I know Wal-Mart had black numbers, they prolly also have white. They were with the boat stuff.

Thanks, as often, WM will be one of my first stops. Then I work my way up from there!

It is because it is an extension cable. The original from the factory would have had a longer cable for the tach. If you are good at soldering I would recommend you open up the cable that goes to the tach and lengthen it at the control end. I prefer solder and heat shrink then you know you have a solid connection.

Yup, I'm pretty good at soldering. I'll have to extend all the three individual cables. A lot of work, but sure worth saving $145!! Might be a PIA in the future to trace wires if there is a problem, as you know, there are a lot of different color wires and all I have is black & red! I guess I could find some way to label the colors at the extensions I add.

This is about the same as GA Boater suggested, sorry my head wasn't screwed on tight when I repled earlier, too much stuff going on today with the Irene aftermath and other stuff. I need a rock to crawl under for a while.

After you crawl out from under the rock:

Auto parts stores have water proof splice connectors. A metal crimp connector with heat shrink tubing that water seals with some kind of goop inside the tubing. I've used these for several wet applications. Radio Shack has wire marker kits for $3 that stick on wires for ID. Lowes or H. Depot may have both of them or something similar. Use some split loom to cover and neaten everything when you're done. Can't spend $145 even with gas.

Thanks for the good tips! Headed off for my lake adventure early tomorrow, so will have to work on it when I get back. I'm at the late stage of trying to save as much as I can of what's left of my budget!

No electricity, no phone, but I have a plan. Hey, those things sound good! At least the road is not washed out.

Yeah, but I didn't have the plug in!!

My biggest concern at our place was limbs falling on the boat or cars. I pulled the boat next to the back steps and chained it to the iron rail, and we parked the cars in the middle of the yard. No troubles right here, Irene didn't live up to its warnings right in our particular area, but now our region is having major flooding. All that water is draining into the Mohawk River.

Cohoes Falls, usually just a trickle because of dams etc.:

Not sure if it's the right idea or not but I plan to extend My harness with solder and heat shrink I picked up some rolls of different colored tape at menards to mark wires with for future reference or if theres ever a problem. I'll also make a diagram as I go and staple it in My manual for future reference. Glad to hear the hurricane didn't hit You to hard LL keep at it.

A little belated storm update..

We were lucky & didn't suffer any damage, just the dock was under water. However my neighbors have a lot of work to do, their dock sections were blown all over the place. The boat looked OK though.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Working on the wiring today & looks like I'm missing a piece of the puzzle (or more).

I have the motor end of the 10' harness hooked up. All the wires match by color:

wDSC_5085.jpg

I don't know why the motor-end plug of the 6-wire connector has a pin in it and there are only 5 wires coming from the engine:

wDSC_5086.jpg

The only matching 2-pin connector from the oil tank fits to the warning horn:

wDSC_5087.jpg

The connectors on the front end of the 10' harness don't match up except for one of the 6-pin connectors. The triangular 3-wire connector has two female plugs coming together and the wire colors don't match; and where does the other 6-pin go?

wDSC_5088.jpg

Here's where it gets really fun. There is an 8-pin connection on the back of the tach and no 8-pin plug anywhere to be found:

wDSC_5089.jpg

I can't find anything in the shop manual about hooking it all up but this diagram, and everything else seems to be related to testing the circuits. The info that came with the control doesn't really tell and nothing came with the tach. I don't see any part listed on the BRP parts website either.

And you think I was confused before? Obviously missing something!

I just bought a 2006 Evinrude Johnson Predelivery and Installation Guide for $11 on ebay. Hope that can help unravel the mystery.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Mystery solved. It's amazing what Google can do.

I just ordered this baby in 20' length, that should be plenty long enough, and was only about $6 more than the 15' length. I eventually found it on the BRP website buried deep in the parts folders. Bought it at the cheapest place I could find. I've always thought their parts catalog was not intuitive, but then I'm not a mechanic either.

That's the animal. I can probably sell the 10' extension on ebay and make a fair amount of what I paid for that back, so live and learn. Thanks.
