Good luck Bighoss, I was amazed how easy it was. After a few minutes, you get the feel of it and can tell what the paint is doing and when it's time to switch to your dry roller. Don't be afraid to really spread the paint thin. Maybe that's why it's so expensive (relatively) because it has so much pigment in it. Also, If you haven't yet, go to Youtube and search Easypoxy, there are several good videos (better than the JD ones) about rolling it on. Gives you an idea on the technique.

Looking good LL, glad the weather is cooperating. The gloss is only going to get better with another coat or two.:)

I have had similar incidents recently with birds and bugs.

Not sure how the laws of physics allow bird crap to land the way it does. Puzzling.

The acme product is hilarious, I was thinking the same thing:D

Yep and in two more you can lightly wet sand her with a scotchbrite pad, dry her off, tack cloth her down with a cloth soaked in REGULAR mineral spirits and wrung out, let her dry and, lay down coat #2. That Hardener is AMAZING stuff

I think it's the same principle as when you drop the cap to your thinner in the middle of your shed floor and it bounces to the most remote, inaccessible, hard to see protected corner that there is!

For what it's worth, I tweaked the camera settings and this is a more accurate representation of the burgundy color (on my monitor, anyway). I like it but expected it to be darker. It's more like a blood red than a fire red. But it definitely ain't burgundy as I remember burgundy!

Oops, I fell down on the job. I had some other things to take care of but will be out at it again in the morning! That will give it a little more drying time anyway.

Well you ARE forgiven. It will give me somethun to look forward to. I did NOT get to do anything on mine today. Grandpa business got in the way as did the weather. Hopefully tomorrow evening.

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

The second coat is on and I was able to cut down my painting time to 2 hours.

w-coat2-DSC_4214.jpg

I made an amateur's mistake. I mixed my paint today in yesterdays container. That was OK until I went to refill my roller tray, and yesterday's skin had started to dissolve and globs of it poured out with the paint into the tray. Dumb mistake, I knew better but took a chance. Luckily I was able to pick out the globs with no consequences to the painting, but wasted some time. Taking a shortcut so I could make the job longer.:facepalm:

Another thing I gotta do is turn the boat around or somehow get some better light on the shed side. It was a lot harder to see what I was doing now that I was painting red on red, instead of on white. No electricity in the shed.

Here's a tip some of you have probably already figured out, but I found that keeping my dry roller as dry as possible helped the second roll a lot. Instead of switching rollers, I just laid out a newspaper on the shed floor (thanks, Harbor Freight!) and after every 1 or 2 sections, rolled the excess paint off onto dry pages.

I think it will be finished after one more coat, then I'll let it cure really well, flip it, put it on the trailer and paint the topside. Feels good to start having this painting step accomplished!

Wood, as much as you're telling me that I can recoat later in the day, Pettit's warning about more than one coat a day scares me. The weather looks good tomorrow too, so I think I'll wait. All I have to do is call and postpone a doctor's appt. I have scheduled. I do have my priorities!!!!:p

Thanks, I really like it. I wanted red but didn't like the fire reds I was seeing. This is a deeper, darker red, although not the even darker "burgundy" I was expecting.

I understand your concern but... They are NOT taking into account the Hardener you added. It not only enhances the Hardening properties, but also the glossiness AND speeds up the curing process by 40%. You ARE going to be safer by waiting longer but I do NOT think it is necessary. I truly believe you can put coat #3 on this evening with NO PROBLEMS. Your decision.;)

It is looking FANTASTIC!!!!!

Re: 1964 15' Starcraft Aluminum Runabout Project

Well, I was tempted, no, I should say "reasoned" :D into putting on the third coat this afternoon. The low light problem was solved by the afternoon sun being at a better angle and I hung an old white plastic shower curtain on the side of the shed to reflect some light back. It worked pretty well. My wife hasn't seen it and I don't think the neighbors noticed either.

For some reason, this time the sheen looks a little more splotchy to me than it did after the second coat. I don't know if it will look OK when it's completely dry or if I screwed something up. I think I did add a little extra thinner, maybe les than an ounce, than was called for. Maybe I've just been seeing too much of it today.:)
