just cuz I am dumb/slow learner. From here on, I'd be a sprayer though:D

Spraying with HVLP is really not that hard to do. Practice makes Perfect. After 20 minutes you'll be a pro. If you get the proper nozzle/tip in the gun, you don't have to thin the paint all that much. I shoot rustoleum with only 10% acetone and the hardener. Gunna be doing my trailer as soon as the weater gets warm enough and you can check the results. My Gun cost me 40 bucks on Ebay. If you have a good compressor Spraying is the only way to go.

Jas, your interior work is Lookin Good!!!!

O.K. you guys have talked me into it I'll order a sprayer:)I figure if your average person can learn how to use one in 20 minutes I should be good with a couple days of practice:D

Thanks wood! Yah, I thinned at 1:1 as my temps were low. Just trying to have it dry a little better. This summer I'll not need to thin quite that much.

Dood, that was pretty easy! I wonder what else I can talk ya into:D

Yah, I am a stumbling bumbeling bone head and I even got marginal results. Course, you are a yooper, so, uh, yah there is that to factor in. Could be trouble.

I have one just like that and am pretty happy with it. I got it about 7 years ago to paint a truck frame and flatbed for my shop teacher. Even used good old rustoleum.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Thanks for the info Jas, just got back from Havre Mt. Didn't save a whole lot on the paint, but saved $27.00 per sheet on 5/8" and $31.00 on the 3/4" plywood. Way worth the trip right there. Oh and my wife reminded me I had some spray guns in the basement, went down and low and behold a two pack kit of 1 quart hvlp guns, I forgot I purchased 4 years a go on a can't beat it sale. DUH.
Thanks again Glen

I do not know the viscosity of Rustoleum but that 2.5 is way to much for automotive paint. With base clear you will have more runs than you would want to sand out.

Yep, you're right but Rustoleum and Easypoxy are MUCH thicker. I have a 1.5 tip HVLP gun for spraying Auto Paint and it works great. The 2.5 is for primer, metal flake and gelcoat. Works Great. NOTE: That's why I said to ONLY thin the Rustoleum 10%. I also add some Penetrol for flow control, OH... and don't forget the Valspar Hardener.

You might want to check the size of the nozzles on the guns. If they are 1.5 or smaller you WILL need to thin the paint quite a bit or get bigger nozzles and for Rustoleum it will probably need to be 1:1 Like JAS said. 1.8 to 2.0 I'd thin about 30%. You'll just have to experiment a bit.

Re: 1976 22' Starcraft Islander Rebuild

Great advice on the nozzle's guys as I have been considering this kit for a while http://www.tcpglobal.com/spraygundepot/tcpgate.aspx and comes with smaller nozzles so knowing I'll need a 2.5 for the rusto is great.

Jas I'm a tool junky so pretty easy to talk me into most things tool related :) You guys just gave me an excuse :D

My B.I.L has the EXACT set up guns and HE LOVES Em. PLUS you can buy replacement nozzles on Ebay for $15.00 bucks I'd recommend getting one with a 2.0. It is a UNIVERSAL tip.
