Hope that means you will be on lake soon showing off that beautiful boat. You just can't buy a new one like that.

Thanks, I'm losing hope of getting it to the lake this year. But wait! Lemme explain......The lake where I boat is 170 miles from me, but what I'll do when I finish is dip it locally in the river for a test run (at least) and maybe some further voyages this fall (<<mouth watering>>).

LL - so close and now waiting on the last few parts. A PITA for sure. I accidentally went to your first page and saw the index you added. A great idea to find things in your thread. Thanks. If all works out I may be needing that and all the other resto's here starting tomorrow. I've been disappointed trying to find a tinny, but maybe......... We'll see.

Here's another question, kind of an afterthought. I have an older (1960's) Johnson or Evinrude, can't remember which, 6 gallon gas tank that I repainted a few years back, and a somewhat newer (late 70's?) hose with primer bulb that I figured I'd use. You don't seen any problem with that do you? The hose is in very good shape, also the tank & I believe all is in good working order.

Tank is this type, not an actual picture of my tank:

Yup, getting antsy!

Not too long ago it dawned on me as I went back and looked for certain things that it took me forever to find stuff and I thought what good is that to somebody looking for something specific? I remembered I'd seen someone else do it so went ahead. I've used it myself quite a few times, glad it's useful for others.

Hang in there, the Tinny gods will smile upon you when the right one comes along, there are a lot of them out there! And now's a good time to be looking.

Your fuel tank looks better than this one

gas can.jpg

As long as yours isn't rusty inside and it holds pressure, go for it. Gotta pinch some pennies. The fuel line might be OK as long as t isn't cracked and hard. Same for the bulb. You'll know when you start the Beast!

If the fuel tank is clean inside use it. I use a steel can from the mid 70s and it is my best tank it doesn't leak and it is self venting. As for the fuel hose leave it hanging in the tool shed. Unfortunately that hose was made with rubber that is not compatible with ethanol and it will breakdown. Buy a new hose and fittings.

That's the same kind of tank I'm using. I put a bunch of nuts and bolts in mine after I took all the GUTS out of it and poured boiling hot water in it and shook the heck out of it for a while. I then soaked it in diswashing detergent mix for a day to degrease it and then another round of boiling water to clean it out. Reassembled it and then had it powder coated red Gloss. Cost me twenty bucks. Looks brand new. They did the cap in Black and Tank in Red.

Wood, it probably cost me almost that much for the rattle cans! To say nothing of the time it took. I don't know of any place around here that would do the powder coating, and so cheap.

My tank is in real good shape inside. I painted it red/black and used it some, so the paint is a little beat up. That'll be a project for another day when I'm actually looking for something to do! I really need 36 hours in a day as it is now.

hidef, that was my main concern and why I asked. Mine would probably work OK for a while but cause more problems later with the ethanol.

As said, tank is fine (just make sure it's venting properly, I had one that wasn't) but a brand new fuel line is in order for that nice motor.

Well lakelover, I just went through your entire thread. What a job and very well done. Anyone starting a resto should go through a few of these sites, it takes time but will no doubt save more than it takes in the long run. Thanks again.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Today was a day of adding supports to the cables and bundling & routing the wires carefully so things don't get tangled up when I put the stern light up/down. I also put the oil tank in, partially ran the discharge hose for the bilge pump (not sure exactly how that's going to exit the boat yet); and stuck the battery case in. It just barely fits under the splashwell.

Still waiting for my harness, battery cable and gas hose.

After that, I cleaned all the tools out of the boat, added more bungees to the tarp when I covered it up, and plan to move it closer to the house and away from the trees tomorrow. Then we'll wait for Irene.

I was looking at the old gas hose I have. It's in very good shape and appears to be made of the same stuff as the oil hose, so I don't see any reason not to keep it for a backup. Are the primer bulbs for the oil & gas hoses the same?

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Can someone recommend a cheap place to get 3" white vinyl numbers/letters? I haven't really looked around yet. I've seen 2" @ HD & Lowe's I think, but 3"? Not sure.

My wiring harness arrived yesterday, but going ot the lake tomorrow, so that will delay progress.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

A little setback....

I was looking over the wiring harness this morning. The 10' harness I bought appears to be about 4-5' too short :rolleyes: to reach the tach or control, no matter which side I run it up. As far as I can see, it's the only length offered by BRP. I should have caught this before. It appears that I can plug another harness into that one to extend it, but @ $145 including shipping, that hurts! Also another delay.

Irene has at least delayed my trip to the lake with closed roads and the power is out at the lake. My destination county has about 1/3 of the people without power, and roads are closed close to the lake, but I think I could get there. When I'm sure I can get there, I might just throw in the camp stove and propane tank and make an adventure of it.

It's gonna happen, LL. Couldn't you just splice in the needed length using some butt connectors and shrink tubing over the connectors? A lot cheaper and no waiting for parts.

Sounds like a fun adventure, some rustic camping:D

Sorry to hear the cable is not long enough. That's a real curveball to deal with.:(

Thanks for the encourgement & suggestion! But I don't think I can do that, the connector at the back of the tach is a 6-pin, and the other two are odd shaped.

Yeah, the wire from the oil tank to the front is plenty long, about 15'.
