Re: 1968-71 Naden N-16 Big Fisherman Restoration

Not much time to work in the last few days. Good weather, good boating, good fishing, and family coming into town for the pending arrival of the newest able-seaman has been fabulous, but hasn't given much time for boat building.

I was planning on getting back at it tonight, but had to begin repairs to a boat lift. A rusty boat lift cable gave out, dropping the boat....without damage to anything.

After the first stage of the repair was done (teardown of the cable system on the lift), I managed to get back to stripping the Naden again tonight. Spray spray, cover cover, scrape scrape. 18 1/4 hours and $200.

Looks like you won the battle with the paint Peter, there always seems to be something that needs repair and will take you away from boat rebuilding.

Nice work on the stripping...
That hull is looking like a real good candidate for a "Polished" finish...

Thanks GT. And Dozer you are right. Tonight I began tearing down the winch on the boat lift - it doesn't lock, and I finally worked out why, after about an hour's work. Back at the Naden again tonight. 19 hours and $200. The spray bottle broke, so I'll have to find another method of putting the stripper on.

Wow! You uncovered the old gal's sweet lines and beautiful curves. Great boat Peter, looking forward to the end result of your labor.

Hey Peter is Naden still in business in Vermillion Bay, he used to be one of my customers, but I haven't been there in a couple of years, if he is you could probably get parts from him if you need them....John

Thanks John for the tip, but unfortunately, Naden Vermillion Bay sold out a couple of years ago - they are now run out of Temagami. I managed to find some supplies up in Kenora.

Watermann - I agree - also looking forward to getting finished. Amazing how new-looking the aluminum comes, with just the stripping.

If the bugs are bad you have a couple of choices...
Harsh chemicals such as DEET or herbal repellents such as these...
Essential oils such as lemon balm (citronella), pennyroyal, lavender, and rose geranium
You can pour some on a scarf and wrap it around your neck or you can make a lotion using liquid Castile soap...10-15 drops per ounce of soap...
You can check at your local pharmacy or botanical supply house.
:)
If the swearing persists you may have to make yourself a swearing jar and throw a dollar in every time you curse...:D

Hmmm

If I had done that a few months ago, I might already have had the $$ for a Chieftain.

Start them young loving the water and boats to keep the tradition alive. I think it's better to beg for forgiveness... :D

Thanks for all the best wishes everyone! Much appreciated.

Ok - after a great week with family, visitors, kids on the tube, I finally got back out to the Naden tonight. Same story as before - spray and scrape. I ran out of stripper again, so picked up another quart - that should be enough to finish the boat off. 21.5 hours and $225 into this boat. I'll be in Toronto for the next few days, so unless I can get to it again tomorrow, it might be a few before another update.

Do yourself a favor and don't count the hours or dollars on your resto... you'll only poop yourself when you're finished.

... but if you do keep track of them, compare the final cost to a brand new boat like the one you have and you'll see what a great deal you got by doing the job yourself.

Thanks jign - that's funny. But please don't mention poop. It's been a busy week.

A brand new similar boat costs about $3500. I figure I'll have about $500 to $1000 into this by the time I'm done...but will have a 'like-new' boat, unless, in my sleep deprived state.....I mess it up.

A 'like new' family heirloom to be passed down from oldest to newest as they get old enough.

I see additional MBS purchases in your future..... Start 'em early on a strict tin only diet :D

^^ he said sleep deprived & poop  :faint2: :bounce:

All my kids are 4 leggers, kennel trained & furry :watermelon: hope they like boats.....

Safe travels

Ok - so back from a business trip. While away, I managed to pick up used a couple of needed tools - a 2350psi pressure washer, and an industrial compressor. My HVLP gun arrived a little while ago, so I now have the major tools I need for cleaning and painting. Hopefully I can get back at the Naden tomorrow.
