Excellent job LL, very glad to see a well-planned paint job brought to fruition.:)

The gloss looks great, and I like the bare metal V:D

Thanks, & no worries about bunk scratching.

Personally I think you should come paint mine when it is ready that way you can just get more practice. That and I will get a sweet looking paint job to boot. Very nice Lakelover.

Thanks...I'll be over in a few days!

Thanks for the compliments. Sheesh, feels like I'm spamming, trying to remember how to do the multiple quotes. I did it before but forgot what I did.

Edit: OK, I got it.

Hello lakelover. It's been a while since I've been on here I just saw your question that you asked me on June 3,2010. My boat is a 1964 14 ft. Dart not Jet. and it is rated for a 45 hp. I am running a 30 hp Evinrude on it. I have a Bimini top on it and rewired it for new lights, bilge pump, and depth finder. I will try to post new picks of it in the near future. I primed the deck today and put on an electric trolling motor on it and I am now ready to put it in the water for the summer now. You did a great job on your boat. Looks fine.

Thanks fishingnella.

Here we are in rain for the next 3 days, so not much to do. That will give the paint a chance to cure.

I stripped the paint off my capacity plate and was kind of amused by what it said that I hadn't been able to read before. These things were flimsy, just adhesive-backed thin aluminum (?) plate, not much thicker than foil. The info looks like it was typed in with a typewriter, believe it or not.

Model: 15' Jet Star
Serial No.: 64-1629
Max. Motor: 45 h.p.

In the fourth area where it's hard to see in the picture, I can barely see it with a magnifier, it says: "15 yr. guarantee". :)

Anyone seen that on theirs before? Hard to imagine they had a very high production rate if they were typing these things out on a typewriter.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Today I got it flipped back over and got it on its "real" trailer. I've been doing a little final sanding with 220 on the topside, next I'm going out to mask that lovely hull, trim and interior so I can beging giving the bare aluminum spots a spray with the Moeller ZC. I'm really paranoid about getting it on something I've already painted. Note to self: If I ever do this again, don't paint the inside before painting the hull. Makes a lot more masking work. If all goes well and the weather cooperates, I might get a layer of the white undercoater down today. The weather is iffy. :(

In the meantime, I've been putting more coats of paint on my transom board and doing the final prep on that.

I also had to reinforce my Red Green paint booth because it nearly collapsed with the weight of the rain. One of the guy ropes snapped. A quick fix with some 2x4's wedged against the uprights is making it right (enough).

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Bad luck then good luck. I like the Moeller ZC just fine, except when they run out of pressure when there's about 1/3 of a can left!!! I got 2 or 3 of the bare metal spots sprayed then sputter-sputter-nothing. So I checked around online to see who might have ZC primer locally, then went to Advance Auto: out. On the way back I swung around to NAPA and here's the good luck - I got the last can of Duplicolor ZC etching primer - and it was on sale for 35% off! :)

So that step is done now, here are pictures while I wait for it to dry. I'm thinking I'll wait til tomorrow for the undercoater, as the weather still looks pretty iffy, a better forecast for tomorrow and Monday.

The last of the pinto pictures!

Hey you could leave her like that and name her TONTO. Didn't Tonto ride a pinto pony. I'd take the Moeller back where I bought it and ask for a refund. That is just NOT right, especially if you did not do excessive upside down "air only" nozzle cleaning.

FYI - Since it's getting hotter, you might want to thin the undercoater a bit. Thinner for it is a 50/50 mix of Xylene and Naptha. Pettit recommends no more than 10%

I did do a fair amount of that so it's partly my fault I guess. I had a lot of "sessions" with that can, few long ones. Can't take it back anyway, I got it on line when I got my motor paint. And yes, I figured on thinning the undercoater for that reason and because it's so thick anyway.

I'll tell ya, if nothing else, I'll be glad when the painting is over so I can stop banging my head on that darn ladder!:D

I've been a busy feller today. Up with the birds for the undercoater on the topside. This time I thinned it 10% and it went on much better. By design, the stuff is very thick, it's sort of a high build primer. I still couldn't do a second roll with a dry roller because it tacks up so suddenly, but it stayed wet long enough to smooth with the painting roller at the end of each section.

Four hours later, to the sanding. This time I had to do way less of that. I used the "very fine" sanding sponge mentioned above and then a scotch pad and got it real smooth. A little tweaking to my masking, and on with the first coat of burgundy.

The weather looks good for tomorrow, so in the morning, on to the second coat. This time I only mixed using 10 oz. of paint, and reduced the hardener and thinner amounts accordingly, and that covered the entire topside and inside gunwales and with a few ounces left over. I'm on my last quart of paint. Three coats should do it like on the hull. Sure don't want to buy any more!

So I've gone through all this work to get it looking like it did back when I got it...only a little better!:p

LL, Buddy, I'm telling ya, you have got the Roll n' Roll down pat! That is lookin AWESOME! I have caught a REAL NASTY summer cold and Inner Ear infection and my Equilibrium is so bad I can barely stand up so, work on my boat has slowed. I DO have the top side all prepped for Primer. Hopefully sometime this week but the temps in Tulsa this week are supposed to be over 100 all week. and unlike Some people I still have to work for a living.

If I didn't know better, I'd think you were talking about me :D. Here's a little secret, I'm probably headed that way this fall. Not sure I want to spend another relatively housebound winter here in NY, so might as well earn some $$$ while I'm not doing it! On the rolling, it was very difficult to get up under the inner rub rail trim all the way to the edge without getting bad runs. I caught most of them but have a few small ones this time. I'll have to sand them out, and I think the solution is to do that last 1/8" painstakingly with one of those sponge-stick thingies. I got to doing that toward the end of the work today. I hate runs!

...or maybe cut the end of a roller off square for that part of the job

Sorry you're under the weather. That heat sounds like a killer.

You and me both! I've been thinking more and more on that subject lately!

I'd use a 4" foam brush to "Cut in" the edges and then come back with the roller. Wrap it with in a plastic bag to keep it moist.

That's what I was doing toward the end, but next time will use a wider brush (already had a smaller one wet). It's funny that you figure things like that out and get really good at something just as you are finishing up the work.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Thanks, Broadcast.

The second coat is on and it's looking better all the time. It worked well to do those gunwale edges with a 4" sponge brush and a flashlight. Part of my problem is that its hard to see on the one side where I look at it, and the sun/brighter light is in the background causing my pupils to contract, so everything in the boat on that side looks darker.

I am having a little trouble on the broader deck area getting the paint completely even. I can't decide whether on the next coat to try to work faster to maintain a wet edge, or drag my butt back to HD for a 6" roller & pan. Really don't want to do that. Was already there once today.

I have enough mixed paint left to try a third coat this afternoon before the 8 hours working time are up, so may try to do that. Then if I still need one more coat, I have enough to mix up one more batch.
