Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

I assume the one quart size is more than enough??
Did you source it online or here in MI somewhere? Thinking about doing the same on the bottom as you did.

Yah, the quart took care of my hull, plus a bunch of trim stuff, plus I have enough left to handle bare alum trim on the Islander too.

I'm nearly sure I eBayed that SH.

The brushed bare alum looks cool but beware, it's a lot of work!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Little progress this morning.

I got the balance of the stern light wired up, bow light wired up, tach back to 6P, batt wires re routed so that the fuse panel is now powered by the starting batt and the Minn Kota is on the deep cell all on it's own. So far so good.

I am still struggling with these illuminated switches...

Monkeyed with them a bunch again this morning. I can get the bilge pump working fine and nav/anchor lights working fine. But, the bilge switch light is always on and the nav/anchor switch light I can't get on at all.

I do believe I have all the wiring correct so a burned light is about all I can think really.

Here is the back of the switch if ya feel like troubleshooting...

I'm juuuuuuuuuust about ready to throw in the towel on these. I think I'll swing over to the electronics forum and maybe those guys can find error in my ways.

First q?- how are you wiring them?

2ndQ?- are they all the same on the back, 5 poles?

1st possibility- Center pole= [+], is the light on yet, no should be the answer. then, connect a wire to one of the other poles right next to the center one, to ground, flip the switch in the opposite direction and see if the light comes on, should be YES.
OK, part 2; connect the bilge to the other pole, right next to the one you connected the light to...and the bilge should come on...
If all of the above checks out, you can use the other side of the switch to connect to the bilge through an auto on/off float switch, that way you have the option of full auto or manual on. Check out the pre-school drawing below...Make sure you have a fuse before the power IN, just in case I am way off base here, you will just pop the fuse, instead of anything else...

If this doesn't work I would be suspect that you might have bad switches...You can verify with a test light or Ohm meter...

Let me know if this helps or hinders...

That Yukon looks nice and should serve you well. I have to give you major kudos on splashing the jet. You went from start to float in less than 11 months and during alot of that time the jet was on the sidelines while you were working on the Islander. Job well done my friend.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

GT - thanks a bunch for taking the time man! I posted up over here too...

http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=524937

We are talking diodes now. Getting to be kinda unsimple and, un bare bones talk. I think I just need to go simple. Maybe.

Zop - thanks man!

Drew - Yah, not too bad of time over considering I chopped up a glasser, rebuilt a trailer, repainted the OB, and complete mod/fab work on the Jet hull. I still have yet to finish though, don't want to get ahead of my self eh. Thanks man!

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Hey Jas,
I checked out the electrical thread you posted and read the replies and I must admit, that I too came away more confused and confounded...I know and understand the use of diodes, but I cannot see them being necessary in this instance...

Fireman's description is fine for hooking up your bow and stern lights, if it was a double pole, double throw switch, but I believe that what you have is a single pole, double throw, yeah I know it gets confusing no matter what, but for arguments sake, give my way a try, for the bilge...

If you want to wire up the nav/anc lights, you will need a DPDT switch. because you are trying to power two different circuits with the same switch...
basically think of it as two spdt, single pole, double throw switches, ganged together...or you can use one switch for nav, and another for anchor...

If you try to use the switch that is in the picture that way, no matter which way you throw the switch, I believe that both lights will come on, because the anchor light will feed back to the nav light.

Bottom line, I believe that the two terminals that I drew going to ground in my sketch, basically complete the circuit for just the illuminated part of the switch, when the switch is off, the switch light should also be off, then when you throw the switch, either way the light should come on, indicating, that power is being fed to one or the other terminal...

without actually having them in my possesion it is difficult for me to be 100% certain, but from what I see is happening to you, and the design of that switch, I am sticking with my gut, until proven wrong...

Luck,
GT1M

This is a rough schematic of what I think is going on inside the switch

I hope this helps to clear things up...if not, we'll figure it out eventually:redface:

Side note, GT, I see your diagrams all over... nice work, very helpful.

I also can't see why you'd need a diode...

If it were me, I'd ditch that one for a double pole illuminated toggle... You can get a matching one at radio shack

Well this is how you would use the switch for a nav/anc light set-up using a diode...

Thanks Zopperman, just trying to pay back what I can for all the great help available here... I may get em wrong most of the time, but I have a thick skin, and I love to learn...

To late to help you.. but I just found out how awesome wax paper is...

I had the bright idea to line my bench with wax paper after I glued a piece of foam to my transom (had to hack and sand it off lol).

wax paper will not stick to epoxy!

And I think it may be the only thing in my garage that will not stick to that stuff ;)

Here is a tip I use when testing wiring circuits for boat and cars. Take the switch out and bring it to the work bench. Use 9 volt battery, alligator clip leads and a flash light bulb or test meter to create circuits similar to your boats equipment ie: the light bulb being the pump or running to the switch test it. By hooking th battery to the right poles on the switch the switches light will light. Hope this helps.

Re: 1968 15' Starcraft Jet Star Rebuild

Well guys, I super dooper a lot appreciate the help. Especially GT for the diagrams and such! I threw what I had at it for about an additional hour this morning and no go. I have no trouble getting the nav/anchor lights and the bilge pump to work properly. The switch light, not so much. I know there is talk of diodes and I do now believe I pulled some off of the original set up so that may have something to do with it.

This stuff is clearly outside of my skill base or the switch is bad. Either way, I've spent too much time on it and I need to move on. I should have stuck with my original plan and gone simple. Ah well, no big deal. Those illuminated switches are cool but if I can't get em to work, it's a wash.

I think the only thing I am concerned about is I really want these to go into the Islander...

These switches are bigger/beefier. I'll not be using the panel but I do want to use those switches. I'll work a little harder to get those up and working correctly. Oooorrrrrrr, maybe I should just stick em up back up on eBay and skip the headache:facepalm:

So I ended up going 1 and 1 this morning.

Loss on the switches so I pulled em out. Now ready to receive something basic...

I really wanted to get a win so I cherry picked hooking up the horn. All good there! No photo as, well, it's a horn you can't hear it in a picture.:)

Jason:
This is really quite simple.... Perhaps you guys need a refresher course.... It's all ball bearings (and diodes) these days... (That is funnier if you are a "Fletch" fan and remember the classic scene below where Chevy Chase was disguising himself as gordon liddy, the airplane mechanic).

Hey Jas,
PM me if you are really gonna get rid of those switches...I might be interested...

Sorry about the switches, Jas. You have spent more time on those than your first and only ride so far. :( You have plenty of time to figure them out for the Islander. I only used a separate "on" light for my bilge because it's easy to see if the nav/anc lights are on.

I know buddy, as soon as "diodes" cam into the conversation, my eyes started to glass over:redface:

Oh man, when you put it that way I:facepalm::facepalm::rolleyes:

Ah, for cryin out loud!

I think it's time to KICK IT OLD SCHOOL

I shuda went that direction from the get go. Shuda went with my gut from the beginning. Ah well.

Yah, I kinda think the push/pull would compliment the rig nicely :)
