Start that thing , will ya! Hope that's the last thing you need, LL. It looks like the right side is lower judging by the mounting bolt, as EZ said.

I've seen two grades of covers at Wallys. The cheaper one uses what looked like string to hold it down and the pricier one uses straps like in your pic. I don't remember if the fabric was sturdier on the strap model. Attwood show 3 grades.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

I'll have to look at the mounting tomorrow, I can't beleive I didn't notice that sooner. I don't think it'll take much to get it right, the mounting bolts seem to look further off in the photo than they are because the 5200 oozed out more from the left one so the top of it looks closer to the top of the transom than it is. The lighting makes it look worse too.

I hope tomorrow I have time to hook up the other end of the harness so we can see if it starts!

I notice my WM carried only Attwood in the store, but showed many more covers online. I ordered the one above. I plan to use it alone at the lake to keep the rain out, but will always have it covered with a second tarp when it's stored at home.

It might just an obstacle illusion in the pic. I've notice that a lot of items on WM are online only, but you can use ship to store and save shipping cost. Good if you have one close. Good luck on the start up. Bet you are itching to go!

My WM stocks up the boat section in the Spring and then the supply dwindles until the next year.

On further measuring, I think it might just be the way it looks. This morning I took off the cowl and measured and re-measured, used my square etc., and the most error I could come up with was 1/16" and I'm sure that ain't gonna matter. In the picture above, another reason the top mounting bolts look so far off is that the washer on the right is not as centered as the other one.

I measured at a lot of points, including the mounting plate/transom/keel as well as from the transom cap to various parts of the housing. I'm pretty well convinced it is OK, the cowl may be a little cattywonkus.

The one nearest me is that way too, but their variety is quite variable time to time. They don't seem to have a consistent stock, it's kind of hit or miss what you'll find there. WM's ship to store online ordering is pretty good and FREE. A little slow sometimes, but you know that going in.

A 1/16 of an inch will have no impact on your engine trust me most engine installers aren't that careful. The yellow wires in your photo are for the charging circuit. The rectangular box with the fins is your voltage regulator. When you start your engine if your tach is working and the battery is charging then everything is is working as it should. If the tach doesn't work you will need to troubleshoot the stator, voltage regulator and wires to find which one is bad.

I hope the boat doesn't sink with the weight of all the wire ties I used this morning! First thing I did was have to make a run to the closest local harware store when I found out I was out of them. This looked like a good bargain--500 of them: 300 7" and 200 4" for $10.99.

Otherwise, I spent a lot of time bundling and tying wires after getting things hooked up to make sure they were away from any sharp metal, ends of bolts etc. It took quite a while to route everything, but will be well worth it in the future I think.

Hooked up the battery and the lights work--just have to figure out why the bilge pump isn't working. Will it be a problem to jump it directly to the battery momentarily to see if the pump itself is working?

Time for lunch.

Wow lake, very impressive. I took the 1/16ths off all my measure sticks so I won't have that motor problem. Can't wait to hear how it runs. Can you take video? Oh yeah, thanks for the flange/drain info. Great work.

Thanks. I'll continue to try to solve the mystery of why it looks crooked--I can't see why right now. I do plan to take a video, we'll see how that goes, don't have a video camera but my P&S will take video.

:D

Sounds like my 48" T-square that I used during seat board cutting that was only 47-7/8" long! :D

Bilge pump: I took it out and touched the wires directly to the buss bars briefly and it runs OK. Reinstalled it. Then I saw that the fuse was blown, so I replaced it and threw the switch and it immediately blew. What would cause that?

The 12v Aux. outlet is also working OK, also the backlight in the tach.

Just further discovered that I had a 5A fuse on it, but it calls for a 2.5A.

No starting today, I'm bogged down in wiring stuff. And I'm off to the lake for a week tomorrow, so looks like we'll have to wait longer! Don't you like cliff hangers?:p

The steering arm that came with the motor is what determines how much the outboard turns. I wonder if you have an arm for a different outboard?

Going back, this may answer my earlier question about why the motor turns a little more one way than the other. I got one of these baby's on ebay (dated 2006) for $8 and hidef was right.

The steering arm has a different part number stamped on it than the motor calls for. After a little research, I see that the one I got apparently comes from a 1994 48hp Johnson.

Here's a steering arm chart for future reference:

What can I say I have installed a few outboards in my time. Nice job on the tying everything up. Looks real pretty. Check to make sure you don't have a short in your wiring going to the bilge pump. If you are popping 5 amp fuses a 2.5 amp won't stand a chance.

This is where all that fancy colored wire would have helped out! All red & black for me! :(

I don't see how any wires can be damaged, I was very careful during installation. I may have the 3-way switch wired wrong, I'll have to look into it when I get back.

I'm bettin you have a connection wired wrong causing a direct short. Unplug as much as you can, put a fuse in and then start plugging stuff back in until it pops. OR... Use a MultiMeter to check your voltage at each connection. Have you drawn a schematic? I find it helps me if I draw it out so I can SEE where everything is going and how it's all connected.;)

Well, the sad fact is that real life has intruded on my idyllic retirement life and I had to get a job. It will be part time, but for the first 9 weeks is full time while I'm being trained. It's an inopportune time to have to give up 9 weeks! Kinda depressing actually.

Boy, can I related to this!!!!!! I been trying for two months to get 3 days of work done on my boat to get her finished and LIFE has just beat me up. I'm sorry to hear about the Job and retirment situation. With the way the economy is going right now, I don't think I'll ever get to retire. Hang in there LL Maybe in the next couple of years it'll all turn around. I sure hope so.
